What to do after a bad cut? So upset.

I love my curly hair. I have thick large curls; type 3a/3b hair. I have had so many hair cut disasters, I don't know where to start. Most of them involve cutting my hair too short (since my hair is so thick, it needs to be mid back or longer dry).

Over the past year, I tried out a new salon. They specialized in Ouidad cuts. I never had a Ouidad cut before. The first time, I told the stylist/salon owner that I LOVED my length and to be extremely conservative with the Ouidad carving technique because I was scissor shy. She proceeded to give me a good (not great) cut. Since she didn't ruin it (that's my standard for a good curly haircut), I went back to her in January of this year. This time she cut more length (a little too short but I was ok with the length after one month of growth) and did more carve and slice. I didn't like the carve and slice the second time around because it made my hair, for the first time in my life, look really thin (not good) and it made it frizzy on top.

I went in one week ago for another cut and asked her to be very conservative with length because I liked the length and asked her not to do any carve and slice at all because I didn't like the frizz and thinness. She seemed very irritated and proceeded to tell me that I really should and said she wouldn't do it on the top of my hair but will on the bottom (underneath), which will avoid the frizz. I trusted her. Well, I HATE MY HAIR NOW! I CAN'T EVEN LOOK IN THE MIRROR WITHOUT TEARS WELLING IN MY EYES! Not only is it too short, but instead of having a "triangle top" I have a "mushroom top" where the top of my hair is puffy and frizzy but my curls on the bottom are stringy and EXTREMELY THIN! It looks like a geri curl when before I had long, gorgeous, flowing curly hair. It will take SO LONG to grow it out because the "carve and weave" layers are so close to my head. I might as well shave my head and start from scratch.

To add insult to injury, the cut cost $95 plus tip. Additionally, she pushes products to a point where it is extremely uncomfortable and I feel guilty for not forking over hundreds of dollars more to buy the products. Plus, during every one of these appointments, I got to the appointment early but she was running 15-30 minutes behind. Additionally, while she was working on me, she would also work on 2 other clients and worked on them while putting me under the dryer for too long of a time or letting me sit with conditioner on. For this price, I should feel pampered and not feel like she is maximizing her profit on my watch.

I want to write a yelp review about this. And a naturally curly review. But she only has good reviews that I would feel bad about writing a review like this, even though I am being completely honest. What should I do?

    I would write it, if I were you. Just to save someone from having a similar issue. A stylist should LISTEN to her/his client. My stylist really doesn't know much at all about natural curls, and is more than happy to listen to what my hair does and doesn't. Normally people think "hair is hair" NO... Just NO. Especially with curly hair.

    A stylist that won't listen is not a stylist worth seeing again or recommending.

    I'm really sorry about your experience and the state of your hair. Breathe deep, at least it will grow.

    You should definitely write your review... who cares if other people wrote good things about her? She should treat all her clients with the same level of respect and attention.

    sorry about your experience, i've been there as have most of us.

    i would definitely write the review.
    and i would not go there anymore. the method of a ouidad cut is carve and slice, so i doubt she could/would cut your hair any other way. i would stay away from ouidad stylists as this type of cut does not work for you.

    i don't know how long your hair is now, but is it possible to just get a blunt cut to take off some length which would take off some of the thinner parts of your hair? and, after that, try to find a stylist who could LONG layer the top of your hair to take away the mushroom? i think i would do this in 2 steps, blunt cut -- no layers, nothing -- around bottom, live with that while researching another stylist for the top of your hair. meanwhile, hair clips, headbands, etc... we've all been there.

    I had a horrible haircut a couple of months ago and ended up having to get a pixie just to even things out. Well, as you know, curly girls don't do well with pixie cuts. I have little curls all over my head. Don't know what to do. I can't even use heat, it's so short. do any of you know about using a hat (ski hat or whatever), wearing it while hair is damp, to sort of straighten the curls out? Any advice is much appreciated. thanks!

    This thread is a terrific reminder that we curlies are empowered by online reviews, if we choose to write them. It wasn't always like this! In days of old (not to long ago) I recall suffering a bad cut with stylists and salons pocketing my $$ w/limited consequences to their businesses. There was no such thing as reporting these heinous hair episodes to anyone but the BBB.

    I critique stylists in online (public) venues because of what the folks above said: to help warn others away from (yet another) disappointing cut or styling service PLUS you might motivate one or more rogue stylists to improve their skills/attitude, if only to clean up their online reputations.

    Oh boy do I ever feel your pain! I've had my fair share of doozies (like others, I'm sure!). I usually end up straightening mine for weeks until it grows out enough to style it curly again. Ugh, it's SUCH a nightmare though!!!

    While I can't make your hair grow, I can send a big ol' virtual hug!

    Before you write your review, honestly, I would go back and speak to the manager, be honest about the fact that this is NOT what you asked for and are most certainly NOT happy with the cut. (I'm sure the last place you want to go is back there though!)

    I became a hairdresser myself to "save the world" from hairdressers who don't know how to do curly hair! LOL! There is nothing I hate more than knowing someone is unhappy with their hair when they leave my salon. I always offer the next service for free, or refund, whatever it is to help make it right. I would hope they would do the same! I know I'm far from perfect, but I try to at least do the right thing if I screw up!!

    Maureen - I might try loading my hair up with product and drying it under a cap like you suggested too!

    Before you write your review, honestly, I would go back and speak to the manager, be honest about the fact that this is NOT what you asked for and are most certainly NOT happy with the cut. (I'm sure the last place you want to go is back there though!)

    A public, well-written online review from a customer whose stylist failed to follow direct instructions and sported an attitude while taking that customer's money (like the OP's stylist) kills two birds with one stone by simply writing online reviews:

    1. They warn potential clients about that stylist's potential to do the same thing to them.

    2. Online reviews are superb at grabbing management's attention far better than just about any personalized offline complaint (except maybe a complaint launched by a TV station). When complaints are publicized, it's the best motivator for management to deal w/problematic stylists because critical reviews directly affect the reputation of her or his establishment.

    So no, it's not economically or logistically practical or necessary for the customer to go all the way back to the place that ruined their hair to inform the manager of what that manager should have already known via careful observance of her or his staff anyway.

    I think you should write the negative review. First of all your terrible haircut. She refused to cut the way you asked her to. That's primary.
    But I also think it's important to be treated with respect and not kept waiting.
    And I won't allow anyone to pressure me into buying products.

    I've had a couple of stylists I stopped going to due to lack of respect. One took calls on her cell phone in the middle of doing my hair. The other kept me waiting each time I went for an appointment. Then the first time I was a few minues late due to trouble parking, I walked in and she was on the phone calling me to ask where I was. The last straw was when she cancelled apppointments with me twice. Both of these (unlike your stylist) were pretty inexpensive. But I still want to be treated with respect even if I have to pay more.

    I would suggest you stay away from that salon. Try to find another good stylist, either via word of mouth or reviews on this site. Go to that person for a consult and ask them what they can do to help you transition your hair back to the way you want it.

    Sorry this happened to you. It will grow back.
