My 2 almost 3 yr old daughter is mixed Spanish/black n her hair is crazy curly. I think 3b/4a hair maybe even a little 4b. The only time her hair looks nice is right after it's been washed n styled. I recently cut her hair cuz it was so uneven n I've been letting her wear her hair out to give it a break from having been in pony tails all the time I'm hopes it'd grow better, her hair was suffering from breakage n dryness. But the thing is her hair sticks straight up after it's fully dried. How can I get her curls to come down n not look like she stuck her finger in a socket? What products n techniques are the best to keep the frizz away n keep her curls defined n looking nice?

Aww she's super cute. What products are you using on her right now? It might be worth doing the Curly Girl method on her. Go to the Newbie section for a sticky thread about that. Even if you don't, you should be using a pretty good moisturizing conditioner and probably using some as a leave in. Some people just have hair that grows out before it grows down, but You can weight it down some with conditioner. I think it's super adorable the way it is. :)

To help her maintain her style, you could buy a satin bonnet for when she sleeps. You can also use a satin scarf for her car seat and a satin pillow case. That just helps her hair not get her hair roughed up. Of course, she's still little so you can't totally prevent that. You could also give yourself a break by doing braids and twists as protective styles sometimes. You can go over to the 4 board for more help and encouragement, because sometimes this board can get overlooked.

Thank you! Right now I wash her hair once a week with Shea Moisture moisture retention shampoo n conditioner I cowash once or twice in between shampoos but I do rinse her hair with water every bath. I apply lots of coconut oil at bed time. I have also been using herbal essence curl silkening detangler. should I be using a separate leave in conditioner?

Nah, but you might get less dryness if you take a little of her normal conditioner and put maybe a bit back in her hair as a leave in. That's very easy, and helps moisturize the hair. Also, if you're using products with silicones you might need to occasionally wash with a stronger shampoo with coco betaine because I thing the Shea Moisture shampoo is very light and might allow silicone build up. I'm thinking specifically about build up from the detangle. A lot of people find they can mix conditioner and water in a spray bottle and use that as a detanglerc btw.

you received some great tips. I also wanted to add that you may want to add a bit of gel (perhaps 98-100% aloe vera gel) to her hair. it will help keeps the curls you see when her hair is wet.
