Curls that spread at ends?

bosanbobosanbo Posts: 180Registered Users
I'm curious if other folks on the cusp of 2C/3A have this issue: your curls are tightly defined down by your scalp, and then sort of... expand toward the end, and fan out? It's hard to describe, but I suspect if it happens to someone they know what I mean. I get this from time to time, and I'm trying to pin down what causes it. I'd like the more tightly defined ends (and hey, looser by the scalp while we're wishing for things). I feel like I have "reverse curly" hair sometimes! It definitely contributes to triangle-head days.

I've tried sealing my ends with oil, but my hair dislikes most oils. Gel works pretty well if I don't SOTC... but I am definitely not going to leave my hair crunchy!

I don't hate this. I'm just curious, and I've been learning so much from this forum I figured I'd give it a shot.

Yes, I have that issue. I don't like it at all! If someone figures out a way to combat this - please post.

It makes my hair messy and triangular. I've tried crimping and I've tried braiding. No luck. Maybe if my hair was in great shape it wouldn't do this, but I dye it so it's never totally healthy.

I often wish for curlier hair (sometimes defined as kinky) because then the curls might stay put!
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

Curlypearl - I have undyed, untreated hair with a tightly closed cuticle that was described as "very healthy" by my curlygirl stylist. So I'm not sure health/damage is necessarily to blame. It's interesting that we are opposite porosity and have the same issue. Is your hair fine?

I'm not sure if I necessarily have this same issue, but my hair is more tightly curled up top and gets "fluffier" toward the ends, especially where it's layered (my hair is long - past BSL). I add extra condish to the ends when I'm in the shower, and I add a bit more LI to these areas too. My LI contains protein. It's seeming to help so far, but I still don't have it completely under control. Do you diffuse? Diffusing upside down with the pixie curl method might help to even out the volume, or at least create that illusion.

Again, not sure if this is necessarily the same issue, but hope it helps :)

Just as a side note, my LI is actually a curl enhancing cream that I use like a LI, so that may have something to do with it also.

JamfoW, that sounds like it, yes. I'm going to try using my GPB on just the ends and not quite rinsing totally. Thanks for the idea!

Also, I mostly air dry. Volume isn't really the issue for me, it's more the... floofing of the ends. I'd just like my curls to hang together all the way down.

Mine, or at least most of mine does this, but I think it is how the layers were cut. Too "shelfy". Not happy about that, but I guess I just have to let it grow out more before I address it. I don't want the ends taken off just for that. :(

This happened to me once, as the result of an unfortunate razor haircut. I'm not sure it was the razor so much as the very erratic (not chunky) layers and thinning. Once the razored ends were trimmed out (four months later, ugh), problem solved.

Probably not your issue, but perhaps worth noting if someone else is struggling with it.

Mine does that more when it needs a trim or cut. It still happens a little anyway (I wish my ringlets were tighter at the ends like some wavies), but it's much more noticeable when I need a cut. It also is more noticeable if I have too many layers. My ringlets and waves look better overall with little to no layering.
