Anyone else find it impossible to get volume?

All I want are big, poofy, frizz-free curls. But it seems no matter what I try, volume is not on my hair's agenda.

Like many Curlies, I suffer most from flat top. There are always curls everywhere on my head, but there is zero lift to those curls. I have well-defined 3b curls, but they always seem to lay flat against my head. Especially with my body type, I feel like more volume will maximize how my curls look on me. But nothing seems to work. I apparently epically fail at using clips, so I've almost ruled them out. Besides, even if I got lift up top, that doesn't solve the hair around my face.

Here is a photo example of my hair today.
ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1361688263.516392.jpg

The ends of my hair look like they have more volume than they do because they are sitting on my shoulders and scrunching up in the photo. Like I said, well defined curls. No oomph. I want oomph. Any suggestions?

By the way, I haven't gotten the hair analysis done yet, but my personal educated guess is that I have medium texture and normal porosity. If that helps determine what might work.

By looking at your picture, I'd hazard two guesses. First, and foremost, it looks like you are using a lot of product to obtain the frizz free curls. It's weighing your hair down. Do you scrunch out the crunch and try to free your curls from your scalp?? You can use your fingers from the underside to try to do some of that to help. The other thing that might help is a haircut with layers to lighten things up.

How do you dry your hair? I have to diffuse to get any volume.

I agree with both above posts, I struggle to get volume too and have to diffuse otherwise my hair is really quite flat. I also find that using fingers against the scalp as km suggests helps with gaining a bit of volume. I do it as I have quite thin hair and it helps to cover the scalp show-through - a bit more volume is a pleasant side-effect!

I find it impossible to get volume too! :crybaby:

The sad part is... I don't have a diffuser, so, i guess i need the layers that i am afraid to get.

    Medium porosity
    Low density
    Medium width

I kind of wish I could get my curls so flat to show length! I get flat top too, but it's still sort of poofy :S however, I also like lots of volume so I always loosen the roots with my fingers, so it ends up like this ImageUploadedByCurlTalk1361726162.683521.jpg

Get CHS roller jaw clamps and watch the youtube video. Also, you might try a mousse instead of a gel!

I'm going to keep experimenting with product to see what I can improve in that area. I did diffuse my hair in this video, but I did it in a way that caused frizz. I'll be doing a deep conditioning treatment overnight tonight and I'll use the pixie curl method for drying in the morning. I've always sucked at diffusing upside down, but I'll try again with the pixie curl method.

I used my finger tips near the scalp to try to get some more volume. I did notice a little difference, but not to the extent I wanted by any means. I also attempted to take my wide tough comb and comb lightly outward away from my head by about 3/4ths of an inch. Noticed a little difference again, but not much.

I also plan to try doing a more extreme side part so I have more lift up toward my bangs.

I did get a layered haircut about 4 months ago. I won't be going to see that stylist again just because it wasn't quite what I was looking for. He did alright, but even with styling he proofed but didn't define and I just felt like a frizzy mess. I'm not ready to go for a haircut again just yet, but I did find a couple DevaCurl stylists in my area that I will go to in the future.

I also do what Curly Carmen Curly does. I ruffle the roots when my hair is dry sometimes and that gives me good root volume. I have to be very careful not to ruffle too much though because I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I fear too much volume. Especially the kind that makes me look like I've stuck my fingers in an electrical socket. :male:

Curlygirl, please dont take this too hard, but your hair is not like CurlyCarmen's. Totally different curl and texture. I would like my hair to lool full like hers also but I dont have her hair, she has a much tighter curl pattern. We have to work with what we've got!
  • Curlygirl323Curlygirl323 Posts: 51Registered Users
I am aware it's different. That is obvious. I'm talking volume, though. In terms of where I would like it. Nobody's hair will be identical to the next. But "volume" means different things to different people. Maybe I should have been more specific. I just meant I want the volume mostly up top. I want wider hair :) I've seen it on girls with much looser curls than mine. I've seen it on most curl types and textures in some form. I have yet to figure it out with my hair.

I have the same issue and it doesn't help that my hair is bsl and heavy. I would love to have hair like curlyCarmen but like Myrna said her curl type and texture is different. I personally think volume all depends on hair properties such as curl type, strand width and density. My niece has around 3c/4a hair with fine strands/high density and she has lots of volume while my hair which is now 3a med/coarse strands doesn't. And she has long hair it just doesn't get weigh down she's so lucky lol. I think there is only so much volume we can attain naturally because of our properties. You can diffuse upside down and use mousse at the roots for extra volume but unless you get it professionally done won't ever look close to curlyCarmen. I've tried shaking gently at the crown but it didn't make much difference on my hair. I have noticed I have more volume on top after pineappling the night before. Also if your hair is all one length you might want to consider a haircut with layers. I'm starting to accept that my hair just doesn't have the nice crown volume and just try and make it look the best it can. I think you hair is very pretty and your curls so define and you should enjoy them. :)

I'm always trying to get volume. I recently found a new conditioner by accident (had to borrow some at a friends house) and it really gives my hair more volume. I noticed it the first time I used it at my friends house and I bought my own bottle that same day when I left. However, it does have 'cones. Lately I'm just using whatever works for my hair, CG or not. It's Tresemme 24 hour body conditioner.

