are the Shea Moisture poo's more cleansing then using vo5 conditioner to cowash with?

IAgalIAgal Posts: 139Registered Users
I'm thinking of trying the Shea Moisture poo that has shea butter and Kelp not the coconut one(would cause me breakouts) BUT if its not any more "cleansing" than using straight vo5 conditioner then i'm not going to spend the $$.

I was also thinking of trying the jessicurl cream cleanser, where would this fit in? would it be more cleansing then the two above?

i'm STILL a little confused about this stuff......
the vo5 conditioner i was trying/using..it seemed like i really need to scrub my scalp for a long time to get it clean and i was losing a ton of hair from doing that so i want to find something that won't dry my hair out but will clean my scalp without a lot of scrubbing..if there IS such a thing......

My hair feels cleaner with the SM moisture retention shampoo

I haven't tried the SM Retention shampoo, but I love the Coconut & Hibiscus one. The shampoos will be more cleansing than a co-wash so if you wash with them daily it's not really "CG" per se (but do whatever works best for your hair! Just watch for dryness if you start using shampoo more routinely). I use the coconut Shea Moisture shampoo in the fall/winter because it's really moisturizing and I find it too heavy in warmer weather.

My replacement for warm weather is the Jessicurl Cleansing Conditioner. It's an HG for me! It's pretty much the consistency of a watered down conditioner but with a little bit of extra cleansing punch thanks to the coco betaine (which will remove all buildup, even if you use silicones). It would be considered sort of a cross between a co-wash and a low-poo (like Curl Junkie Daily Fix is). It lathers like a low-poo but it's less cleansing than a low-poo and gentle enough to use more often, like a co-wash conditioner.

My personal routine is to only wash my hair every 2 or 3 days. I usually do use the Jessicurl and a lighter conditioner. Once a week I'll use a true low-poo (using up my Devacurl Low Poo) when I do my protein treatment. Co-washing doesn't work for my hair so the Jessicurl has been a great compromise. I bought the 32oz size! I think the frequent cleansing technically makes me "modified CG", but it keeps my scalp from itching and makes my curls happy so I'm sticking with it!

Were you using enough product and enough water? Some predilute their CO-wash conditioner, others apply then massage then leave to soak and emulsify for a few minutes before rinsing with a little more massage. I use Inecto and don't skimp because it's cheap, I would not say I need to scrub nor for a long time and even get a soft 'lather' up. I wash upside down so sort of comb my fingers along the scalp alternately towards the crown instead of risking tangling the roots by rubbing in little circles.

By all means change your product, but do understand that for many low-poo or no-poo products there is a different technique to commercial shampooing because there are no powerful/ harsh surfactants. That is likely partly because most of us used far too much sulphate shampoo before we went CG instead of relying on good washing technique.

You might look for a product that is quite basic and not expect it to cleanse effectively AND moisturise effectively AND be super gentle, have your subsequent conditioners do the hydrating. If you choose something at pH 4.5 to 5.5 that would be the most gentle on both skin and hair. Also consider avoiding ingredients that build up or are difficult to remove like shea butter.

    curvesncurls,

I've seen the jessicurl cleansing cream but hadn't tried it yet. I'm a little concerned about the oil(avocado i'm thinking? going by memory here)that's in it.with my low porosity hair, oil seems to just sit on my hair and make it look greasy. you don't have any issues with this? where is the cheapest place you can get this,do u know?
    thanks!

    firefox,
I believe I was using enough conditioner but maybe not enough water. it seems when I just use conditioner only to wash my hair I get a white buildup on my scalp so I tend to try to scrub for longer periods...gently but longer.

    Thanks for the tips!

curvesncurls, meant to ask...what is the "lighter" conditioner you use after the jessicurl?

If you have problems with build up, forget using a moisturising product or one with a ton of additives so you don't get residues. Just go for something lightweight and basic with few ingredients: you should massage the scalp as you rinse not just when you apply to shift any residues. I definitely wouldn't go for a shea butter product nor one with fragrances or loads of plant extracts like Devacurl if you have a possible scalp issue.

The Jessicurl cleansing cream doesn't look to be full of junk, or scale up to a low-poo like the Komaza Care, the company are into scalp care and their Moja shampoo is pH 4.5.

There is avocado oil in it, but I don't have problems with my hair looking greasy. I do find that if I low-poo with my DevaCurl, I can go without a wash for about 3 days before my hair starts to look stringy/greasy. With the Jessicurl I can only go for 2 before I need to wash again. I have low porosity hair too, but I don't have problems with this product. I know you can order the regular size products from curlmart.com but you can also go onto the Jessicurl website and order a 0.5oz or 2oz size if you want to try it. But for the best deal, I would suggest posting on the swap board here that you are in search of this product (if you want to specify that you are looking for a sample, you could, but I actually got my 32oz bottle for $35 which was good enough of a deal for me to purchase without ever having tried the product before - it will depend on your finances). If you have anything you tried and didn't like you could post it for swap, or you could just post that you are looking to purchase. Hope that helps!

I'm in trials right now for one that meets my needs but I'm experimenting with Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus and Curl Junkie Smoothing Conditioner. They're both too heavy I think so I've been reverting to my fallback - VO5. I really need to find something that's in the middle but haven't had luck yet.

I got the unscented version, which surprisingly smells ok! I found it on the swap board, so I lucked out on the price. But it sounds like you might be able to get a good deal with some of these codes ~ which I am now storing on my desktop for future reference - hopefully without dh finding them!! :hiding:

I haven't tried the gentle cleansing shampoo, but it looks like a lot of the ingredients are the same as the cleansing cream so I would imagine it's pretty gentle and moisturizing. I hope the Cleansing Cream works for you!!

I have the Shea moisture curl enhancing shampoo but haven't used it yet. I like the stylers from that line. They help me out on high humidity days like today.
