Trying to get Back Into a Reading Routine

SmilingElephantSmilingElephant Posts: 666Registered Users
I used to LOVE to read as a kid, but now as an adult i have a hard time focusing.

However i have these cravings every so often to get cozy with a good book.

My aim is to read at least 5-10 books this year. I kinda feel like starting with a book ive read already from last year just to jumpstart my little challenge.

Anybody with me?

Im planning on going to the library on Saturday...anything interesting?

    Yay for you!

I keep an Excel spreadsheet of books I want to read, books I've read, books I've bought (cheap on my iPad!), and books I have requested from the library.

I also have a tee-shirt that reads, "I was born with a book list I'll never finish". :)

I've been a reader my whole life. I can't even imagine a life without reading. I read literary fiction, trashy romances, books about witches and vampire and the occasional werewolf, and fiction and non-fiction about WWI and WWII. I'm in a doctoral program and my dissertation is on Lincoln's leadership style so I also read and read and read about Lincoln.

I read at least one hour a day. I get in bed when my husband goes to bed (he gets up at 3:30 a.m. so he's in bed by 9:00) and read until 10:00 or 10:30. I also catch the occasional read during the day at work (don't tell on me!), and of course in the evenings if I'm not distracted by homework or TV.

What kinds of books do you like to read? I'm happy to share titles with you if you're interested. I'll even share titles of the embarrassing mystical/magical romance books I read on my iPad!

In love mystery and thriller books. I now mostly do books on CD during my one hour each way commute to work. I find myself looking forward to my time spent driving. I like:
    Phillips margolin
    James Patterson
    Michael Connelly
    Jeffrey deaver
    David Baldacci
    Dan Brown
    Sandra Brown

I also read and loved all of Harry Potter books but I am usually not into magical, science fiction type books.

    Yay!!!

Im not really sure what i like to read. I know i enjoy fiction and historical fiction.

Im personally not a fan of vampires and witch type of things but i do like some fantasy.

I recently have read The Help and 32 Candles. My imagination is too vivid for horror so i stay away from those kinds.

I like books that change your life and take u to a happy place. :)

I'm a reader, and found that getting a Nook was a nice way to shake things up. It's fun to get the immediate gratification of downloading a book (I'm strictly
library) and be reading it within five minutes, all without leaving the house.

Sites like Slate and Daily Beast and the NYT all have "Best of" lists. Plus the
writer Joe Queenan just wrote a book about his own love of reading, and there are lots of suggestions within it.

    HTH, and good for you!

Claudine, I meant to mention those sites too - those are places I go for recommendations. I also use BookBub (BookBub: Free and Bargain Kindle Books, Nook Books, and more) - cheap to free e-books.

    One of my favorites! Enjoy!

There was a poster in my classroom in fifth grade. It said, "Open a book and fall in" - I've never forgotten that and I still feel that way. :love7:

So i went to the library today and got:

-Honor Thyself by Danielle Steel, one of my fave authors.

-Daughter of the Stars by Phyllis A. Whitney

I plan on finishing each book in a week. I have until the 23rd to return them.

Idk if this question should be another thread but....how do you go about choosing books? And how long do you usually take to finish a book?

I have a short attention span so it usually takes me a while.

It completely depends on how much time I have or how engaged I am. Sometimes I finish a book in a day, sometimes three days, sometimes I just wander away and never quite get back to it (though I lie to myself that "I might, I just might").

I find books lots of ways. I read a lot of book/reading blogs, I read the New York Times book reviews, I look at BookBrowse.com, I look at Amazon, I ask friends, etc. I even sometimes go back to my own list of books to read! :toothy10:

I don't spend a lot of time trying to get into a book; if I'm not pretty engrossed within the first 50-100 pages, I walk away. Life's too short to read a book I'm not enjoying.

I don't really have time to read. The book im trying to read right now im struggling through it. At the same time my attention span.....doesn't exist.

Its so frustrating. But i really want to read at least 10 books this year. Im a slow reader. If i read faster, i don't understand what im reading, I've tried.

I wouldn't worry about your speed or the number of books you read in a year. Try to establish a time when you're comfortable reading, like before bed or at lunch --- whenever.

It's a habit, like any other. Don't pressure yourself, and don't worry if it takes you a little while to get into it. Sometimes it's good to start with books of stories, instead.

This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz. It's a collection of short stories so it might be easier to read through.

Sooo...i completely got sidetracked by work and forgot about my reading goal this year.

I have not finished a SINGLE book this year! That's a first! I still have A Tree Grows in Brooklyn in my Nook...im gonna try to finish it. I usually finish at least two books every year!

    (-___-) shame. Lol
