3b curly hair routine - need your HELP... :(

PufPuf Posts: 28Registered Users
Hi curlies :)

I'm in a frustrated mode at the moment... On bad hair days I almost feel like crying...
My curls do not want to work with me...
My hair tends to get a bit sticky (maybe from the gel?)...
My hair doesn't clumb very nicely and when I scrunch out the crunch it gets all light and with flie-aways and not curling very nice...
My hair gets flat in the crown area and that's though I've cut the split ends (I have cut some layers today and have to wait and see if it has helped after next shower)...
My hair has no volume like it used to - and the length shouldn't be an issue if you have naturally voluminous hair, right...?

So I'm desperate for some advise and to hear your routines from turning on the water in the shower and till your hair is dry :) I need to figure this out and find a way to deal with my hair...

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! :D

Here are some pictures of my non-cooperating hair...
Last picture is before CG (started CG in Feb. 2012), where I shampooed, used a wide tooth comb and conditioner as styling (but for some reason I can't get the same look if I just use conditioner as styling now...)
/Puf :)

Modified CG since Feb. 2012
3B curls
Medium texture
Normal porosity

PS. I've used the hair routine for botticelli/corkscrew curls from the CG Handbook - but it doesn't seem to work properly...

    Awww :(

Your hair looks awesome in that last picture. I don't know a ton and I haven't read the book, but I'm thinking it might be the sulfates that made your hair BOING! like that.

Are you using any humectants or oils? It might be weighing your hair down. Maybe you need more protein?

For me, I shampoo 1-2 x per week with a sulfate-free shampoo bar. Lukewarm water. I use a light condish (Down Under Naturals Hypo-Allergenic...only available in Canadian WalMarts *I think* or Suave) and condition on the days in between. I use Aubrey Organics GPB once a week. I scrunch my hair with a t-shirt then flip my head upside down and use Tresemme Bouncing Curls gel mixed with a few drops of olive oil and scrunch that in. I flip my head over, part it on the side with a comb and finger-style. Then I let air-dry. In the winter, I use Jessicurl's method for blow drying.

I also sleep with a satin sleep cap I ordered for $10 off e-Bay.

I live in super-humid, rainy conditions (Pacific NW) and my hair can get really frizzy. With this method I find my hair is best on days I just condition, like the 2nd or 3rd day.

Hope you find something that works for you!
3b ringlets. fine texture. normal everything.

No poo: L'Oreal Eversleek Reparitive, Free Spirit Botanicals shampoo bars
    Low poo: Tresemme Naturals
Condish: YTC, Tresemme Naturals, L'Oreal Eversleek Reparitive, Down Under Naturals Hypo-Allergenic, Suave Coconut
Styling products: HEMSU gel, Tresemme Bouncing Curls gel

Yeah, I know! I love that last picture too, wish my long hair would look like it... My "signature picture" is a few months old and was on a lucky day... More of those, please! ;)

Thank you for sharing :) I don't use any oils - just conditioner and gel and 1 every 1-2 weeks a deep treatment. So I don't know what's wrong... :( I have a satin pillowcase that I sleep on and I pineapple my hair at night. I also use the diffuser on my blowdryer as show on the link you left :)

I might skip the gel and use a lighter conditioner to leave in and see what that can do... I love my curls, I really do - but it's just solo frustrating the way it looks and feels at the moment, when I know what it can look like... I want it soft and not sticky and without the fly-aways...

Man, I would love to go to NYC and have my hair done and get some advise from the DevaChanSalon !! :)

I have a mix of 3b & c hair but its really thick. I'm also a modified cg. But I use organic root stimulator twist & lock gel. It's really light. Typical gels make my hair fuzzy. But try styling milks as well. Shea moisture curl enhancing styling milk is an anti-humectant. It's shoulder help against humidity.

It's hard to tell without knowing what products you're currently using. To me it just looks weighed down. Even naturally voluminous hair can get weighed down. Maybe you just need to clarify and start over. Sulfates are not the devil. I use them, in moderation. Maybe find a shampoo with SLES (Tracy from tightlycurly uses it, it's not quite as harsh as SLS) or coco-betaine and see what happens. I like any of the Suave Naturals shampoos or Giovanni TTTT... and then use a lighter RO and LI. What are you currently using? Are you using any protein? My guess is clarifying, lighterweight conditioners, maybe laying off the DTs for a bit, and a light hit of protein would help. If it starts to get dry then you can work more moisture back in.

ETA - if your gel contains polyquats, those build up for some of us. Really need to know your current products :)
 fine, thin, normal/(low?) porosity. Mod-CG. Usually I can't co-wash more than 1x a week, & sometimes I have to use T-Gel in rotation due to scalp issues.

    Co-wash: VO5 Volumizing
    Poo: Giovanni 50:50
RO:TN, Nexxus Youth Renewal, Alba Coconut
    LI: KCKT

Yeah, it is really weighed down... :( Maybe I just start over and have a day where I don't use any styling products after showering...
My products are written above - Tresseme Natural Conditioner and a gel that you don't have in US (I'm from Denmark, so we don't have a range of products like you do unfortunately)...

Use Amazon or eBay, you can get a better selection of products than in the stores. Otherwise maybe order from British Curlies Curly Emporium if the postage and packaging is not too crazy. Quite a bit comes in travel or sample sizes, you could get a ton of different ones and really experiment. Here is the UK there are quite a few grocery store and pharmacy own brands that are CG-friendly and cheap, we are not all using curly brands by any means.
2a-2c, medium texture, porous/ colour treated. Three years CG. Past bra strap length heading for waist.

CO-wash: Inecto coconut/ Elvive Volume Collagen
Treatments: Komaza Care Matani, coconut/ sweet almond/ fractionated coconut oils, Hairveda Sitrinillah
Leave in: Fructis Sleek & Shine (old), Gliss Ultimate Volume, various Elvive
Styler: Umberto Giannini jelly, Au Naturale styling gelee
Flour sack towel, pixie diffuse or air dry.
    Experimenting with: benign neglect
