Homemade FSG pros. . . a little help?

So last time I made homemade FSG I did 4 tbsp flax seed to 2 cups of water. Boiled, strained and it came out a tad runny. I liked it, but it wasn't enough like a gel, more like a serum. This time, well, I did it a bit differently. Same ratio of flax to water but I boiled it longer (at a lower temperature too) so that I could really see at least some gelly like matter on the spoon while I stirred. Then I strained, but I still thought it strained rather easily compared to what I was expecting. Nevertheless, I figured the gelly would thicken as it cooled. I also added a tsp of aloe vera gel and a tsp of Vitamin E oil to help preserve it. Then I stirred well and popped it in the fridge. I used the new batch today for the first time and oh boy is it viscous. It's not even a gelly, it's like a scene out of the movie "The Blob." I stick the spoon in and raise up and a lot of FSG comes up with it. It is pretty thick. Nevertheless, the pinch I did use today in my wet hair seems to be helping with definition a little more than the runny version did. (I use it after leave in, before my KCCC.)

So what's the ideal consistency of FSG? More runny? More thick? Did I underdo last time and overdo this time? Should I add anything else to it to thin it out or is it too late? Also, can I add anything to give it a nice smell? A, you know, more girly smell. Right now it kind of smells like an aloe leaf and not in a good way. Not that you can smell it after you've applied it to your hair but still. . .

Another question, how long does FSG last before you have to throw it out? I threw mine out just before 2 weeks last time. I hope the vitamin E and aloe will help preserve it but I'm not sure how much they help.

Also, the Vitamin E oil I used is from Trader Joe's and I noticed when looking at the back that the first ingredient listed is actually soybean oil, which irritates me. I guess I'll have to find a more pure version of Vitamin E oil from elsewhere. Maybe Whole Foods.

I've made fsg only twice...so I'm no expert.
The first time made it, it was so thin. The next time I made it, I boiled it for 7 minutes and its so thick. Super thick. I have to basically cut it with my fingers to get it out if the containers. At first I thought it was worse, that I should dump it and start over. But, I've come to realize it holds better. My hairs never been better. I need to add some protein though, any suggestions for that?

Have you tried a gelatin PT on your hair? You can add gelatin (pure protein) to FSG. I haven't tried it in FSG yet, but I love IAgirl's gelatin PT so I think I'm going to go for it in my next batch. Searching for "gelatin FSG" came up with a lot of results. Here's one: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/general-discussion-about-curly-hair/153123-experiment-new-fsg-great-results-so-far.html

I made two batches of FSG so far, so I'm no expert either. But I love how my second batch came out. This will sound really gross, but it's kind of the consistency of mucus... it looks liquidy at first, but it's deceptive. If I put a quarter sized amount onto my hand and pinch it with my fingers, I can pick the whole thing up in a booger-like glob... but it's magical in my hair! I keep it in a clear plastic condiment squeeze bottle (like Amazon.com: 12-oz. Squeeze Bottles 3 pk. - Clear: Home & Kitchen, but I bought one at a local kitchen store for cheaper) and it is really easy to use from there.

I wouldn't describe the consistency as a serum. Maybe it's between your two batches consistency-wise?

HoC, sounds like we're in the same boat when it comes to making FSG. But you're right. The second gunky version has better hold so I guess I'm doing all right. I kind of want to throw this out and make batch 3 later today and see what I come up with. . . Do you ever use the FSG to refresh second day curls? I know supposedly you can add it to the hair and the hair just drinks the nutrients it needs but I'm a little afraid to try. I just know it felt like too much I'd want to shower right away.

flippalicious, I'm afraid to add pure gelatin because I have coarse hair but it sounds like a good idea regarding HoC's query. If your hair loves protein, that is. The only thing with gelatin is, again, it doesn't smell so nice. Unless you add anything else to the "pack" I suppose. I'm thinking of putting a drop or two of my lavender into my next batch of FSG so I don't smell like an aloe plant.

