A-cone experiments

Jas76Jas76 Posts: 2,283Registered Users
Since so many of us are experimenting with some cones, I thought I'd post my experiences in a separate thread. (Rather than spread across 3 threads that I'd be hijacking. Lol!). Feel free to share your own experiences here, as well!

So, here we go.

1st attempt.
I decided to keep my "coning" to only one cone at a time. I chose a-cone bc it doesn't build up, and it targets damage. I'm not super damaged, but my hair is porous, long, and does have some damage and breakage at the ends.

I had a treatment condish with a-cone, so just decided to start with that. (It's actually a post-color treatment left over from fall of 2011 when I decided to chunk the under layer of my hair darker with Demi-perm color. No one even noticed. Lol)

I low-pooed, conditioned with GFTN (old version) so I could detangle, then applied the color treat condish.

I rinsed it half out, then went about my usual routine, except I air dried instead of diffusing.

I had a lot of frizz and flyaways, but that may be bc I air dried and my hair got "bumped around" before the gel cast could really set.

Hair looked healthier, I must admit. Shiny, of course. Felt a little dry on the ends, but that's probably not bc of the cone.

Attempt 2
Low-pooed with SMR (likely wot remove the cone), detangled with Tresemme nats, a little SM masque on the ends, then the color treat over that. Left some of it in again, then did my routine as usual.

I didn't clump my hair as well in the shower, but again I think that was technique not necessarily the coney product.

Curls were nice again, but the top got frizzy (where it was clipped), and it got droopy (especially in front) and a little frizzy - BUT! The dews were SO hi here yesterday. It was like swimming through the air around here. We had near record highs, humidity, and storms. So my hair was very confused anyhow, haha! And even though it had dried completely, my hair felt damp all day bc of those high dews.

Unfortunately it seems I can't get a good measure yet again.

So I can't tell if the condish is just too heavy and is OC'ing me since technique/weather are factoring in. (Could be that condish itself is too heavy, and the cone is not the issue, too.)

I'm going to try again with this one and see how it goes tomorrow. If it doesn't go well again I'll probably pick up a different a-cone only condish - perhaps HEHH, or the new GFTN? Idk.

So I'll report back in the next couple days after attempt #3!

I've been messing around with a single silicone containing product myself for the past week or so!

The silicone containing product: Tigi Curls Rock amplifier (Target 2-pack option. Has different packaging than normal, not sure if different formula)

'cone in question: Cyclomethicone link to article on it Cyclomethicones: A Different Category of Silicones

Application: I followed the product directions the first time, using 2 pumps. 1 pump was smoothed over all my hair, the second pump i scrunched into. All this was on soaking wet hair.

I finished with a handful of Herbal essence mousse (lv 3, CG)

Result: Tons of shine! Soft managale hair! Very Little Frizz! Curls looked rope-y and less bouncy, though i am over do for a cut.

2nd Day hair: hair def looked heavy and weighed down. but it was still incredibly soft and it pulled back into a twist kinda nice, though it started looking a touch greasy.

I kept generally that same applicaiton process tweaking amounts here and there. Been using a low-poo Bed Head Foxy Curls shampoo to cleanse build up as needed.

Currently have it with 1 pump curls rock, 3 handfuls mousse worked into hair, and then plopped. Got way more curl and bouce, but humidity rolled in here so I can't tell if frizz is from process or weather.
    Hair Type: 3A, low porosity.
    Co-wash
: Deva No-poo, weekly: Lush Squeaky Green shampoo bar.
Condish:Rotating, constant- Deva One Condish, current- Say Yes to Cuc
    DT: GVP Conditioning Balm
Styling: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine oil, sealed with DEP lv 10 gel.

I'm a total product junkie and LOVE trying new products every time!

I love Curls Rock Amplifier. Because it evaporates I don't even really think of it as a regular silicone.
I've been modified CG for a while, so I've been using occasional cones. I've also tried experimenting a much as possible to see what my hair will and will not tolerate. Either I have no idea how to tell, or my hair is generally pretty agreeable. I've had some bad luck with silicone conditioners, but I'm trying a-cone again because I'm reading posts from so many people who are doing well with it.

