FSG ingredient thread

I'm definitely liking homemade FSG (I even received a compliment about how curly my hair looks today!), so I want to experiment a bit with adding new ingredients to my current recipe. I know there are many recipe threads, but I figured it would be a good idea to have a "central" thread where we don't post our recipes, but where we collect optional ingredients along with their purposes. This way, it's easier to determine what we need to optimise our individual recipes.

How about I put them in this first post and update this every time someone adds a new ingredient? Perhaps I could even categorise the ingredients on what they do for your hair (provide hold, moisture, etc).

The list:
- Agave nectar: hold, shine
- Aloe vera gel: moisture
- Argan oil: sealer, shine
- Citric acid: used to reduce pH
- EcoMulse: emulsifier
- Epsom salt: curl enhancer
- Gelatine: protein
- Glycerin: humectant
- Grapeseed oil: sealer, moisturiser when emulsified
- Honey: hold
- Honeyquat: humectant
- Marshmellow root: slip, thickener
- Olive oil: shine
- Pottasium sorbate: preservative
- Xanthan gum: thickener
F - LP - HD - NE
Fine, low porosity, high density, normal elasticity
Hairtype 2c

Low poo: Petal Fresh Organics Rosemary & Mint Volumizing Shampoo
Protein: Colorful Neutral Protein Filler
Detangler/RO: KCKT (winter) or Curl Junkie Beauticurls Argan & Olive Oil (summer)
Styling: KCCC

Sorry it's not really about ingredients but I have a quick question: how do you like the hold of FSG? Is it a strong, medium or light hold? Do you usually use strong, medium or light holds? What kind of hold works best for your hair? You have fine hair, right? I have fine hair too and strong hold gels weigh my hair down. So I was wondering about FSG, whether it's strong or med or light.

Oh no problem! I'm happy to answer your questions.

If I compare FSG to BRHG (not just strong hold, but rock hard hold, literally) and CJ Curl Queen (light hold, curls will go limp at the end of the day), I'd say FSG has medium hold. I thought I wanted strong hold products, but my hair looks much more natural with medium hold, so for the moment, medium hold seems to work best for me. I have fine hair, yes, and FSG definitely doesn't weigh it down. Neither did BRHG, btw, but it dried my ends and I'm much more into natural products anyway.

The thing with FSG is that you can modify the basic recipe as much as you want and create a gel that works best for you. The basic recipe consists of just water and flaxseeds. Most people add oils (I haven't done that yet - figured I'd try it first before buying any oils), and there are plenty of other things you can use. I did add some honey because I read that it provides hold. Thus far I like it. My curls are much more defined and they look best in the evening, something I couldn't achieve with CJ CQ. I get some nice clumps (but not too much, still looks really natural) and my hair starts to spiral. I have to admit that I'm a FSG newbie (hence the idea to create an ingredient topic) but I'm really excited about the results so far. I don't use anything under or over it, just FSG. I even had great hair on my washing day, whereas it usually looks a bit fuzzy and undefined.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    @Lauraimes,

Thanks a lot for answering my questions :), it's really helpful. I kinda want to try it out now. One more question, you live in Holland right? So do I. Where did you buy flaxseed?

    You're welcome, Aqua_Lily!

Yes, I live in the Netherlands. I simply got them at the Plus (supermarket) and found them in the biological foods department. I guess you can find it in most supermarkets, biological supermarkets, and perhaps even De Tuinen.

In case you're wondering, I followed the instructions of this video: Do It Yourself: Homemade Natural Hair Gel with Flaxseeds - YouTube

I used 1/4 cup of flaxseeds (= 4 tbsp) to 2 cups of water (= 32 tbsp). My additional ingredient was 1/2 tsp of honey.

I have made it only once, so I can't really compare...
But I added about 2 Tbs aloe gel (to 2c). I guess it adds moisture?

I've used a bit of Epsom salt dissolved in water (about 1/2 tsp of the solution), I read that it's a curl enhancer...last time I added also 1/2 tsp of olive oil, for moisture?
I like these two, along with honey in the basic recipe :D

I tried something different with my FSG and felt the need to share :)

Recipe: 8 cups water with 1/2 cup seeds
    4 teaspoons Epsom Salts
I boiled for about 7-8 minutes after it started to foam
I had about 5 cups after straining
    Additives:
    about a teaspoon honey
    tsp Avacado oil
    tsp jojoba oil
    tsp Vit E oil
15 drop each Grapefruit EO and Sweet Orange EO
    2 packets Knox Gelatin

This is the first time I tried more than 1/2 packet of the gelatin and I have to say I am pleased. It came out much thicker than usual, more like the consistence of jello...maybe a little thinner. East to apply and my hair seems to LOVE all the protein! Next time....Marshmallow Root :)
