Yup, I used lube on my hair!

LuuuuucyLuuuuucy Posts: 146Registered Users
I have come really close to throwing in the towel on my waves. But, this might save me. We'll see if its a one hit wonder. I used lube! Personal lubricant, from CVS. I saw the recommendation on the flaxseed gel thread, as a replacement for curl keeper. Thought what the heck. I did absolutely nothing else to my hair- raked in the lube, about a quarter to half dollar puddle on my bra length hair, brushed through with a Denman and plopped for a few minutes. No other products, just to see what happened. Very soft and no frizz. I hope it keeps working! I might need to add gel for hold or more frizz control in high humidity.

So this is about the glycerin then? Looks nice.

I haven't narrowed down which products work on my hair and which don't, but yes, this has glycerin. So apparently it worked for me (today! Tomorrow is a new day...).

I used lube with gel over it in the warmer/more humid weather and it worked GREAT for me, every day. It seems to make my hair more consistent.

Of course, I've switched up my entire routine over the dry winter and now I'm trying to figure out how I will work it back in, but I will find a way!

    2c/3a, fine, low porosity.

Poo: Garnier Fructis Pure Clean (yes, it has A Sulfate!!, but I have Teflon hair)
Co-wash (when I feel so inclined, which isn't often!): VO5 Kiwi Lime Clarifying Conditioner
    Conditioner/LI:
same for both -- whatever I have in the shower at the time (I experiment a lot)
    Style: EcoStyler Olive Oil <3
Dry: Diffuse or air dry, or both...depends on my mood

haha, I've never used lube on my hair, but today I did spray a glycerin/water mixture into my hair. It helps to refresh my hairstyle.

Do you have to wash it out with a shampoo (will it build up) or will it come out with a co-wash?

Just curious to try this, especially since someone said it worked well in warm humid weather, and we're about to have that in spades.
Started embracing the 2b waves in March 2013. I can't believe how immediate the difference, when I stopped using sulfates! Now I need guidance on most everything else. :sunny:
My best guess so far at my hair profile: 2b, medium porosity, fine and med width strands, low-to-med density, medium length.

(I feel kind of weird writing my first post in a thread about lube, so I wanted to write a quick introduction. Hi! I have known about natural hair care and even about CG for a few years now, but it has only been recently that I have decided that I want to embrace my waves. So here I am, willing to learn :D  )

Anyway, I just wanted to say what a genius idea this is! I have been browsing through gels in the products reviews section and getting more and more frustrated because they all seem to contain some sort of botanical extract or other ingredients I'm allergic to.To my surprise there are many lubes available with ingredients just like any other gel you would use for skin or hair care.
I am thinking about ordering one of this one to use as a base to add oils and other ingredients when the weather gets warmer in a few weeks:

    Gel
Purified water, Plant Cellulose (from cotton), Cyamopsis (Guar Conditioners), Carrageegan, Nori & Wakame (Seaweed Extracts), Potassium Sorbate

If anyone is interested I can post some other suggestions (leaving out those with raunchy names) including their ingredients.

    Have a lovely day :cat:

It shouldn't have any ingredients that will cause build up. :) I've had no problems at all!

It's Sliquid Sea, however, the ingredient list I first posted was not complete, the gel contains citric acid too. Sliquid Oceanics has the same ingredients, on top of that it contains other nice stuff like aloe vera and flaxseed extract.

I have read that guar and algae are film forming - both of them are in the gel I wanted to try. I wonder if I would be fine with regular clarifying treatments?

Feline, did any of the Sliquids end up working for you?

I ordered some "lube cubes" so I could try differing ones. I've only tried the H2O so far but found it left my hair dull and a bit ashy looking.

    Any luck?
