Specific questions about UFDCM

chloe92uschloe92us Posts: 1,203Registered Users
I'm so curious about the UFDCM- almost purchased it this week. I like the fact that it's glycerin free. I've read most of the threads about it, but have some questions:

I'm curious about the texture; runny? Thick?

And the smell? I'm very picky and herbal type smells are a huge turn off for me (as in anything by Aubrey organics) So...please describe the scent!

Would you consider this a gel for hold, or more of an enhancer?

Thanks!

I got a sample of this from my hair twin and I liked it enough that it's on my wish list, but haven't actually purchased yet. I think all the way around, the best comparison is to SS CEJ. The scent isn't as strong and I believe was slightly lemon-y. Consistency was identical and I used it the same way- as a curl enhancer.

When UFD CM first came out, it was touted as a KCCC clone. It's been an HG for me since I first used it--not as thick as KCCC, but not runny, either. (KCCC is an on again/off again product for me.) I agree with the lemon smell. It's light, not pure lemon, more like lemon Pledge. It fades quickly.

Since starting to lurk on nc.com, my curl pattern has become stronger and really doesn't require much hold. It's a natural, jelly product--doesn't have all of the chemicals. Provides moisture, so curl enhancing.

I just used that one today! So shouldn't have to go smell it, as I did with the UFD CM. It's more "herby," but not bad. Dissipates quickly. When I first used it, I got the tightest curls--ever. But they felt odd. Now that I've learned more, I thought it might be some type of sugar. If you've used the SM Souffle, that feeling. She's changed the formula and that odd feeling is gone. It's better in higher dewpoints, the Stretch Gelee in lower dewpoints.

I made the mistake of giving the SM Souffle one more chance as a middle product. I added some Sucragel AOF and Sea Kelp Biofermant--to it (two of my favorite ingredients in FSG and okra gel.) I'm afraid my hair might get that feeling when it dries.

Don't know if that answers your question.

I really like UFD CM! It's not runny at all, but not thick like Ecostyler. A little thinner than KCCC.

It's not sweet smelling, a little herb-y but nothing like AO products. Those made me want to gag!

For me, I have very lazy, very little natural wave. It is a really good curl enhancer that has a little hold. Works best for me in low dews while KCCC is much better for me in high dews!

I love UFDCM! I like that it dried really fast and has decent ingredients and for the price, you get a nice amount. To the texture....I hate to be gross but idk why but I think of snot. Probably because it can stretch out as it pulls away from the pump.

Darn it, I received my Botanical Spirits purée today and I didn't realize it was a jelly/ pudding. I guess I was expecting it to be more liquidy like SS CEJ or okra gel (I really like the gooey stuff).

I hope this one is better for me than coil jam, which is the same consistency... Unless I'm not using coil jam correctly, it seems to give my hair almost a dull finish and flakes on me.

Any other enhances that are gooey?

I think I'll have to continue experimenting with jellies- they just seem hit or miss for me. I wish I loved the CK CJ because of all my products, I heart the smell the most.

I'll report back once I actually use it.

Had to go up and look at my new ones. I noticed it came in a jar with a pump, instead of a bottle with a pump. Still have most of that bottle, so didn't think to try it. The product is thicker then the prior bottles. Went to the website and there is nothing about a new formula, so I expect it to be the same, just thicker. I'll try to remember to compare the ingredients when I go upstairs, again.

Something you have to remember. A lot of these products are made in someone's kitchen and not manufactured. They are similar a lot of the time, but might be a little different. If you ordered another batch of Mudd from BB, it might not be identical to your first batch.

Since I know how much you love okra gel, I relate a similar experience. Was close to the Indian grocery, so picked up some fresh okra last weekend. Made a new batch of okra gel because I was down to my last 8 ounces. Last time, I used guar gum as a thickener--the hydroethylcellulose was lumpy the time before that. I decided to make a slurry out of the hydroethylcellulose, because my hair really likes it. (also used some gelatin) It was almost room temperature and really hadn't thickened enough. So, I made a slurry out of some guar gum and added 1/2 of what I used in my previous batch. Looked about right when I finished. All I can say is that this stuff is really thick. I was worried because I ended up with 10 cups! This stuff is GREAT. I used it yesterday (we're in the middle of a heat wave) and my hair looked really good. Looked at it before my shower this morning (after the health club) and it wasn't bad. I rarely, if ever, do second day hair. But thicker was even better with the okra gel! So, maybe it will be great with the Puree.

Kathy- my purée came in a tub so I have to scoop (another pet peeve!)....I thought it would be in a bottle.

I'm so glad you love the okra too- I used it yesterday with biotera gel on top and didnt like the result (first time using biotera, and so far not impressed). My only chance of 2nd day hair is after an okra day. I'm desperately trying to find other things I can rotate that are "like" it in consistency and results. So far, I haven't found anything as good. Hoping the UFDCM will be a contender.

I'm allergic to anything Biotera, so stay away from it.

I just checked my old puree and my new puree--same ingredients, in the same order. You used to be able to buy different "strengths." That option is no longer available. On the front of my old bottle, it says soft hold gel. On the new jar (mine does have a pump, I wonder if it will work?), it says medium hold gel. Maybe I'll write the owner and see if she has anything to say about it.

I bought the 8 oz and it's in a tub. I'm thinking you must have the 16 oz and it comes with a pump. Also, mine says "a soft hold moisturizing hair gel"...???

