I would quote and summarize, but it's hard to do from my phone:

Explosion hits fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas - CNN.com

:( What's going on?! I hope that this was an industrial accident.

Here is another article, Moody. It looks like a small fire broke out and when water was sprayed on it, due to ammonia nitrate, the plant exploded.

I hope the Texas curlies are okay. Based on this article, several fire fighters and near by residents were injured.

I can not even begin to imagine what it is like in their 911 office/EOC right now. That would be devastating. You lose extended co workers/family, a nursing home and several houses are devastated, and you have a large scale hazmat situation and evacuation going on thanks to the dangerous chemicals in the air... That is a horrific night. No time to grieve. No time to think about it.

My thoughts are with everyone involved.

    One more updated article.

I appreciate that Emergency Services are refusing to release death totals and names at this time. Families should be notified first, and the media does not need something else to run rampant with. Give them time to get accurate information.

Moodydove, I don't live in Texas. I was raised there, but now live in Arizona. Thanks for the concern.
    From Michael Berg:

Every person has a unique connection to the Creator that can never be extinguished, and every person has a great soul that can manifest important things in our world. To make a person feel less than they are because of something inside themselves, be it faith, race, or sexual orientation, is the greatest sin of all."

My sorority sister is from a small town just next to it, but her family is fine.

My line is going over there this weekend to help out.

So there was a fire and they responded incorrectly causing an explosion?
The news said several firefighters are missing and the explosion registered ad an earthquake. :(

That was the initial report. First it was a small fire but when water was applied, it cause the explosion. My mom said that she was hearing nothing in the plant should have exploded this morning, but this is not the first time it has happened. One of the worst industrial accidents was in a Texas fertilizer plant, years ago. It (an explosion) killed many people.

Yes, several fire fighters, first responders, and possibly some police officers are missing. Early this morning they had 700 emergency responders on scene. It sounds like people from all over went to help them.

^ That is a good thing. I have not heard details this morning but I do think they had several leveled houses/buildings to search and the evacuation. They will need all the help they can get.

So no one knew not to douse the fire with water? Or maybe there was some chemical in there that should not have been there?

I have no idea. It all depends. It could have been a fire fighter, an employee or responder not trained in fire fighting could have thrown water on it, some strange occurrence, or a combination of many factors. There is no way of knowing right now, and I seriously doubt anyone is left alive to tell the exact details.

It's really bad. I had a friend with family in the area. Her aunt lives 5 miles from the plant and it knocked out her sliding glass door and blew her wooden door off. There were several homes, apartments, nursing home, all leveled near by...Tons and tons are of homes and businesses are severly damaged.

There are missing firemen and policeman that were working the fire when the explosion went off. Last I heard 15 confirmed dead but they have not found all the missing. Tons of search and rescue teams are working right now.

This is a very small community. Town is around 2500 people. Most people that travel this stretch of I-35 know the town because of the bakery right off the interestate.

Please keep this community in your thoughts and prayers.

They might want to check the details first. They are not letting anyone but emergency responders in the immediate area right now. Some near by shelters may be accepting help. Idk.

From what I am seeing/hearing now a tank of chemicals combusted/exploded and the rain and wind seemed to knock down the the hazmat threat in the area. That is good news. The main problem they are having now is unstable structures that can not be searched. They have to attempt stabilization before they can enter.

I absolutely am and will. This would be devastating anywhere, but completely crushing in a small town.

I am glad so many responders have came to help and support them. They can at least force people to take a break, and help make up for the loss of members (many I am sure are volunteer). Trying to find survivors and care for them is #1.

(((Hugs))) to your friend and her family members.

Ya they aren't going to the actual town but near by I think.

its pretty horrific. I've spent a lot of my day working on disaster response. The one thing that kind of saved things was the rain. If it was dry and windy, all of that chemical crap in the air would have made things a lot worse. I won't post the video, but there is a youtube video of a guy with his daughter filming the whole thing live.

^ That has been all over the news. I came in to post that CNN just did an interview with her. They said so many people had asked that the child be found, to make sure she was okay. She is.

((((Hugs)))) to you Webjockey. I know you have to need one right now. That has to be an incredibly rough situation.

They were telling some rather touching stories about people BBQing for everyone on the street. As my Aunt would say, "This is the South. If something happens, you throw a casserole at it".

Webjockey, do you live in the area...or is your job taking you to West? For some reason I thought you lived in the Austin area.
  • webjockeywebjockey Posts: 2,786Registered Users
My service territory stretches all the way up to McLennan county where West is.

The hardest part is the first 24 hours of response. Lots of misinformation about what is needed by first responders and potential for scams. People expect immediate and frequent updates, and from a fundraising perspective, there is a very brief period of time before people move on. It's really about quick coordination and consistent messaging.

Luckily (or sadly) I've been through this many times so I kinda know the drill. It's just exhausting to work quickly like that + I had to present at a luncheon on social media + I have a big festival to promote this weekend + my little girl has been sick with a low grade fever.

Compared to the folks in West, I really shouldn't complain.