So the consistency of mucus is what I was subconsciously going for. I wanted something that reminded me of KCCC because so far I haven't encountered anything that my hair loves more than that. I need a jelly. But I think what I came up with last night isn't that far off. It's just a little too thick compared to the KCCC maybe. But it did provide good definition. I could've used more but as always I tend to use a dime size of new things and ease my way into them. Not that FSG would probably make your hair feel hard or crispy from what I've read, but. . . just to be on the safe side. I like my hair to have movement. What has been your experience with FSG guys? Is it always soft in your hair? How much do you use for your particular length? I have medium long hair right now. BSL.

I have added gelatin and/or CNPF to my FSG!

Couple secrets I've come across with FSG - when in doubt, go thin. Take the seeds off the heat earlier and strain.

After I remove the seeds, I fill the pot with water, boil, and return the same seeds to make a 2nd batch. Then after straining I combine both batches and return to the heat to thicken them further.

You can also add corn starch. It can both thicken and add hold. "Dissolve" it in cold water first, then add it to your gel. (Start with a teaspoon or two - you can always add more.). If you want to add gelatin, now is the time, as well. Same method - mix with cold water first, then add. (And I'm talking small amounts of water, of course.)

Remove from the heat, let cool slightly, and add any oil, Epsom, CNPF, or anything else you like to add.

    HTH!!

Great advice! What's CNPF though? And do you add any essential oils to make it smell girlier? I want to add lavender to my next batch but am unsure how much.

I take it all back. Apparently this consistency is just right for my hair because it is fabuloussss! Later in the day when I felt inclined to experiment I put some, actually a lot once I saw how it was going in (maybe 2 tbsp for my whole head of hair) in dry second day hair and wow, oh wow, curls galore! It gave me so much extra definition and bounce. Also a slight but reassuring gel cast that was very easy to scrunch out twenty or thirty minutes later after I'd let it set. My hair is really soft and very curly right now. I think this bumps homemade FSG up to the HG status. (I know it's still early but I'm hopeful.) FSG is like KCCC's BFF. :love5:

    Colorful Neutral Protein Filler - it's a liquid protein treatment/additive. :)

I haven't added any fragrance, but then my condish scent always came through it so it never bothered me.

For the corn starch or the gelatin, I dissolve them in about equal parts water, or maybe a tiny bit more water.

If I used 2t of starch, I'd use probably 3-4t water. Gelatin I'd use 1T, and mix it with probably 2T water. I don't really measure the water, tho - just put enough to dissolve it and the I mix it into the FSG.

ETA: I add the starch or the gelatin to the already strained gel, but while it's back in the pot and over the heat. Both ingredients need to cook slightly.

I'm very porous actually. (I know, it's cray cray since I'm coarse.) My hair tends to absorb everything very quickly so it can be difficult to gauge how much to put. Too little? Too much? And I often can't tell right away so it usually takes me a while to gain confidence in a product. So I just put a little, I mean a teensy dab and my hair drank it right away and I saw more curl. So I just kept applying it evenly all around my hair and scrunched up. Then let it sit. For a moment there it looked as though things were going to crispy town but it was the same sort of soft, pliable gelcast I get with KCCC that typically unfurls on its own. So after a spell I scrunched out the mild crunch and bam! Super defined, shiny, and soft curls. It was Princess Dusa time! Two people told me my hair looked nice this afternoon and one was a very cute shopboy. As for the aloe/vitamin E/flaxseed concoction smell, it is really mild and neutral overall and disappears right away so I think I'm just overthinking it. It also didn't smell as strongly today as it did yesterday. Maybe my nose was acting funny. I'm still going to try a drop of lavender though. I wonder if it'd be crazy to put a drop of vanilla in too since I have some of that for baking. . . :chef:

Hmm... I may have to try this!!! Always looking for ways to refresh! I'm just afraid of messing up the clumps and causing frizz - that happens a lot when I "mess" with it. It seems for 2nd day hair I have to have good day 1 hair, it has to survive the night, and only need a little smoothing with oil as some gently twisting to reform a clump or two!