I wrote Redgine Armand from Botanical Spirits and received this answer:

    "Hi Kathy,
You may quote the explanation below

The newer one was formulated to work for all curl types. Yes with all the ingredients in the same order but with a slightly higher concentration for a medium hold. The final results will all depend on the amount used and curl type. As for the packaging; pump jars were based on the original packaging (to be discontinued). Newer packaging does not contain a pump. Which container/packaging a customer receive is totally by random. We hope that cleared up any confusions and thank you for your business."

Of course, I had to try the newer one in the jar with the pump. It's too thick to pump. I used the li--the Shea Soft Styling Creme. Took it a LONG time to dry and even long to absorb. My hair looks and feels good. Right now, the dewpoint is 64.

Thanks for posting that. I've had an interesting couple of hair days...on Thursday I used my trusty mudd topped with biotera (my 1st use). Ended up with greasy looking hair that felt weird. Had to do 2nd day hair yesterday due to a time constrai t- it was greasy and limp. Today when I showered, my hair felt almost like it had a greasy plastic coating on it. I washed with my CHS treatment poo which is loaded w/ sulfates but somehow still gentle. Still felt weird, so I washed it again and then did a PT & DT. okay, whatever it was is now gone.

I used my satin roots LI with a few drops of jojoba, and used the BS purée on top, and topped with the GVP LSG. Plopped, diffused as normal. I had zero crunch, and good curls. I can tell though it won't last through the day but my hair FEELS incredible! I like the smell of the purée surprisingly. Next time, I will use more than I did today to see if that increases the hold. I normally use the GVP LSG with my Mudd, and used the same amount I normally do. The softer hold is definitely due to the purée so I'll have to experiment with the amounts. I use copious amounts of Mudd, but am always cautious with other products and tend to use too little the first time. Overall, I think it's good and it seems to be better so far than the coil jam for me.

Here are the ingredients I found on drugstore.com for the Biotera Styling Gel:

Water (Aqua), Polyquaternium 4, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract (Nettle), Arnica Montana (Montana Flower) Extract, PPG 5 Ceteth 20, Cetrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Propylene Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, DMDM Hydantoin, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, Coumarin, Limonene, Linalool, Fragrance

Polyquat 4 as the second ingredient might be the reason you had problems removing it.

It took me a long time to figure out that my hair didn't care for polyquats. I always wondered why some products gave me more surface frizz. It wasn't terrible, it was just there. (I always expect a little frizz, after all, it is curly hair.)

Stopped using products that have polyquats and my hair is MUCH better. Sometimes, you don't realize you have an issue until you stop using certain ingredients. Your hair looks good now. Sometimes, it can just look better.

As promised, I'm back with a review of UFDCM, I have only used it once so far, and will update once I have more experience with it, but so far I LOVE IT! After finding my HG, okra gel, nothing seems to be able to compete with it and I'm constantly experimenting with things to perform like it does.

The things I look for in my HG products are: curl formation, ease of use, frizz control, and hold.

First of all, this stuff is thick, but comes with a pump which is a big plus, so very easy to apply. I don't like digging out product from a tub. It does smell like lemon pledge and I liked it; the smell fades as it dries.

The minute I raked this into my hair, the clumps literally started forming and bonding together, just like okra gel. I used three pumps total, and I felt like it was too much: it was like glue! So I super soaked to thin it out a little. I topped with a dime sized blob of LAL mega gel for addl hold.

Then I plopped for 10, and diffused....and diffused....and diffused. This stuff took forever to dry! When I could tell it was taking much longer than usual, I switched the dryer to cool (which is more like a light warm). It took a good 20 mins, when normally it only takes 10.

I swear, my hair was the curliest it's ever been after I was done! I couldn't stop touching it! And, there was NO crunch to scrunch. It was amazingly soft! It's now 3pm, and the dew point today is 76- I have very little frizz. The curls are still intact, and its still amazingly soft!

So, this so far meets all my criteria for HG status! My okra gel finally has a competitor!

I thought you would love it!
It sounds like you did use a lot. My hair is tailbone length (?) and I think I use 2-3 pumps. It always gives me great hair. I got my daughter hooked on it now so last time I ordered two bottles at a time, which saved me a few $.
    I wished aveyou.com carried it.

bumping this thread. after oogling this for months, i finally broke down and ordered it -- hated to pay that shipping price!
first day it came altho my hair was long dry, i had to try it out on dry hair. wow!! the curls formed as i was scrunching it in.
next day i just used a light leave in, and then added a little ufdcm, then more after it dried. even better!

just wondering as i continue to experiment with it, do any of you use a leave in? heavy or light?

while cj afg is my hg for mid dews, i wanted something for low dews and very high dews. i hope this works as well in low dews. :love10:

Rbb- this stuff is amazing! I've been using it now for a few months and get consistently good results from it. Where it shines, for me, is on dry hair although I use it on wet hair too. After I SOTC, or to refresh end of day or 2nd day, I just smooth this on, and voila! Clumps are back! I've read you like CJ PP on dry hair, but I think this is even better.

I rarely use a LI during the summer, but when I do I use CJ BLI or curl fix, and this plays well with or without a LI. I feel it is moisturizing on its own though.

There are so many uses for this product, I am just smitten with it!
