Hair looks messy with DevaCurl

I've been using the DevaCurl products for 2 weeks now and have mixed feelings. While I see some benefits, I find that my curls are wonky, messy and all over the place.
I use No Poo and One Condition, then flip my hair to put in the Firm Hold or Light Hold gel. When I flip my hair over it gets very messy at the roots and doesn't fall nicely when it dries. Also, I find that in the back the hair is almost straight, whereas at the sides or in the front I have nice curls.
I think flipping is where the problems start, but I don't know how to apply the product and get a nice curl without doing that. Does anyone else get really messy roots/curls because of flipping over to apply products?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

I think flipping is your issue as well. I'm going thru the SAME THING. Sometimes I will get better curl and lift at the crown when I flip and sometimes I just don't. I use either deva curl or ouidad products - switch back and forth. Lately when flipping, I have been getting flatter in the back and I have thin hair so it's just ugly. What I haven't tried yet and I'm going to next time is to lay on the bed with my head hanging off the side and trying to diffuse that way. That ought to be a sight! But when I have my hair done at the salon, they have me lean back in the chair while they diffuse and I never get flat so maybe that's the trick??
