Help! I have dry hair.

I have been sealing with coconut oil and sleep on a silk pillowcase but I wake up with dry hair? I use apple cider vinegar to wash my hair and I just did a bentonite clay treatment. I did a protein treatment a few weeks ago and my hair is still dry. What is the issue?

I would try sealing with another oil. Coconut oil has great benefits, one of them being that it penetrates the hair shaft and protects keratin BUT...it penetrates. So it leaves the outer shaft and enters the cortex...so nothing is sealing in the moisture anymore, and it evaporates. I dislike oils (I seal with creams) but maybe try jojoba? Sunflower is a good coating oil...play around with non-penetrating oils and see which you prefer. You can still use your coconut oil for pre-pooing (if you prepoo) or try putting it in a spray bottle and spritzing it on dry hair. I've read of some people liking it on wet hair, others on dry.

Also, what do you mix the bentonite with? Make sure you mix it with the ACV or apply it to your hair after the bentonite, which has a high pH and can leave your cuticles wide open causing friction, frizz and dryness.

And I'm assuming your hair is fine? Make sure you know your hair properties before adding regular protein treatments to your regimen.

Do you think it could be a porosity issue? I agree with the poster above, but I also think you may need to determine your porosity. Low porous hair needs different care that high porous.

I personally try to make sure that I'm properly moisturize in wash day because that will determine my moisture levels throughout the week.

I DC, cowash, use a reg conditioner to detangle (rinse a little more than half of that out and then seal that conditioner in with a conditioner rinse -- an ounce of conditioner and 6 ounces of water) and then use a leave in and seal that in with and oil. I know it sounds like a lot, but my hair is low porous and it's hard to penetrate the hair shaft.
    Holy Grails:
Cowash: DevaCurl No Poo or As I Am Coconut Wash
    Conditioner: Giovanni Tea Tree Tingle
    Leave-in: Paul Mitchell the Conditioner
Styling Products: EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel
Oils: Coconut oil. Carol's Daughter Hair Balm.
Deep Conditioner: Shea Moisture African Black Soap Purification Masque (also a great detangler and cleanser)

This happened to me before. The coconut oil gave my hair toooo much protein!! So I use it sparingly now. It also depends on the seasons when using certain types of oils.

I also use bentonite clay in place of shampoo. I mix mine with aloe Vera juice. I use to mix it with acv but found it to be too drying for my hair and skin.
