How to get root curl?

Hello, I wanted to know if you gals have any tips on how I can get the hair on top of my head to be curly too? My hair's about bra length, and it's plenty curly on bottom, but wavy and straight for the rest. My dream hair would be to have something like Jennifer Beal's on Flashdance, if that gives you any ideas on what I hope I can achieve. I specifically don't want to do anything heat related like perms or curling irons if that's possible.

Anyway, any helpful tips would be very appreciated. :)

I never had root curl until I started lurking on Before that, I had never used any products other then shampoo/conditioner. I learned to take care of my hair--and was rewarded with tighter curls up to the root. Not everyone can attain root curl. Your hair has it, or it doesn't. If you treat it well, have the right haircut, etc., you may maximize your curl potential and achieve it.

The weight of your hair may pull out your root curl--if you have it. One thing to make sure that you do is have a good haircut with the proper layering.

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics Once you determine your properties, look for others with hair like yours and see what they use (in signature.) It's the best place to start.

As someone who used to have a pixie and grew it out all the way to her breasts again I have to say Kathymack's right, it's probably the weight of your hair. I bet when it's short it's curlier at the root. Try clipping at the root. It helps a lot. I've been experimenting every time I washed my hair the past few weeks. I find I like traditional cross clipping the best. It gives me curl one inch down from the root as opposed to two or three, which is what I usually end up with. I'm going to experiment with putting product on the roots next because I usually don't bother.