But if something as simple as FSG can refresh my hair... Hey! It's worth a shot, right??

    ;)

More info, please??? You put it on dry hair? Did you smooth it down and then scrunch? Did you get frizz?? Did the curls perk back up??

so I just smoothes it over the curls. some of my curls were straightened out since I had it "blobbed" just before. So I smoothed it over my more resistent curls (underside) and they are great. I added some water to my top straighter layers and it's crunchy now. no frizz. contrary actually.

I saw the properties changed! But I gave her the advice from live curly live free. At least her two properties agree with one another though. That's a few less stabs in the dark, eh?

Girls, girls, GIRLS! ! !-why didn't I listen to you sooner? I should've made FSG ages ago. And when the first batch was a bit runny I should've tossed it out and made the thick batch I did this past week. FSG is a miracle worker. I think I may like it even more than kinky curly. I am not lying. It is AMAZING. I did it again today. This morning I lightly misted my hair and finger combed out the tangles and messiness that happened while I slept. Then I went to fix breakfast. Then I reapplied the FSG to slightly damp, nearly dry hair and it was magic all over again. I had so much definition. And when I broke the gelly cast 20 minutes later it was super soft pretty hair again! Tonight was my wash night but I'm willing to bet if I hadn't exercised this evening and mussed everything up I might've gotten day 4 hair tomorrow using the same technique. FSG is so much more forgiving than KCCC. Don't get me wrong, I love that with KCCC a little goes a long way. But with FSG you can be generous and bring on the curlage without having to worry about product overload or OD'ing on moisture. And my hair was so soft when I washed it today. You know how you can tell if it's dry when it's wet? (That's when I reach for my Shea Moisture restorative conditioner to mix with my regular co-wash.) Well, it was pure silk. So I was able to reach for my Yucca Baobab conditioner instead. I suspect with FSG my hair will be moisturized well enough that I can experiment with a bit more protein more often. That may help my porous hair and perk up my curls. Oh my goodness, FSG is a dream come true! I now officially have hope that I will be able to maintain some 3A and even 3B curlage around the nape during the dry, dry summer. :D

You guys have inspired me....I have been making FSG since the summer and am intrigued by the addition of gelatin to the formulation. I made some and it is cooling as I type. BUT, I had a MAJOR mishap :(

I poured some into my plastic bottle, totally forgetting that it was too hot and low and behold, the bottle started deforming and tipped over spilling about half of it all over the counter :( I still have about 2-3 cups of gel left though. I can't wait to try it out! I may have to try it on dry hair like Dusa did.

UPDATE: Epic FAIL! It came out watery even after the gelatin!

I made my fsg last night and its like water, even with the gelatin. What the heck? It boiled a long time.

Here is me putting on my old plastics engineering cap:joker::

I think that boiling the gel too long or at too high a temperature after it is strained can break down the polysaccharides (polymers obtained from boiling the flaxseeds). This is my hypothesis because it was nice and goopy/thick before I started it boiling again. :study:I think the trick is to just keep it hot enough to mix in the add-ins, but not to actually boil it again. I am going to try again later.

UPDATE: My second batch came out awesome! Can't wait to try it out:headbang:

Must be right...^^^ it was gel before I put it back on the heat. However, I used it anyways today and its good! First time with gelatin in it...but my hair LOVES fsg. It's a go.

It's Okay Jas, but just out of curiosity...what you say thick, how thick do you mean? My usual way of making FSG, it comes out kinds like slightly thicker than CHS CK, but more mucous-like. This second attempt today was thicker initially but as soon as I mixed in the gelatin, it seemed to thin a little? That makes no sense. I would think it would have thickened it. Hmmmm...BUT i did try it (yes, I wet my hair down and applied it LOL) and got good results!

The simpler one... A little thicker than egg whites... Can't think of a good comparison. Syrup, maybe? But still egg whitey? Idk.

The complex one - it's more like jelly!

What is the complex recipe? I am hoping for a more jelly consistency. The one I made works great but spills out of my hand while I am applying it.
