Hi, I'm really new to this whole thing but I was wondering what some good products/techniques are that would make my curls more defined and curl at the roots. Also some products that would be good to use for the CG method? Thanks!

In order for people to help you, they need to know more about your hair. The best way to choose ingredients/products is by hair properties. Here's a link to help you with yours Live Curly Live Free - Home Once you determine your properties, look for people with hair like yours and see what they use (in signature.) It's the best place to start.

Your hair sounds a lot like mine, except I have good elasticity. It has really helped me to keep a hair journal and keep track of what works and what doesn't on my hair. I have been modified CG for a couple of years and mostly silicone free since last summer. My family thinks I'm crazy to have a hair journal, but it helped me figure out that I can't use glycerin and that I'm protein sensitive. That was a real turning point for me! Use the boards to ask questions and search old threads for more information, it will help.....

I also have really similar hair to yours: very fine, very dense, low porosity, loooow elasticity (snaps almost instantly!). It looks 2C, 3A on a good day.

Root curl happened almost instantly for me when I removed store-bought shampoo from my hair's "diet." I did a baking soda wash, washed with Chagrin Valley shampoo bar, and an ACV rinse on my first "hair detox" day (no conditioner, no combing, just air drying - it was an experiment) and while I had some frizz, I had mega root curl.

Now I only wash once per week and co-wash the rest of the time (products listed in my signature). The mousse I use and the Kinky Curly Curling Custard both work really well without weighing my hair down. I cannot emphasize enough how little KCCC I need to use; I touch the surface with two or three fingertips, rub that between my palms, and that's pretty much enough! That jar is going to last me a loooong time.

I also stopped plopping (the drying method) because it crushed my fine hair into weird shapes. I do a loose turban with a microfiber towel (some people don't like those) so gravity doesn't pull my curls down. The Pixiecurl blowdry method (links all over these forums) also helps, though I do it mainly from below so I don't get crazy ringlets on top.

    Hope this helps!

Ok! So im guessing products like the Chagrin Valley shampoo bar and the Kinky Curly Curling Custard and would be bought online? Or are they in regular/beauty supply stores? :)

KCCC was originally and online only product, but now you can buy it at Whole Foods and, I think, Target??? The CV bars are online. Read the ingredients carefully, my hair hated them because of the castor oil.

Yes, like KathyMack said, read the ingredients for each CV bar (www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com) - they are made with different base oils. My hair, for example, hates olive oil, so I avoided the bars made up of primarily olive oil. Mine loves coconut oil, and bars with that work well for me. KathyMack's hair hates castor, while other hair loves it.

CV gives samples for $2.70, and I actually haven't even used mine up yet after a month - so it's a good way to try a few out.

I got my KCCC at Target for $10.99.

I have 2 sample Chagrin Valley poo bars that I never used if you want them. After I ordered them, I found out that glycerin is a by product of the production process (thanks Kathymack!) and glycerin is a no-no for me. I have samples of the coconut poo bar and the chamomile & citrus poo bar. If you send me your address, I can pop them in the mail to you.
