I'm very low porosity, but somewhat more on the side of medium than coarse (somewhere in between), so I don't know if my reply will be helpful to you, but anyway, here goes! :)

I've found that the trick to get ANY product to work well with my hair is to diffuse, even if just for a minute or two. It seems to help the product "melt" into my low-po hair better.

Having said that, the products that seem to work best for me are the jellies, in general. So, KCCC, SS Curl Enhancing Jelly, SM Souffle (but NOT the smoothie; I have yet to find a low-po person who that works for), and Uncle Funky's Magic, to name some of my most frequently used products. I have a feeling that jellies are the best products for us low-po folks as I have seen them featured in other low-po's signatures (KathyMack, e.g.).

Creams of any kind seem to not work for me. They sit on the hair and just make it weighed down. I thought the same would be true of oils, but my hair actually loves coconut oil; sometimes I put a huge amount (1/3 cup) on and wrap it in a foil cap, then a turban, and sleep overnight. The next day, I co-wash it out, and my hair looks great! I haven't tried other oils.

Finally, I really like the SM Moisture Retention Shampoo for CG-friendly cleansing, and KC Come Clean when I need to really scrub something out (like my failed attempts at polyquats). My favorite condish is Giovanni Direct Leave-In.

I haven't yet changed my routine from winter, and I'm not really sure what I would change, except to be careful with glycerin, as I know it can make the hair take on too much of the ambient air moisture when it is humid.

What are you using right now, if I may ask?

I have low porosity hair and love the smoothie. I do have to be careful not to use too much or it makes my hair feel coated. I love that it doesn't feel sticky. And, my hair needs "curl enhancing" which the smoothie definitely provides.

SSCEJ = Spiral Solutions Curl Enhancing Jelly. What products are working for you right now, Myrna? I'm always looking for new suggestions! [need a product junkie emoticon]

And @pianogirl: I'm glad to be proven wrong about the Smoothie! I know a lot of folks like it, and it's good to know that it works for some of us low-po gals as well! :)

What is the difference between no poo and low poo?

Also what does KCCC stand for? Sorry I googled it and came up with Korea Campus Crusade for Christ and Kansas City Country Club and I'm sure its not that.

Low poos are sulphate free cleansers (deva low poo, Shea moisture shampoos, etc). They have more cleansing ingredients than a no poo, and generally have some suds and have less conditioning properties.

No poos are cleansing conditioners (deva no poo, curl junkie daily fix, loreal evercurl cleansing conditioner). These have mild cleansers as well, but they cleanse AND condition.

Co washing is simply using any conditioner to wash; the action of rubbing/friction is what removes dirt & oils.

KCCC stands for kinky curly curling custard.

Ah , hello, Piano Girl, my hair twin. Well, lets see: I have been using the SM moisture retention and the Coconut hibiscus, as well as Yes to Cukes for low poos. I dont wash with conditioner and never will, and I hate Deva's no poo. Yuck. AND I wash every day. For conditioners, I have been using TSN; Yes to Cukes; Occasionally I use Yes to Tomatoes; AND I have been using Suave's Water Lily and Aloe. I use a dab of AVG after my conditioner because it helps with curl formation, but am using less than I was using in the winter. Styling: CK and Deva Foam. Its not perfect but most days it works. I am considering the Kiss My Face Upper Management, as it has no protein or glycerin, but Whole foods was out of it. I also have looked at both the Smoothie and the Souffle dozens of times and cannot figure our which one, if either, would work for me. One has glycerin. I need hold and curl formation.

Myrna, I think the Smoothie definitely helps with curl formation. After some stuff I read on here I thought I might try the Souffle but then saw it had Aloe which I decided my hair doesn't like. Then later, I realized the smoothie has aloe also!!! So, I don't know if it is far enough down on the list that it doesn't have as bad effects or what. I love the way Giovanni Direct Leave In and Kinky Curly Curling Custard make my hair look but they make it feel like it has glue in it. I decided it was the aloe. If you try the Smoothie I would start out light. I still haven't really been able to narrow down if Glycerin has negative effects on my hair but so far the Smoothie seems to make my hair look better than anything else and I think it has glycerin!

And.....to answer your initial question. Right now I am using Yes to Carrots shampoo and conditioner and the smoothie. I have had to change my products with the seasons ever since I gave into my curls about 5 years ago. When I find something I really love I always think it might work year round but so far it has never happened. I need a lot more moisture in the winter because my hair needs all the curl enhancing help it can get. It also doesn't look as nice and smooth in the winter without the right products. The products I like for winter usually weigh my hair down in the summer, make it flat and hard to dry. It is extremely humid here in summer.

I am using the same products, but: I use lighter conditioners, and less of them; I still use aloe vera gel after conditioning, but less of it. I do not use a separate leave in, ever. And, despite the high praise for it, I HATED the Giovanni leave in. Conversely, I love the Smooth as Silk.
