Every time I see an itchy scalp/dandruff question I just want to pull out my tea tree oil and be like, "This is the oil of life." Which is to say, I use to have an itchy, flaking scalp, and incorporating a tea tree oil based shampoo really helps get rid of it for me. I use Tea Tree Dr. Bronners Magic Soap, but it isn't very moisturizing. Shea Moisture has a tea tree shampoo, and other shampoo companies do too. Tea Tree oil is really light, like the oil itself practically feels like water, so it probably won't make you more oily. I can't be sure though, because I have a dry scalp. All that said, I know it doesn't work for everyone.

You could also try dry shampoos on second and third day hair. I'm not sure on exact brands, but if you look up dry shampoo in the search bar maybe you can find a thread about them.

OP: it's possible you're allergic to something in the products you're using so trying a more natural lo-poo/cowash might help. Some people have issues with tea tree oil too so start slow. Really that's true of any treatment though.

Oh no. O.O Thanks for catching that. I edited it a couple weeks ago, so my computer probably changed that word. Or, you know, maybe I just felt that my hair was the correct, perfectly average amount of electrifying that day.

I second tea tree oil! It's aloud me to get 4 day hair! As soon as I feel itchy I just smooth it on my scalp using my fingertips. I get relief probably within like 1/2 hr and then the miracle is the next day my scalp is still calm and I can stretch my hair out another day!

Hi! Do you have to dilute the tea tree oil at all before you apply it? I thought it was supposed to be pretty potent by itself, no?

Angelica, I dilute it. Here is a thread in which I explain what I do:

    http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/general-discussion-about-curly-hair/155275-how-do-you-use-tea-tree-oil.html

See post #4 for what I do.

Or you could add a few drops to the cowash, yes. The smell is pretty strong but it washes out of course and disappears if you dilute it sufficiently before applying on maybe 2nd or 3rd day hair.

I heard (and probably am going to try that this evening) that a brown sugar scrub can help for itching scalp problems.
It's in the CG handbook. You are supposed to mix 1 tbsp of brown sugar with 3tbsp of your conditioner, then scrub that mix on your scalp, rinse it out and just continue your normal routine after that.

Does anyone know if this helps?
It's time for me to wash my hair anyways... rocking 4th day hair now without even rewetting once (really nice after my bad hair week last week...)
And does brown sugar have any other (unwanted?) effects on hair?

I tried it... my hair isn't dry yet so I don't really now if it helped or not.
The thing I already noticed: maybe raw sugar (the thicker kind) would be better, more scrubby.
At least I'm very very sure that it wasn't bad for my hair, since it seems I'm heading to a good hairday after a bad hair WEEK.

    So: conclusion:
    - Bad result: NO
    - good result: maybe
    - recommendation: use thicker kind of sugar for more scrubbing results

Try NOT using conditioner on your scalp. It's friction that cleans your scalp, so really give your scalp a good rubbing/massaging with your fingertips under running water, or use a scalp brush. It's a small and oval shaped with short stiff bristles available at Sally's for a couple bucks.

Then apply conditioner through your hair and rinse well before applying your styling products.

A brown sugar scrub works great for me as a weekly treatment against my itchy scalp & buildup. Just be sure to use a lot of both brown sugar and conditioner and MAKE sure you don't stir it for very long at all. It WILL dissolve if you stir it for too long and then it won't be an effective cleanser/exfoliator.

After I do a brown sugar scrub I don't get anymore white gunk under my fingernails...eww, but true!

Brown sugar scrubs do work if you have buildup. Be sure to get brown sugar in the raw (ungranulated), the kind that look like teeny rock crystals. And yes, don't stir too much. Kinda toss it around once or twice. However, I honestly haven't had to do a brown sugar scrub for well over two months or a tea tree treatment recently either. I credit that to my fabulous co-wash, Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle. It doesn't buildup and cleanses my scalp very nicely. Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat is supposed to be a lot like it and they sell it at Whole Foods, Target, Iherb. . .

Giovanni, Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Conditioner, 8.5 fl oz (250 ml) - iHerb.com

Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner - 8.5 oz. : Target

I also credit my buildup free scalp to the Shea Moisture low poos, which I use once a week interchangeably. They are gentle on my scalp and don't strip my hair. Especially since I've taken to pre pooing every time I use them. Actually I have taken to pre pooing a little before every wash, co or low poo, and that's been protecting the body of my hair a lot. (I have coarse, highly porous hair and we have very dry weather right now.)

I don't know of any ill effects from brown sugar scrubs. I strongly recommend against the quinoa alternative, though – thought I was never going to get that out of my hair, and might end up with the chia hair look.

I've tried raw sugar once when I was traveling and didn't have brown sugar, but ran across a packet. Brown sugar is better. It doesn't feel as scrubby, but that also means it isn't roughing up your scalp or hair.

Grr, I'm still getting buildup and I think it's from me combing in my leave in conditioner after I get out if the shower, I need to detangle again. If I don't comb my hair again my hair is stuck to my scalp and I can't seem to scrunch any stylers with it stuck to my scalp like that. I've tried rinsing and adding stylers upside down but then all of the manipulation/rearranging of my curls when i flip back to right side up defeats the purpose of frizz free clumps. I wish I knew something different to try so I don't have leave in conditioner sitting on my scalp. My hair is so long, fine and prone to tangles that no matter how good my rinse out conditioner is I'm stumped as for what to do after the final rinse.
