Keratin Treatment - DONT DO IT!

So I haven't posted in a very long while but I felt compelled to share my experience with a Coppola Keratin Treatment. First a little background: I had my last relaxer in March 2009 and did my BC in November. I confess, it was hard. My hair was thick and had multiple textures. Mostly I was a 4a though the crown of my head was mostly 4b/c and the back/nape was mostly 3c. My go-to style, after growing out my twa, was a two strand twist. Despite all of the textures in my hair the one defining thing was the "swell" of my twists. They were awesome.

By March 2011, I was growing tired of twists and also felt that my hair was growing up and out rather than down. My then hairdresser convinced me that a Keratin Treatment was the way to go. That it would keep my curls but have my hair grow down instead of up. She convinced me that I would finally have the wash-n-go hair I always wanted. Most importantly, she assured me that it was not permanent and that if I didn't like it, it would wash out in a couple of months. So I took the plunge and let her do a Coppola Keratin Treatment.

At first (for maybe 3-4 weeks) I thought it was my dream come true. My hair hung down and looked amazing. My curls were definitely looser but still curly. But as time wore on, the crown and the nape of my hair started to revert back to its normal state but the front of my hair kept getting straighter and straighter. By then, I missed my curls and decided that I wanted to go back to natural.

Well folks, its been over two years. Guess what, the front of my hair still won't curl. What's horrible is that there is a clear line of demarcation in my hair. The first 3-4 inches from my scalp are puffy and wavy/curly. The remaining 8-10 inches are a straight, hot mess. I have slowly started cutting off the straight ends because clearly this is never going away.

I am so disappointed. I wish I had left well enough alone. I know I could just do another BC but honestly that style didn't suit me and I'm not inclined to start all over again.

I write this to say, before you even think about a keratin treatment, remember that depending on your texture to begin with, you may be in for a much longer commitment than you intended. If you ever hope to wear your hair curly again, I say DON'T DO IT!

OMG SAME!!! I had mine done in Brooklyn 2.5 years ago. I was an idiot and was convinced by the hairdresser to get it done to make my curls healthier and "better looking." Ugh, biggest mistake of my life! I never got my curls the way they used to be, even now, years later. And my hair barely grows. Before, it would grow at a normal rate. Now, my hair grows, if I'm lucky, about an inch every 6-8 months. The Koppola crap is the worst decision I ever made.

I'm so sorry for both of you! I hope in time your hair gets back to a healthy pre-keratin state.
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....
Every day is a gift :flower:
