I need some advice on what to do with my hair!

Okay so, to start off, I'm 'mixed'. But not in the way that I have a black mom/dad and a white mom/dad. Both of my parents were considered black- but THEY were mixed in a way, and so I'm mixed. My hair is naturally curly, and it used to be a lot more curly but I straightened it for about a year straight in 8th grade. When I was in 4th or 5th grade, my mom put a relaxer in my hair. It was a bit too strong, and it damaged a little because I went swimming alot the summer after, but I've grown it out since then, of course. Now, if I put 'Mixed Chicks' and some mousse in it, it gets pretty curly, but the roots and the tip of my hair towards my forehead, and the back is either really tightly curly or super frizzy! My ends aren't lookin' to hot either. My mom says I should get a texturizer, but from what I understand that LOOSENS the curls, it doesn't define them. I'd like to actually be able to wear my hair down once in a while, instead of up in a ponytail, but it's just...not enough curls and too much frizz!
Any advice about the texturizer, products (if you think I haven't tried them :/), or styles are greatly appreciated! I'm not entirely sure if this is the right...topic..forum..thing to ask this question in...I'm a newbie. Sorry if it isn't!
