Today's routine..so tiresome, so OCD, hand me the prozac...

MyrnaMyrna Posts: 2,363Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
So first I broke my rule that I was only going to change one thing at a time, because at that rate, I would have my routing pinned down in about two months, at which time the weather will be warm, and all the bets will be off again. So: shampooed with SM coconut hibiscus; conditioned with Yes to TOmatoes, rinsed it out and then used about a nickel size as a leave in, scrunched it in, blotted hair. Then: applied Tousle me Softly mousse (Yes, before the gel); then Biotera gel with a spritz or 2 of Aveda's Brilliant hair spray, for some crunch. See, I need some crunch to hold my curls, they are not defined enough without some crunch, plus I like the shine in the crunch. There is a cone in that spray, but it is pretty far down and really I use so little. Then I cliiped it up. Results: BIG hair, lots of volume (why? what created the volume? Not complaining AT ALL); curls are smaller and tighter than I prefer but overall a good hair day. So: I still dont know if I should be using a heavy or light conditioner; or if I can use a heavier conditioner like GVP, just use less.. oh this is all so tiresome...

Myrna, don't overthink it. You have great hair today. Isn't that enough? And I, for one, prefer tighter curls. Tighter curls = more definition for me. (At least when you're in the 3 zone.) So just do the same thing tomorrow and you'll tell by the way your hair feels when it's wet (is it rough and tangly? is it silky and slick?) whether or not you need more moisture. You're lucky because you do low poo everyday so you'll be able to keep better tabs on it. Once in a while I go three or even four days and then I go to wet my hair and it's like a snarly pile of hay and I'm all, "Oh, dear. I've let this go on too long and now I need to deep treat!" If it gets dryer then use the heavier rinseout. Or then experiment with maybe more leave in. But it seems like you've found a good combination of products right away which is very encouraging.

Well, Dusa, you know how it is, you've hit the nail on the head, we are curl junkies and product junkies - we think there is something better out there that will produce the best ever curls all the time, amen. Maybe I should start an on line group for "Recovering curl junkies" -except, as you see, I need recovery myself!
  • anonymous_133347anonymous_133347 Posts: 1,426Registered Users
I'd join that group! Now that I'm falling in love with FSG I'm wondering if I'll ever need to buy a finishing product again and what was going on with me that I went through so many. (B-5 design gel, KCCC, devacurl defining gel, argan ecostyler, aussie instant freeze, SM mousse, CJ pattern pusha, and all in the space of less than three months! Yikes!) I think I will still purchase KCCC though. . . out of loyalty. Also CJ Pattern Pusha is good if I want my hair to dry in 60 minutes flat. And I feel terrible writing it but I still kind of want to try Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic. I already have 2 HGs under my belt! What the hell is wrong with me? :confused5:

The first step is admitting we are powerless over our addiction, LOL. I have never used FSG; do you make your own, or purchase it? see now, your addiction has just triggered my addiction, we are really in bad shape..

Nope, its Curl Junkies anonymous, and there are hundreds of us who have to admit we are powerless over our addiction, that is the first step to recovery. But this site is like fine wine; there is always a better vintage out there!

I can't stop reading these boards and I check the swap board about 14 times a day or more, just in case there is a new product that catches my eye.

I am overwhelmed and don't know how to quit buying new products when I apparently have the best of the best already. Now I am trying to snatch up all of the drugstore goodies that everyone raves about. It's truly an addiction I need to stop.

The look on my husband's face every time I get a package in the mail says it all. Now it's the shopping bags full of Shea moisture and Aussie products.

Is the grass always going to be greener?

I think it pays, err, saves to make rules for yourself. I don't plan on buying any hair products this month but I do want to get myself a hair dryer with a big bowl diffuser so I can experiment with blowdrying my hair. I think if I were going on a trip I'd bring my KC products and my favorite co-wash, and maybe a low poo. That should cover it. Oh, wait and coconut oil for deep treating and jojoba oil for sealing. . . Yes, I see how this could get very complicated very quickly. Oh, well. At least the only makeup items I'd feel compelled to bring are mascara and lipstick so I guess I'm not a complete lost cause. :toothy10:

I am doing a biz trip in a couple of weeks and it will be myfirst one where I will do it curly. Ihave ALWAYS straightened my hair if I have do any sort of a presentation because I just never wanted totake the chance that 1) I will be having a bad hair day or 2) the audience willbe (silently) judgmental of my hair. Iam bringing my curly kinks stuff as that is pretty reliable for me but I will also be bringing my small barreled curlingiron in case I do get frizz head and need a quick and certain fix for my curls.

Yeah, at least I'm simple in every other aspect of my life. My knowledge about make-up is pathetic and my wardrobe is lame. Maybe I should start concentrating on other aspects of my life. I'm wasting too much time and money on my hair.

just to assist in your product junkie anxities :-)

these product companies really have their fingers on the pulse of we curlies...

From L'oreal to Creme of Nature, have you looked in walmart lately?

There are so many choices. and what is up with this organix company?

Why in the world do they have sooooo many options?

Thankfully, kudos to all the posters and teachers here, reading ingredients helps to dissect much of the addictive behaviours, LOL...

Once you get the ingredients down pat...you will notice the only thing that is different is the packaging and the amount of money available for cool advertisements.

That being said, remember these three rules and you will be fine:

*Never give companies too much credit [they are trying to make money not give you holy grail hair]

*A good ad will have you thinking cat poo is full of a rich mineral used by egyptians for silky soft hair [egyptians worshipped cats - get it]

*and when you finally find stuff you like, remember "that is what you work for..." to enjoy the free market of this great country!!!!

    Happy recoveries, LMAO. :sunny:

That much I knew (tho thanks for confirming!) - but I don't know how it will react to the water, etc! Though I guess we'll be moving from place to place quite a bit, so that's going to change rapidly. :/

Oh well. I'll work it out! Going to have to get adapters so I can use my hair dryer - lol!!!

Jas, I'd be more worried about being a different country chalk full of different curly products. Might do a little souvenir shopping. (For instance, my curly Brit friend Claire loves Boots Curl Creme. Might want to try that out.)

Haha, I'm good with eye makeup but often too lazy to wear it so yes, my knowledge of cosmetics is pretty minimal too. Eyes and lips. That's all I can do. And I need to go shopping for spring, too. I'm hoping now that I've discovered FSG I'll be spending more money on summer dresses and less on hair products.

I think the hair thing is a phase we'll grow out of. I started CG a little over 3 months ago and I may've managed to do a year's worth of experimentation in that time frame. I should feel guilty but I don't because it's fun! You can't deny it. And so far from my experimentation I know my hair likes minimal product (ironic, isn't it?) and dislikes hard hold gels. And wheat protein. And hops. And maybe glycerine. My hair is a fickle beast.

Lol!! At least this is a (relatively) harmless addiction! (Compared to some!)

I refuse to purchase any products over $10 (or at least much over) or that aren't available in store locally. It's the limit I've set upon myself.

I'm dying to try CK, and there are others that perk my interest, but luckily I've held back!

SM and BRHG are expensive as I'll go! Misty bc I'm afraid of falling in love with something I have to pay high prices and delivery fees for! Lol!

The question is: have our lives become unmanageable because of our addiction to hair products? do our lives revolve around our hair? Uh oh, we are in deep s-t! Then there is that little trick all addicts do...I limit my self to (take your pick of the amount of your addiction of choice)...yes I do that too, Jas, I limit myself to ONE expensive product of daily use...its bad...where is the serenity prayer when I need it?
