What’s Your Hair Treatment Routine?

My name is Katrina. I have been natural for about 2 years and I have yet to get a solid moisturizing routine down. When my hair gets dry it feels tough, but it is usually soft while it is wet. I don't really have a specific curl pattern, so I am always twisting my hair to get some waves. So far I have tried Carol's Daughter and Jane Carter products. I try to stay away from products with too much chemicals. I have also tried putting coconut oil, olive oil, and honey in my hair. Nothing I use has lasting affects. My hair looks good for like 2 or 3 days after I wash it. After that all the moisture just leaves my hair, and I don't want to constantly wet my hair. Once my hair gets dry not much can penetrate the hair shaft, not even oils. I was wondering, what are some of your hair routines that seem to keep your hair moisturized?

Hi there....I see you listed oils but do you use a leave in conditoner? Giovanni direct and NTM silk touch are wonderful. :)

I've tried the Jane Carter Solution leave in conditioner, but after 2 or 3 days...My hair is dried up again. I have not tried Giovanni direct nor NTM silk touch. I will look into that. Thanks a lot for the response!

For very dry hair, a little avovado butter or hair milk over an oil (olive or jojoba) should help a lot. And if you don't have time to whip up your own concoctions the following brands may help (they're very nice and affordable enough to try all of them to see which one works best):

    1. Carol's Daughter Hair Milk
    2. Sta SOf Fro Rub On Conditioner
    3. Rasta Jamaican Cactus & Lime Leave-In Moisturizing
    Conditioner-Original Formula

If your hair feels very brittle-ly, apply them to slighly damp or wet hair for better absoption.

I usally add honey or olive oil to my conditioner for a great DT!

you can find/research/buy quality oils and butters with a keyword search at:

    Co-Wash: Aubrey O. HoneySuckleRose Cond.
    Poo: 1-2x ~monthly~ w/AO 'poo+Baking Soda
DT: Honey + any Aubrey Condish
    Leave-Ins: Sheamoisture / RJML Cactus / KBBmilk!

You mentioned styling products and oils, but what about deep treatments/conditioners? They really work for me. I use mostly pre-poo treatments on dry hair but lots of curlies do after poo or co-wash treatments. And use a little heat

Anita Grant Rhassoul conditioner (mixed with coconut milk)
Ojon Restorative Hair treatment (my favorite overnight treatment)
    Homemade -- coconut milk/conditioner/honey/castor oil/coconut oil
Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment is good, and I've heard good things about [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/Curl-Junkie-Hibiscus--Banana-Deep-Fix-Moisturizing-Conditioner-p-478.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=curl-junkie-hibiscus-banana-deep-fix-moisturizing-conditioner]Curl Junkie Hibiscus & Banana deep fix[/buylink].

And I agree on the leave-in. Robert Craig makes a great conditioner that I also use as a leave. Curl Junkie makes several leave-ins; Giovanni Direct leave-in. Or you can use your regular favorite conditioner as a leave -in

ETA - wetting your hair every few days is a great moisturizer, especially if you co-wash rather than shampoo. Spend some time letting the water run through your hair and massaging your scalp before you co-wash.

Yes try a deep condish. It may do the trick and sleep with a satin cap to keep in mositure. It really works, that is for me.
I used the Jane Carter solution and that is great but light, ( That is for me ) I love her products but use them for summer weather as they are not as thick for cold weather, even though I used the Nourish and Shine mixed with my coco curl cream from curl junkie. I hope you get there :-) Trust me I can feel ya !!!

i had the same problem, Trina 08. I finally found a solution. I just purchased the [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]curls milkshake[/buylink] after reading so many raves about it. It really moisturizes your hair. Usually after my hair dries, it shrinks up and has this brillo pad look and sometimes a brillo pad feel. Only when i used gel did it maintain the curls I had when wet. [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/CURLS-Curls-Milkshake-p-884.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=Curls-Curls-Milkshake]Curls milkshake[/buylink] keeps your hair soft and really moisturized. It is one of my best purchases yet and it's worth it. You get a lot. I also purchased the whipped cream but haven't mastered how much to use yet.
