What would be the bad ingredient in this conditioner?

NelekeNeleke Posts: 456Registered Users
So ... today I used a conditioner for the first time and it didn't work out good (this is the first time that I have a product my hair seems to hate).
So... I first cowashed with yes to cucumbers, then did a rinse out with a conditioner with avocado and karité butter (I used those two before and they didn't give me any problems), then I used my new conditioner (which was cheap, I'm glad) which contains aloe vera and coconut oil.
The moment I put that conditioner on my hair I could feel my hair change. It became "less soft" so I rinsed it out as quickly as I could. I first thought it was because of the protein in aloe vera, but I think I'm not proteinsensitive since I did a gelatintreatment 2 days ago and my hair didn't react bad (I didn't really notice any difference before-after in fact) and I already used the avocadoconditioner with good results...
So... what ingredient would be causing my problems according to you?

Ingredients in the new conditioner:
Aqua, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, cetearyl alcohol, coco-caprylate, inulin, glycerin, glyceryl stearate citrate, glyceryl stearate, cocos nucifera oil, betaine, xanthan gum, cetearyl glucoside, biosaccharide gum-1, glyceryl caprylate, parfum (natural), tocopherol, linalool, limonene, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, lactic acid, sodium hydroxide

Any idea?

It's possible that you're allergic/sensitive to aloe vera. Some other people here have the same.

Benzyl alcohol can be a bit drying, but it's very low in the ingredients list so I don't think that's the problem.

I do not know coco-caprylate and inulin...

It might be the aloe. My hair loves protein, but aloe doesn't work like a protein in my hair. It makes it feel rough and gross. Aloe can just be weird in some people's hair. If you had any, you could try it on your hair directly to see how it reacts, but there's no need really. That said, aloe in a well formulated product where it isn't a main ingredient can work for me.

Inulin is fiber. It's weird to see it listed in conditioner... It's in a lot of health/snack bars because it provides that "full" feeling, and... other things that fiber does. It is a prebiotic, meaning when you eat it, it encourages good bacterial life in your guts.

I must now go Google to see why in the world it is in a hair care product...

EDIT: Ok, I'm seeing it billed as a moisturizer (derived from chicory root), which appears to be similar in effect to agave nectar. Again, it's an odd one, so that might be it? Found: "The agent moisturises and straightens damaged hair."

    I was wondering...
Could it also be the glycerin (6th place) that is my problem?
Today I used a low poo shampoo and that one had a drying effect on my hair as well, and I checked out the ingrediënts and that one has glycerin in the 5th place.
That shampoo and the aloe vera conditioner are the only products I have with glycerin in them. (I don't have other product with aloe vera in them I guess)

First 5 ingredients for that shampoo: Aqua, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, laureth-5 carboxylic acid, cocamidopropyl betaine, glycerin

I was thinking it was the glycerin. I have heard it reacts different to climate so if dew points are low it could be drawing moisture out of your hair

I'm guessing the aloe too - my hair feels awful when I use it. I also don't like glycerin but the bad effects of that only show when my hair has dried, it's not an instant thing like it is with the aloe.
