New To The Curly Girl Method

OhSunshinex3OhSunshinex3 Posts: 74Registered Users
I haven't started yet but I plan to. I do already own the DevaCurl One Condition and I think it smells great and makes my hair soft. I've used it as a leave-in conditioner too. I'm just trying to find out what products I want to use. This is my plan so far.

Co-wash: Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut
Rinse Out: DevaCurl One Condition
Leave-in: DevaCurl One Condition
Styling: DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel

I'm still debating on whether I want to buy any low/no poo. But I'm not sure. If I did, I'd probably get the DevaCurl one too. I'd also like to try to find something different to use as a rinse out or leave-in so I don't use too much of my One Condition too fast because it is pricey.

I definitely want to start using the Curly Girl method soon. Just have to get around to buying the Defining Gel because I don't really have anything that's too CG friendly. I do have the Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner and the Anti-Frizz serum but I've read that those aren't that great so I'm a little unsure but may have to resort to them until I can buy the products I have in mind.

I have type 3a curly hair so if you have any other recommendations, I'd be glad to take them into consideration. :)

Read the labels, if you're CG, you can't use some of your "old" products. They have cones!

The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics Once you determine your properties, look for people with hair like yours and see what they use (in signature.) It's the best place to start.

Around here, Deva is a love/hate line. Many of us start out with it, think we like it and then move on to things we like a whole lot more. My salon has the Deva products. I used to let them use the NoPoo when I went in for my haircut. When they changed the ingredients several years ago, I found it very drying. Now, I bring my own product for cleansing.

Welcome! As Kathymack said, hair properties are definitely the key to finding the best products for your hair.
I happen to be one of those people who does still use Deva products (though not exclusively). The Ultra Defining Gel is my current absolute favorite gel. I try to mix pricier items with less expensive items to keep the budget under control also. If the Deva One C is working for you, you might want to look into Regis Olive Oil Conditioner. It's less than half the price of One C and you can get it at Regis Salons (including the ones in WalMart) or online. I've also found that I prefer VO5 conditioners for co-washing rather than Suave Naturals (Vanilla Mint Tea is my favorite).
If you're on the fence about low-poo, you can also try cleansing conditioners (like Deva No-Poo). They're a nice happy medium between straight co-washing and using a low-poo. Some less expensive options include L'Oreal EverCreme or EverCurl Cleansing Conditioners, which people seem to like as long a they're okay with the perfume-y smell, or As I Am Coconut Co-Wash (available at Sally's). There are a few others available in drugstores, but these are the ones that I've like best.

Looked up the Regis Olive Oil conditioner and there are many good responces. Definitely going to have to check that out. And I plan to try VO5 products too because they are equally as cheap as Suave. I just have always been more of a Suave person and it works well so far. Thank you! Both of you!

Warning: the loreal ever creme sulfate free shampoo (I know you were talking about the conditioner, but double check that too!) has a cone. Why, on earth, would they put a cone in a sulfate free shampoo!!???

I personally love the DevaCare low-poo! If you like suave products start there! Good luck!

Experimenting with Got2B Ultra gel and loving it so far!

Thank you. I have a list of cheaper products I plan to check out once I rub low of my basics but I have found that the DevaCurl One Condition and the Ultra Defining Gel work very well together. I tried substituting my Suave Naturals as a leave-in to see if I could just switch to that but it loosed up my curls so I wasn't too happy but I have a few leave-ins that I plan to check out. Hopefully all goes well. :)

Run* but I find that all the Deva products work very well for me and I have decided against any low poo because co-washing is working well for me and I will use regular shampoo if I find I need to clarify. So far DevaCurl has proved worthy and it smells sooo good. Literally in love with the scent.

I love every Deva product I've used so far too...I keep experimenting with others but always go back to them. The DevaCare low poo and arc angel are awesome for me. I personally prefer the "care" scent over the "curl" scent. I just ordered One C and the mousse, so will see if I love them too!

I also prefer DevaCare No-Poo and One C over the DevaCurl versions. For me it's the difference in how the conditioners feel. I feel like DevaCURL just sits on top of my hair and if I don't rinse very well, my hair feels gunky. With the DevaCARE, it feels more like the conditioner is absorbed into my hair, so I have the option if not rinsing it all out (and find that this gives me fantastic results). There are very few conditioners that feel like that in my hair (although in fairness, it wasn't something I paid attention to or looked for in the height of my insane PJ days). One of the reasons that I really like the Regis Olive Oil is because I do get that feeling of my hair soaking up some of the conditioner. Today I left almost all of this conditioner in my hair and scrunched in some Ultra Defining Gel mixed with a bit of Curl Keeper. My hair isn't completely dry yet, but it definitely looks like it's going to be an awesome hair day. There tends o be a lot of Deva bashing on this site, but they do make some good products.

I also wanted to respond to the earlier post about silicones in the L'Oreal products. I was specifically referring to the cleansing conditioners, not the shampoos, not the regular conditioners, and I can say with absolute certainty that they are CG friendly. You can probably find a few threads on each of them if you do a search. If you were interested in other products, then I would suggest the EverSLEEK line, because that line is specifically designed as a silicone-free product line (with the exception of their latest product addition- an Argan oil). When I can, I like having less expensive options to rotate in to keep the hair budget down, especially since my thick hair requires a ton of product.

I haven't tried the DevaCare but I'll have to see if I like the scent. I will probably return to the DevaCurl every once in a while even if I find alternatives. I had used some DevaCurl products even before I new about the Curly Girl
Method so it just made me feel more comfortable to go along with the products once I started the method.. I have a few conditioners I want to give a try. I bought Yes to Carrots and I am going to use that right now because it's shower time. ^_^

have you started the CG method yet OhSunshine? I just started reading about it yesterday and today found some CG friendly conditioners....my old product is CG friendly already so going to start tomorrow! thought we could support each other, lol
    Just starting CG (04/18/13)
2C/3A hair, medium texture, normal porosity (I think!)
Trying out: Suave Naturals wild strawberry (co-wash) Garnier Fructis Pure and Clean fortifying conditioner, Redken crystal curls 6, Live Clean Argan Oil Treatment, Pantene curl shaping gel
Thinking of trying: Live Clean Argan oil conditioner or Live Clean Bali Oil conditioner....who recommends them?

Yes. I started it the day after I posted this thread and I love it! It's done wonders for my hair. I have plenty of products now. I'm trying not to turn into a junkie! Lol. What products are you using? What hair type and properties do you have?

I have 3a, short, medium porosity (I think, I have a hard time with this one), and normal density (again, I have a hard time distinguishing...). Either way, whatever I do with my hair works, lol. I have wanted to try the Pure Clean but I have accumulated so many conditioners that I can't buy anymore until I use up about two of them... And I don't use a lot of product daily because I do have such short hair... I co-wash everyday though because I find that I lose my curl by the second day and it's too short for protective hairstyles for now.
