What is your biggest hair challenge that you have?

I'm new to this discussion forum, but I'm involved in the hair industry. I wanted to open up a quick discussion to get everyone to share a bit on their hair challenges and what everyone has tried doing in order to resolve them. I look forward to learning more about everyone.

Wow. Big question! All of these boards are full of our frustrations, experiments, successes and failures.

Finding the right products is a recurring theme. My hair responds really well to tons of protein but there are plenty others who get bad results with protein laden products. I like glycerin. Others like it in the summer but find it too drying during the cold, winter months. Still others can't use glycerin at all. My hair is fine and products that are rich in oils will weigh it down and make it feel dirty and gunky. Others love the moisturizing properties of oils and put it directly in their hair with great results.

Navigating the ingredients in products to find the right ones and avoid the ones that damage or cause issues while keeping track of the weather and dew points is a constant juggling act.

Yeah I agree that finding the right products can take some work. What products have you used before and what have been some of your results?

I've tried way too many products to list here but there are some that stand out. Deva products made my hair feel gummy. Kinky Curly products are too heavy for my hair and weigh my curls down. Even if I just use a tiny amount, my hair feels greasy and producty. No protein treatment I've ever tried has ever been as good, easy and cheap as the homemade recipe from IAGirl on these boards.

I love Tresemme Naturals conditioner. I'm currently having really good results with Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus shampoo. I'm also liking the Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus smoothie mixed with Aussie Instant Freeze gel.

    Welcome! :)

I'm with Mhen76, dew points are a constant challenge. I want frizz free curls, which I mostly manage, but when the dew point is very high or low, certain ingredients (like glycerin) can suck the moisture OUT of your hair.

Other challenges include finding the right products for your hair, finding new products once your favorites are discontinued, dry time (this is a big issue for me, I don't want to use heat but even with diffusing my hair takes looong to dry), over-conditioning (I have fine hair so I am prone to this), finding light weight stylers, getting enough protein (my fine hair can't get enough :)). Oh also the costs of everything... lol. I spend a lot on hair products.

I know this isn't normally a problem for most people, but my hair is DENSE. When straight, I can style it, no problem. When I let my natural curls loose, it's giant, and it's so thick I can't bobby pin it out of my face (they don't make them big enough or strong enough... perhaps you could make them?). I can't put it in a pony tail (same reason as above, but my hair isn't that long when it's curly. Shoulder-length at best) and I can't put a headband on (my hair just pushes the headband off, lol.). It's springy which is cool, but I have no versatility. I can't change my style when I want to, which is why I've been wearing my hair straight for so long.

Another problem is frizz. My curls are gorgeous (in my opinion haha) but the frizz makes my hair look like a nappy mess. I know this has to do with products and handling, but I can't seem to find anything that works. The ones that do make my hair crunchy-I hate that. Everything else has no effect or makes my curls even bigger (and more unmanageable).

Just for the record: I'm black and native american (75%B, 25%NA), my hair is 3C/4A, somewhat porous, and dense, as I've said. I don't have a problem with silicons or alcohol. I prefer alcohol, actually, as anything with a high water content tends to cause my hair to curl more then frizz up.

Honestly, I can live with the frizz if I just had some dang bobby pins!

Not sure if this qualifies as a challenge, but I do get frustrated that the hair products that I use are mostly available online or at a health food store that isn't very close to my house.

My challenge is the density of my hair. There's just so much of it, it's easy to get overwhelmed. I'm slowly learning to work with the thickness of my hair. I've been natural for a year now, but I'm still learning about it everyday.

+1 on dew points. The products I use have to be based on the weather forecast for the week. Otherwise my hair won't stay clumped and just frizz up.

I also agree with everyone who mentioned dew points. It's irritating to have to check this all the time and to have to tailor/avoid products to suit the weather!

Another challenge, and one that is probably fairly specific to my own hair, is inconsistency among my curl sizes. My hair is a mix of every freakin size of the 3s (and quite possibly some 2s and 4s as well). My dream would be to have a product, or technique (which didn't take hours; sorry skip-curling!), or (heat-minimal) tool, or method that would make my curls more uniform. I don't care what the curl type is! All I want is consistency! But I think this is probably impossible, so... yeah, dewpoints. That might actually be fixable! :D

+1 on having different curl patterns. My hairline is a mixture of 3c and 4a. Everything else is 3b! Wtfff. So annoying.
