Those of you with a weak wave pattern, what products + techniques work best for you?

kaykrekaykre Registered Users Posts: 314 Curl Neophyte
My hair is 2A, medium thickness, very dense, and very porous. I have a very weak wave pattern. Without products, I have almost no wave (just lots of body and frizz).
2A/B. Mix of fine, medium, and coarse (mostly medium). Dense. Mix of normal and high porosity.
Dry climate.

Diffusing really helps, as well as having enough length to my layers to let the S curl form.

TY! Have you found a way to enhance wave without diffusing? I have a diffuser but am too lazy to use it daily.

Diffusing is really what does it for me. It just perks everything up.

I second the diffusing. I low poo and use a rinse out. Then I rake in a leave in, AG recoil curl activating cream, and AIF gel or As I Am curling Jelly (depending on dew points), then scrunch, then pixie diffuse for a good 20-30 minutes until about 85% dry. Air dry the rest and SOTC. Then when I go to bed at night, I pineapple my hair. Then for 2nd-4th day hair, I just spritz it a bit, scrunch a little, diffuse each section for like 30 seconds, and go. My spritz consists of a spray bottle full of water with a few squeezes of KCKT leave in conditioner mixed in.

Products that help my wave: loreal everstyle beach spray, loreal out of bed putty, curly sexy spray mousse, and moroccan oil mousse.

Protein really helps my wave too. My hair is really fine though.

I find that scrunching in my leave in whole my hair is soaking wet helps. Then I scrunch with a microfiber towel to get excess water out. After that I use the beach wave spray and a mousse. I scrunch with the hand dry hair glove and then I plop for about 15 minutes. Take down and let air dry. Diffusing also enhances my waves, but I rarely do it.

I second AKgirl' s method, with slight variation in products. I use AG:recoil to amp up the curl, especially in the low dews we are still having. And I always diffuse. It adds volume to the waves, and as a good Southern girl, I go for big hair every time. My hair has definitely developed a stronger wave and actual curls in the last three months. I haven't blown it dry straight at all, only scrunched and diffused. Between that and adding a curl activator my hair seems to have moved from "product wavy" to truly wavy. I can cowash, scrunch, plop, diffuse without adding gel or mousse and get soft waves and curl here and there that look pretty good now. Your wave pattern may strengthen over time as you try different things to encourage it. For me, it's an experiment every day. I pineapple at night and try to go 2-3 days between washes. I may scrunch w a water mist the next day and I often use dry shampoo on day three if the roots seem oily. HTH!

And Jackrussel3, your hair is lovely. Did you clip the roots in your avatar pic? Sometimes I get volume there by just diffusing and other times its very flat or weirdly parted. I still don't have a good technique down for dealing with the crown. I suspect I should arrange the curls or something before diffusing but the only time I tried that skip curl thingy it was an epic fail.

I really like the Curl Junkie line. Especially something like Aloe fix lite for second/third day hair. I love CIAB too. Pixie diffuse does help to keep the waves/curls you have scrunched in.

Last week I did a DT with JC WDT and I had really beautiful waves. I don't know if that actually was the reason for the great hair but with 3rd day hair I had 6 corkscrews. Yay!

    Course, thick hair, low/med. porosity

    My hair likes:
CJ CIAB, CJ AFL, KCCC KCNT
    CJ Daily Fix

    |t alsn likes JC WDT, but the smell is weird.

This is actually my third time going CG. But this time i'm trying to imbrace my waves more instead of trying to get the most curl out of them. Pretty, shiney waves should be enough

I had trouble finding it too, but I don't think it's been discontinued. I ended up finding it in my local grocery store. It wasn't with the other loreal products which was weird.

In my CVS, the LOOB is also in a separate aisle, with the hairsprays and stylers, and sells for $4.99.

Thanks for the feedback on diffusing vs. air drying. Now I have to find a decent diffuser (mine is a small one, not the recommended bowl type).

I've only been CG for 2 months now and I haven't really used any gels... my hair is still naked most of the time as it's hard to find CG products where I live. Anyway in the short time I've been CG and with hardly any styling products (I've only tried Giovanni Direct Leave-in which I'm not loving and EO Tame gel which has glycerin so not ideal) I've seen my curl pattern get tighter and I think it's mostly due to a. no shampoo (I was low-poo before) and b. holding up my hair while rinsing it out. It's explained in the CG book... you scrunch up your hair with your hands while it's loaded with conditioner and let the water run through your fingers and the hair while it is still up in the S shape. Lately I've been doing the ice queen method w/out scrunching it and while that is saving my canopy now the middle layers are losing curl. So that makes me think rinsing method is really important. Also I've had to low-poo recently and my curl is loosening up again... it actually amazes me how much a shampoo affects the wave/curl, even a gentler poo.

Fyi my properties are medium-fine, high porosity, normal elasticity, medium density... I think. And 2a/2b.
