alternative for flax seed gel

Because I am now using BS and water for shampoo and ACV and water for conditioner, I wanted to use an all natural styler as well. I had heard many good things about flax seed gel so I tried it. I really want to like it because it is so healthy, but it just does not look very nice in my hair. I think it would look better with a styling cream. I would like to make it myself with simple ingredients... any suggestions??;)

okra gel seems to be very popular. What specifically did you not like in the FSG? This will help us narrow down the problem. You can also add things to FSG like honey, agave nectar, epsom salt, olive oil, aloe... but it depends on what you're going for and what your hair needs.

Baking soda is highly alkaline and so damaging to both skin and hair, vinegar will help the cuticle lay flat but it is not a conditioner and can be drying used regularly. Natural is not always better.

Alternatives to flaxseed gel include okra gel or aloe vera gel, you could add oil to any of them or just use a leave in conditioner under your flaxseed gel. You should use a preservative unless you are making very small batches every couple of days, so you won't be totally 'chemical free'.

    My FSG recipe is:
    1/4 cup flax seeds
    2 cups water
    1 table spoon olive oil
    1 table spoon aloe gel
    1 tea spoon agave nectar
20 drops tea tree essential oil.....
I have altered it once to reduce the hold factor but it is still too stiff and makes my hair look darker in color, oily, and very curly but it does'nt give me any volume. What should I add more or less of? Should I just try plain FSG?

FSG makes my hair a bit stiff too. You might want to try experimenting with marshmallow root.

If you don't need additional hold, you could eliminate the agave or aloe gel. And definitely put less oil in. Maybe 1/2 teaspoon.

Hmmm good suggestion. I have never heard of marshmallow root though. Can it be bought at a regular grocery store?

Seems like a lot of tea tree! The recipe I use was only 6 drops of lavender and I added 6 of tea tree as well. Maybe cut back on that? Less agave might help with the stiffness. I put too much in my last batch of okra gel and it makes my hair feel coated.

You could try a lighter oil too. Maybe grapeseed?

Here's my FSG recipe, if it helps with proportions:

I soak 1/4 c flax seed in 1 c aloe vera juice (or water.) Steep 2 T each of marshmallow & burdock roots in 2 c boiling water. The next day, I strain the herbs and add it all to 4 c water--cook and strain.

For every cup of FSG, I add:

    1 oz EW SAJ
    1/2 t citric acid
    1/4 t Vit E
    1/2 t honeyquat
    1/4 t Sucragel AOF
    1/4 t Potassium Sorbate
    1/4 magnesium chloride flakes
    1/8 t EO
thickener based on what it needs. I use Hydroethylcellulose, xanthum gum or another one that I'd have to look up.

The Sucragel AOF has sucrose, glycerin and sweet almond oil in it. The T of oil is WAY too much.
3a (Corkicelli), highlighted, fine, low porosity

I agree with everyone. That is WAAYY too much oil and agave nectar. I would not use more than a 1/2 tsp of agave nectar per 8oz yield of product and no more than 1/2 tsp total of oil. FSG has great hold on its own, so adding agave nectar is really not required. Kathymack has great starting recipe. I started with hers then tweaked it to make my own. If you find FSG is still not your thing, then give okra gel a try. You use the same ingredients and proportions, and its alot easier. Only thing is that you MUST use a thickening agent like guar gum or xanthum gum(find these in the baking isle) or you wont get the same results.

For those who use tea tree oil, what does it do for hair? I know it can be good for the scalp, particularly if you have skin conditions like SD but for the hair shaft?

I agree with the others that it's probably too much anyway, and you don't need as much (or possibly any) agave.

If you want to be very diligent about it you can make plain FSG, try it out and see how you like it. Then add ingredients one by one in subsequent batches to really feel out what each ingredient is doing. I would definitely recommend trying out plain first.

You may want to consider aloe as well. It gives me a flash-drying effect which I kind of detest.

I am not really sure what tea tree does. My understanding is that EO has a slight preserving effect and I like the smell. Since I use ALOT of FSG it does get on my scalp and helps with slight itch if I have any. Lately that's almost none.

What does the Tea Tree oil do in FSG?

The tea tree oil adds scent, repels bugs, is antifungal (which helps preserve it longer), slightly moisturizing, and stimulates the scalp. I like to do a scalp massage once a week with 2 teaspoons evoo and 4 drops of tea tree essential oil. It brings more blood circultion to the scalp which stimulates hair growth, I also do not like the smell of plain FSG so I aded the tea tree, it just so happened that it had those benefits.
