Do you go out with crunchy hair?

kaykrekaykre Posts: 314Registered Users
I know crunch is often a good thing while hair is drying because it holds the curls' shape, prevents frizz etc and I know you're supposed to wait to until your hair is 100% dry to SOTC.

My hair takes 5-6 hours to air dry completely (2-3 hours if I diffuse the heavy water out) and most days I need to get on with my day and am not home the hours it takes my hair to dry.

Does anyone else have this issue? Do you go out with crunchy hair and SOTC when it's totally dry? Or do you SOTC at home even if its still damp?

Diffusing helps slightly but my hair is still somewhat wet 3 hours after.:(

No, my hair looks horrible that way. If I'm crunched for time I diffuse. This is also one of the reason I've been washing at night and pineapple my hair crunchy.

I go to work with my hair wet and it dries and gets crunchy during the morning. I usually go for a walk outside around 11:30am and by the time I get back it's typically dry enough to SOTC.

Not if I can help it! I diffuse most days. It takes 2-3 to air dry.

I diffuse for 10 minutes, and then it's completely dry about 45 minutes later.

Are you sure you're high porosity? That sounds like a long time to dry if so, although I know you have dense hair too.

If I air dry I quite often leave the house with soaking wet hair, that is generally only to run errands or visit my parents.

If I diffuse that is for a social occasion so I leave the house with maximum one more hour drying time, and it doesn't look terrible - I use a lot of conditioner so don't get a ton of crunch, it's more Medusa-noodle-head than super fine rock hard strings. I try to diffuse to one hour drying time, if I can I stay home for some or all of that hour, but I don't always time either aspect right!

Maybe diffuse for longer? You didn't ought to have too much problem getting dry hair in a dry climate, especially if you clip the roots so some of the underlayers get more exposure. Mini claw clips means you can go out with your roots still clipped. Larger roller jaw clamps can lift much larger sections but you likely would not want to be seen in public!

I wash my hair at night if at all possible, right after dinner. I diffuse for a while then let air dry until I go to bed, and I put it in a crunchy pineapple and big satin cap for bed then SOTC in the morning. I get the best results with this method.

If I absolutely must wash my hair in the morning I diffuse to roughly 80% dry and leave my house with crunchy hair and let the heater run in my car on my drive to work for it to finish drying and SOTC when I get there. My Starbucks probably thinks I look a little scary those mornings but I don't really care too much.

Looks better or DOES look better than scrunched. Hoping will get to "looks good crunchy and better scrunched".

This. I don't stop at Starbucks, but I do occasionally hit the grocery store or gas station on the way to work, and those people have the pleasure of seeing me crunchy and clipped. Makes their morning, I'm sure. :-)

I do! I don't like to use so much product that I get super crunchy unless I'm washing the night before. So I'll leave the house looking like a wet dog often the morning or afternoon of washing my hair if I need to run to the grocery store or even if I just want my hair to dry faster in the sun. I usually just wear some sunglasses in the hopes nobody recognizes the wet dog is moi.

One night last summer, I went out after washing my hair but I didn't diffuse like I do now (the "Meza" Method) and I got asked if I had just went swimming. I was so embarrassed. Since then, I refuse to go out with crunchy hair. I suffer from anxiety and I care way too much about what people think, lol.

If I don't co-wash the night before or if I decide day two hair is too meh for my taste, I will end up totally starting over in the morning. I don't have time to diffuse, so I'm cranking the heat up in my car on the ten minute commute. Fortunately, I get to work so early that there aren't too many people to witness the wet dog look. I think they've all gotten used to the crunchy look, cause I'll leave it like that through mid-morning. I've had a few people ask about it, "What's up with your hair? It looks different this morning," and I just tell them I washed it that morning and didn't have time to dry it.

Ooh, I have gotten a few weird looks from the gate guards (I work at an Air Force Base) when I have claw clips on the top of my head for root lift. I take those out before I leave my car, lol

@AKgirl: I wish mine wash long enough to pineapple.. It's shoulder length and anytime I've tried it did not go well :(

@chloe92us and CurlyGrey3: I'm pretty sure I am... My hair is damaged and bleached (highlights), the strands are fine, and it LOVES protein so I just assumed high porosity. Idk if the really long dry time has to do with density or what...the outer layers that are exposed to air will dry in 2-3 hours... When I say 5-6 I mean 100% dry..that's how long it takes the inner parts to dry fully. And I'm basically experimenting with a very simple CG routine since I'm just starting... Vo5 kiwi lime to cowash, deva low poo when needed, experimenting with with some natures gate conditioners, and various gels (KCCC, la looks, and 2 deva ones).

@firefox7275: what kind of clips do you mean? I have the deva ones but I don't think they are claw ones.

Yeah I wash and go daily with conditioner or a moisturizing leave in (no gel), and it gets crunchy as it dries, but i like the slight crunchy hold feel.

So far I have been conditioner only styling, so there is no crunch, but I have fairly dense low porosity hair so it takes a good deal of time to fully dry. During the first hour I am usually plopping so I don't leave the house. After that it takes another 2-3 hours to get to a point where it's not only dry enough to move around without causing frizz or curls to break up because the length of my hair makes it delicate in that way, but also to get to a point where I dont look ridiculous. My hair gains a good deal of volume during the drying process, and while wet you can see my scalp all over. I also either have the medusa look, or it gets even worse as the top layers dry and get fluffy, but other layers/clumps take longer. Needless to say I try not to leave my house with wet hair which can be tricky. I don't care that much what people think, but I guess I just have a standard for myself on how I want to look when I am out and about. Drive-throughs are another story though lol. They may get wet hair AND Pj's!
    My Hair:
    2c
    Fine, low porosity, med/high density
BSL - going for mid back to waist

    HG: currently
just washing with a low poo that contains protein (Alba Naturals Coconut) and using Suave Naturals Coconut as both a RO and LI. No stylers right now, but this gives me pretty good curl, definition, low-ish frizz, and it feels and looks good. Also an occasional PT (liking the Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula which has cones) seems to be key for me.

I wash around 7:30 and can't scrunch before noon due to my density and air conditioned office, and that's with going out in the warm weather for a half hour. I guess I just have lower standards (lol). I wish it looked better sooner, but I don't like any of my other alternatives.

Went to dinner with damp hair with majorly crunchy hair (but left the clips in the car) with my boyfriend and his daughter. I'm fortunate that my boyfriend thinks I look good no matter how bad it may be. He was exposed to some real hit mess days when I was per-CG; he indulges my PJ tendencies and listens patiently to me when I go on about the CG method and go on about my hair.

Chupie and Firefox... do you put the clips facing down (with the "mouth" facing toward your scalp) or on their side (with the "mouth" facing sideways).

I bought some mini-octopus clips today but I'm not sure it was the right choice.....

To answer OP's question... my hair looks :pukeright: disgusting while wet/damp. Flat, tends to frizz while damp. I can't move my head for fear of THE FRIZZ. Haven't used any gels though besides FSG, this is mostly going by leave-ins.

I've been stubbornly non-heat for about 7 years now and since I'm a student and don't have much time for morning shenanigans I've been just dealing with my wet hair looking horrible for 7 hours. Since I've been doing CG stuff purposefully, the drying time has easily doubled.

I think if your hair is on the fine and thin side it especially looks bad before SOTC.

I try not to go out with crunchy hair. I don't like the look. I found that applying the SM smoothie b4 my gel, helps my hair not look so crunchy, but it also takes away some of the curl definition. but I will SOTC when it is still damp.
