Castor oil-what exactly does it do?

I've been looking at Jamaican black castor oil, and I'm intrigued. I've heard that it's supposed to thicken your hair? Does it really, and if so how? I mean, does it make more hair grow in, grow faster, or does it thicken the individual strands? Also, would it stain highlighted, blonde hair? My hair LOVES oils so now this one has piqued my interest, especially hearing that it help with growth!

I don't know much about that specific type, but I do know about plain castor oil!

Castor oil itself leaves shine to the hair, and it also contains a certain ingredient that promotes hair growth. If used for a while, compared to people who don't use castor oil, they noticed a significant difference in the thickness of their hair. Hey, let's face it, all hair's love oil! It's what they naturally produce, is it not? :D

Sorry that I don't know fudge about black castor oil, but this might help. Also, if your interested in growing hair in general I recommend taking Hair vitamins, they sell them at drug stores. They contain nutrients for healthy hair growth!

    Hope I helped!

Thank you! So is regular castor oil lighter in color and less likely to stain? I've only heard of using Jamaican black castor oil for hair but I'm worried about it staining my hair if it really is dark. Shine and growth sounds absolutely perfect though, thanks again!

Thank you Firefox, those articles are great! So basically, since massaging is what's causing the growth, I'm probably just going to stick to using coconut oil. A few days ago I did a coconut oil treatment and scalp massage, and was fully expecting my hair to be slightly oilier. Instead, it's been 3 days and I haven't even had to wash my hair yet, whereas normally it's a daily thing. So I think I'm already sold on scalp massages, lol! Growth would just be icing on the cake.

You don't have to get the Jamaican black castor oil. Regular castor oil, the golden kind, works fine for most. And it runs you like $8-10 at the health food store. I used the NOW brand (actually cost me $7) and mix a tbsp of castor oil or more with my deep treats. I don't use it alone typically as it is so thick and gummy. (I can't attest to it making my hair any thicker, however, because I already have thick hair.) Just a note--you do need to cut castor oil with a thinner one to help it spread as it's not a true "oil". My mother has been using a mixture of 50/50 castor oil and coconut oil on the edges of her scalp to help them grow a bit fuller and it's really working. Also helpful is the advice from user aqua_lily. She says to take some castor oil and mix it with coconut, just dip your fingers into the mix so that they are slightly wet, then tap the scalp gently and give yourself a super gentle massage, letting the sparse coating of oil absorb into the scalp. (Not too much oil unless you want to wash your hair. Just use enough to make your fingertips shine.) So this method has certainly worked for her in terms of hair growth as she's already gone past waist length hair.
