Top layer not transitioning?

Hey guys, I'm new here to Naturally Curly and I wasn't quite sure which thread to put this in, but...
When I was about 13 I decided I wanted straight hair. I've had curly hair all my life, but I was sick of taking care of it and I wanted straight hair like everyone else. My hairdresser put perm in my hair and pulled it straight, and I did this for years up until the middle of my 15 year old years. I straightened it all the time, but then I decided I wanted to return back to my natural hair because 1) its easier to manage than trying to attack it with heating tools for me, and 2) because I love my curly hair
Anyway, so its been about a year and a half, maybe two years since I've used a straightener on my hair or gotten it chemically straightened. I've currently been trying to grow it longer (Its just below my collar bones now). My hair has tons of new growth and is extremely curly in parts of my hair. However, lately I've noticed that on the top layer of my hair in the back that its a little straighter and frizzy than the rest of my hair. I know that its damaged but is there any way to fix it? Whether I trim it or thin it out? Please help! Thank you!

PS. Sorry for the extremely long post but i figured the more info the better. I am also a 3a type.

I'm transitioning out of my perm & the front of my head is straighter than the back. But what has helped bring out the curl pattern in the front is the Shea moisture curl enhancing milk & smoothie. The milk you use on low humidity days & smoothie on high humidity days. The smoothie has vege glycerin in it & will fight against humidity. They both have accentuated my curl pattern & make them pop. The shine mist from this line will keep down the frizz.

When I was transitioning, I had two strands, on the end, that would not curl! It used to agitate me so bad! Since you said that the newer growth is curling better, maybe you should take the less curly parts and do a twist out? That will definitely promote a curl patter. Do a search on here for twistouts.

Also, different products might cause that hair to react differently. What products are you using?
CG, High Porosity, Fine, Low Density, Medium Elasticity
Suave, V05, GF Go clean gel, ACV rinses, CO, and Gelatine PT.

Thanks for replying! I will try a twist out sometime!
I've been using a different method which has helped some, but not quite. Only temporarily. Currently I'm using the Curls brand from target. I use the Goddess Curls Curl Gel out of the shower, diffuse, and then pineapple before bed. Then in the morning I use Lavish Curls moisturizer.

Thanks for replying! Where can I get that product? Will it help heal my hair back to normal curl pattern permanently?

I love that brand! They have great leave in's as well! I like pineapple-ing; however sometimes I feel it can stretch my curls. How is your elasticity, meaning, once you stretch your curl does it come back or is it more low where you have to really manipulate your curl to bounce back?

It's about normal elasticity. When I stretch it comes right back. Another quick question, have you seen any hair growth by pineapple-ing? I was hoping it would help my hair grow because it's not in the way when I sleep and I'm not rolling around on my curls
