Bunning Challenge

ProfessorPuffyProfessorPuffy Posts: 39Registered Users
I just recently cut my 3c hair and transitioned to going all natural. I'm trying to grow my hair about halfway down my back, right now I'm at about shoulder length ( halfway down my chest straightened). I've kept my hair up since I cut it because it's much too short for my likings to keep it down. I've been thinking about trying buns and I've heard about the bunning challenge and thought it might be nice to do it with some others in the same situation. We could post pictures and monthly measure the growth. Like a support group. It's difficult doing it alone and tempting to straighten, in my opinion. Anyone interested?

Do you plan to keep the challenge going until you get to mid back length? Just wondering, because I am interested in joining you.

I plan to keep it going until I get it long enough to leave down on its own. But, I might even go longer after that. What do you have in mind?

I'm good with no specific timelines. I dont really have a specific goal, I just have weird layers so I'm ready for a grow out challenge. Just to be clear no heat? I have been using a little but willing to eliminate it from my regimen.

I have weird layers too which is partly why I don't leave my hair down. I think no heat is appropriate. Maybe once a month at most to check growth?

I've not been doing anything to my hair lately, just washing and letting it air dry and then putting it up. I think it's helped but not sure. Very little heat, I don't style it curly much because I can't stand the length it's at, I have weird layers, and I want it long again so bad. But my hair grows very slow. I'd be up for checking in once a month or so but I don't know what else I can do to make it grow.

I feel you. Curly hair and layers is such a difficult thing. I want long hair more than anything. Once a month seems good to check in. Right now I'm taking biotin because I heard it helps with hair growth. Maybe you could try some. Hairfinity is supposed to give you a lot of growth but I don't know much about that. We should post up pictures of our initial growth so that we can visualize each other progress.

Sounds good! Next time I actually style it I will post a pic. I take a multi vitamin with 100% of the dosage of biotin but I have some biotin only pills I could start taking again.

I'll post a picture up the next time I style mine too. I basically just put it up currently, but still. I do it daily so I'll try to get it in soon to start the picture trend. (:

I'd like the join this challenge as well. My hair is shoulder length and about an inch from APL when stretched. Is there anything in particular besides bunning I should be doing for this challenge? I just noticed I have to use the LOCO method to retain moisture in my hair. I don't really style my hair outside of putting it in ponytails daily.

I just looked back at pics from last summer & I swear it looks the same as it does now. I don't know if that's really possible but that's what it feels like :-( my hair just doesn't grow. When I cut it 2 years ago I'd had it long for 7 yrs, I swear that's how long it took me to grow it, & I wanted a change. I knew then it grows slow & now I wish i hadn't cut it :-/

Also, mine really isn't long enough to do a true "bun" so I've been twisting into a claw clip or a ponytail w the ends tucked under, whatever protects my ends.

I've also been doing this challenge so I do not have to manipulate my hair as much. I plan to bun until the summer maybe a little past it.

Other protective styling would be appropriate as well if you like. Anything else you do would depend on your hair needs, for example, I deep condition once and week because my hair is a bit dry. Definitely no styling tools, though. Maybe once a month to check growth.

I look disgusting, but this is the best I've been able to get. It's more of just a pony tail since my hair isn't long enough for the full bun. As soon as I can, I'll definitely bun it. I might try to take one with better quality. Meanwhile, post up pictures of your buns or protective styles? (:

I don't have any protective style pics, but I have actually styled it the last 2 days. I did it curly yesterday and today I caved & straightened it. Ill post pics of both. Next time I put it up ill post those pics too. Here's where I'm kinda starting from. Ill post another length check pic in a month. Pardon me eating my bangs in the curly pic, I'd pulled them aside to fix them lol

I want in on this challenge. I can post a pic this weekend. My hair isn't even all around so it is hard to get pinned up. I need the practice (I don't know how to style my hair) and benefits of a protective style. I learned that my hair didn't retain as much length as it could have with almost a year in zillion fake out braids. I used them to grow out my pixie cut. The see in part grew wonderfully, the part that was individually braided not as much.

your signature tells me that your hair is fine/thin, but it doesn't look at all thin/fine on those pictures!
highlighted 3a hair. Fine strands, medium to high density. Probably high porosity. Growing uit bad layering and aiming for waist lenght!

trust me, it is. it's quite fine & my whole ponytail when my hair was BSL was barely 2". glad it doesn't look that thin tho!

Just wondering how everyone is progressing on the challenge! I dont have an update picture at the moment (been super busy with school and work) but I will try and take one soon. Id have to say my hair has come a loong way since starting the bunning. It was kind of challenging at first because I dont really care for my hair pulled back and my bun was so tiny. But with all the weeks of no heat and keeping my hair up i can definitely tell it is much fuller than when i started, my bun looks pretty decent but with shrinkage i cant really tell much of a difference on wet hair. I'm going to keep this up though!

Can someone explain to me the bun challenge ? My hair is shoulder length curly mid chest straight .. I have a mix between 3B and 3C .. Typical Biracial hair.. I'm also new to this site and not sure how to use it ! I'm getting my ends clipped Thursday and I'm going to attempt to not straighten my hair or use heat until it is mid-back!

You basically just keep your hair up and off your shoulders so usually in a bun or any updo or ps really