Yeah, I know my hair can't look exactly like CurlyCarmen's. I don't have her genes! I guess I just meant getting *more* volume so my hair falls more out than in, if that makes sense. I think my best bet is to maybe go lighter on products and get better at diffusing my hair. I don't usually diffuse, I usually air dry. But I leave the house well before it's dry, do I can't touch it until later. My current cut is what I got when I asked for layers and didn't quite get what I want. I'm convincing myself more and more to schedule a hair appointment this week to see what can be done. I don't want to lose length, I just want volumizing layers :) I don't have split ends so I don't need a trim right now. I did find a Deva styling specialist in my area, so maybe I'll find out when she's available this week. Other than that, I'll keep experimenting :-)

I definitely got more volume pre-CG, but it was dry, straw-like volume that I don't want to go back to. My hair is physically capable, it's just stubborn :-(

Maybe doing a modified CG could help. I use a sulfate free shampoo with the tresemme conditioner. I also clarify and DT once a week. So, I try to keep some CG basics, but also use non CG products that work for me. I also got a layered haircut and that has really helped me with volume too

That makes perfect sense. I would love my hair to look on top more like the bottom which is where I tend to have all my volume. Definitely try diffusing upside down using the pixie method (I think thats what its called) and bringing the blowdryer closer to your scalp. Air drying can sometimes weigh down your curls. I recently had a devacut and didn't want to lose length either. I made sure I told the stylist and he was able to fix my ends, shape my hair with layers and still keep length. I did find this video, it says its for thin hair but you can always give it a try and see if it helps. It gave her a good amount of volume with no heat which is a plus.

I have recently been experimenting with ways to get root and crown volume with some success (repeatable). Here is what I do if I want volume:

    1. After smoothing on the RO, I use my wide tooth comb and comb my hair upside down. Then I flip back up and do the "baptism" rinse described in the Curly Girl Method. Then I take my comb or fingers and comb my top layers out straight away from my head. Then I flip back over and scrunch the condish in more. Lastly, I do a quick rinse upside down.

    2. Scrunch wet hair upside down and side to side with flour sack towel.

    3. Apply my FSG or Devacurl volizing mouse and scrunch scrunch scrunch upside down.

    4. Apply my harder hold gel . Then scrunch with flour sack towel again.

    5. Flip hair back up and back shaking it little side to side. At this point, I can feel the clumps standing up a bit from my head.

    6. Plop for 15-30 minutes.

This is the step that I just added that has helped the most:

    7. Diffuse using the pixie curl technique upside down and side to side. While doing a side, I also place the diffuser against the top side of my head, making sure that the hair is resting in a direction towards the top so the roots dry in a position where the hair is laying in the opposite direction it normally falls. Lastly, I partially flip my hair upside down so only the top layers in back are hanging upside down and place the diffuser against my scalp to dry the roots in the opposite direction.

Using this process I get similar results to using the CHS roller clamps without any curl disruption.

I posted something very similar in the 3b forum a few weeks ago... my hair looks very similar to yours. I can get volume by using products with glycerin, but then I get the frizzies along with the volume! If I just leave it alone, I get really nice spirals... but flat roots.

I've tried clipping, plopping, etc, but I have to choose only one: Either definition or volume. I can't seem to have both.

Today I got a little more volume (see pic). This was with minimal KCKT, CK and KCCC in my hair after a DT. I diffused upside down (forward, left side, right side x3), scrunched up my lack of crunch, fluffed my roots upside down and right side up. My hair had lots of frizz, as you can tell. Today I bought some DevaCurl No Poo so that I can ensure I get all product out of my hair in the future. Also, I'm getting my first Deva Cut tomorrow at 2pm, so hopefully I can optimize volume and learn some styling techniques that maybe I've overlooked or not done in quite the right fashion. These are my last two options, I'm afraid :(

I have noticed for myself that my hair doesn't like to be weighed down by many oils. I usually only use very light oils, but everytime I use Wild Growth Hair Oil, my hair just hates my guts and looks greasy. I only use 5 drops!!

I've noticed more Volume on my roots now that I've been using SM Yucca line.
