Help! A Newbie with Damaged Hair!

Hey, fellow curlies...

So, I've been SUPER frustrated with my hair... I was wondering why the CG method wasn't working for me...

My hair is very damaged from A LOT of coloring pre-CG. I have 3A hair, but it now has random straight and dry pieces. It is like my hair is trying to curl, but it can't, so it frizzes. Before I started coloring my hair, I used to have really pretty ringlets.

What do I do? Should I call a salon and get an appointment? I've done protein and moisture treatments at home... I don't know what to do. I am SO frustrated! :banghead:

(P.S. This is my hair now.)

What have you been doing? What products are you using? How long? I think answers to some of those will help people with suggestions. (Sometimes I think you have to be patient too.)

I have been using Nature's Gate Biotin Strengthening condish as a rinse-out, VO5 Strawberries and Cream for co-wash. My styler is usually Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly or Totally Twisted. Gels do not work well for me. Even the lightest gel makes my hair feel like straw.

I do the Ice Queen method, then I usually squeeze excess water out and then blot with a floursack towel. I scrunch/smooth in my mousse.

I cannot plop or even diffuse or I get frizz.

I also notice that even in the shower after I have squeezed the excess water out I have frizz/random stringy straight strands. I really think that is a sign of damaged hair.

I wonder if it's too dry by the time you try to distribute the mousse. If I try to apply something by then the hair sticks a little and messes up clumping unless I wet hand it in. Your curls might be strong enough too to take it in when it's pretty wet and then towel. Also ( and I'm still pretty new only doing this about 5 weeks) I discovered I kind of death scrunch in product or with towel. If I scrunch much more gently, slower and hold to give the towel a chance to suck up water it disturbs things less. Instead of scrunch scrunch scrunch it's more like scruuunch hold. Scruuunch hold. If that makes sense. Your goal is to do as little disturbing as possible.

Hi there! It also sounds like too little moisture to me. Especially when you say your hair already frizzes in the shower. Maybe your hair needed more moisture after the PT and a one time DT wasn't enough. You can test this by leaving protein out completely for one (or couple of) time(s) and using a moisturizing leave in before putting in styling products. Check if your mousse have drying alcohol in it or protein high on the list!
Hope your hair gets better soon!

Hair properties are really important to know. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics It helps people help you. I'm assuming your porous because of the damage and the dryness that's visible. Your hair needs to be treated with lots of TLC. PTs are good, DTs even better.

Frizz when wet can be indicative of build up. Depending on your hair, you may be able to do a lowpoo to remove ingredients. My hair usually needs a stronger surfactant.

Personally, I'd stay away from mousse even if it doesn't contain drying alcohols. The propellent can also be drying.

If your hair is really damaged from the color, nothing will help except cutting it off. That would be the reason to go to a salon. Any other processing would only cause more damage.

Definitely cut out the damage, be sure your protein is hydrolysed so it absorbs and don't overdo protein. Coconut oil is wonderful for damaged and porous hair.

Try a gel containing a fair amount of humectants like propylene glycol, assuming you are in the right climate for that - maybe Curl Keeper - or even a curl cream or make an Ecostyler custard with any gel plus a little oil (see YouTube). Mousse is often not enough to 'glue together' damaged strands to make clumps.

You're not kidding about the coconut oil. I feel like I went from "clown wig" to "shampoo commercial" after leaving it on my hair for an hour this morning before rinsing. It is magical.

    Photos attached:
Red polka-dotted 2a is yesterday (day 5-ish of mod-CG) and turquoise sweatered 3a is today (day 6).

    I can't recommend it highly enough. :hello1:
Medium texture, Normal porosity, medium density, textures run the gamut from 2a-3c. Artificially red.

    Currently fiddling with:
debatably-poo: DCNP, Tressa Watercolors (Crimson Splash)
cw&c: DevaCare, Heaven in Hair, Ouidad Climate Control
leave-in: Lush R&B Hair Moisturizer, some of above, EVCO
product: DC FFVF, DC AnGel, DCCC, OCC, JCCC, JCRR, 3SCG

I'm a terrible product junkie but I don't buy or use anything that's tested on animals. :hippy2:

Yey! Try leaving the oil in overnight for even better results, a disposable shower cap plus turban towel stays in place well. Or there is the Movie Star Method (coconut oil shampoo).
