What counts as a 'co-wash

Would putting conditioner on your hair while you shower count as a 'co-wash'? If not, how do you do a cowash? I've been fully natural for 4 days (bc'd last Thursday) & the front part of my head is COMPLETELY dry. Now that I think about it, it's itchy there too. I need to get that part hydrated & fast. It won't curl there & is rather frizzy. HELP!!!!

Conditioner only washing is washing with conditioner, using a specific type of conditioner that is rich in cationic surfactants in a similar manner to shampoo. You don't just leave shampoo to sit in your hair, you apply it to the scalp, massage with it and rinse super thoroughly. CO-washing is not designed to hydrate hair, it's designed to cleanse without stripping.

Your richer conditioners hydrates hair, the wash out leave in and deep treatments. The ingredients in these need to consider your hair properties and dew points. Generally a combination of humectants, fatty alcohols and oils are what holds water in and around the hair.

There are many really useful threads linked to from in the stickies on the newbies and general haircare boards, good articles on the main NC site and videos on YouTube, also the Curly Girl book itself. It's worth spending some time exploring the resources - all the basics of the CG method and what different ingredients do are covered. This is the sticky on this board

Would a conditioner have the same cleansers as a sulfate free shampoo?

A regular conditioner would not have the same cleansers as a sulfate-free shampoo. The cleansing properties of conditioners are purely incidental, since companies manufacture them for the purpose of conditioning, not cleansing. However, there are cleansing conditioners available that have cleansing agents added intentionally- some of these cleansers can be found in sulfate-free shampoos. Cleansing conditioners are sort of a hybrid between using a regular conditioner and using a sulfate-free shampoo.

No: I highly recommend you check out some of the articles/ threads/ links I suggested, the different types of surfactants (cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, nonionic) are covered in detail by proper scientists but in plain English.