Okay, I'll play. :-). I've been experimenting with Suave Captivating Curls mousse (dimethicone).

1st attempt - had just done a DT with CJ Curl Rehab. (Note: my hair is medium coarse, low elasticity, normal porosity - or was, at least, when I had my hair analyzed 2 years ago.) Rinsed out the DT, applied my LI (CJAO), then raked in 4 golfball sized squirts of mousse. Flipped over, raked my hair downward, scrunched in KCCC. Plopped, diffused a few minutes, then air dried until about 90% dry. Had to SOTC before 100% dry because we were going somewhere. Had pretty good results - hair was curlier than with any other product I've tried - even the normally wavy bits had spirals. Hair was soft, didn't feel coated or icky at all. Frizz was minimal at first, but increased later on. I was thinking that might have been because of the premature SOTC.

Next morning hair was good enough to wear all the way down again - usually on day 2 I have to pull back the front (where my hair is normally less curly anyway and gets flattened overnight to boot). I was very happy with my experiment at this point. Third day I pulled it into a high bun.

2nd attempt - today I washed with CJ shampoo and used CJAO as a RO and LI. I used less LI this time and topped the KCCC with a pea of BRHG to keep frizz at bay. However, something went wrong. It started out great, but canopy frizz was approaching unacceptable level as the day wore ons. I'm thinking it could be that I used less LI or because it was very rainy today (my hair, no matter how healthy, poofs into a giant ball in high humidity).

Tomorrow I will likely do my normal 2nd day routine, which is to run wet hands over clumps of hair to reactivate stylers and then scrunch to reform curls, then pull back the front with a barrette or bobby pins.

I am undecided as to what to try next with the mousse - use no LI? Try more or less mousse? I am beginning to feel like my styling technique is the reason I always, always have canopy frizz, but I'm not sure how to switch that up.

I will continue to play with this product until it's used up, and if I can't find a good combo or method to avoid the canopy frizz, I'll reluctantly try something else. (I say reluctantly because the curl I get with this mousse is so great that its almost worth the frizz.)

Are you typically able to use mousse? I've found in recent years (the CG years) that mousses seem too light and not enough hold. Maybe I need to apply them on less wet hair, idk.

But I tend to get some drooping and some frizz with mousse. Of course I haven't tried that many of them. Maybe I just don't have the right one yet!

People rave about that mousse, and the Clairol 3 in 1 mousse. KUP on how things go!!

Other than a disastrous encounter with HETT mousse when I first started CG, I haven't used any mousses until now. I decided to try again now that I'm a little smarter about hair care in general exactly because they're lighter than gel. My curls are not very strong, especially in the front of my hair, meaning that it takes very little to pull them out or flatten them. With gel, I thought maybe my hair was unable to curl up as much as it could because of the weight and because my curl pattern is not strong enough to overcome the gel cast as its forming. I dunno, maybe that makes no sense. But it seems I can either get no frizz with less curl, or some frizz with more curl. I can't find the sweet spot in products or technique that will let me have no frizz and more curl. Such a conundrum!

Anyhow, next wash day I will use my usual amount of LI and a different application method for my KCCC - I think scrunching product in is where my frizz comes from. We'll see what happens, and I will definitely update!

I am glad you started this thread Jas!! I wanna play too:
Hair properties: Dense, medium texture, normal porosity and elasticity. Curl pattern is 3A with some 2C and random spirals/ringlets in certain areas. Length pulls out the curl somewhat. I live in high dews/high humidity.
My 'cone of choice is bis-aminopropyl dimethicone in HE Hello Hydration.
Day one I used SM shampoo, and HH as RO. I didn't love the slip, and my hair was hard to detangle. I lost a bit of hair. I decided not to style it, pulled it into a bun and when it dried, it was in some sweet waves, shiny and soft. I could tell for sure my hair was "coated" with something because of how smooth it was.
Day 2, cowashed with YTC, SM something or another as a RO. Scrunched in about a quarter of HH and the same amount of LOOB, then topped off with gel. Plop, diffused: awesome hair. It lasted through a weekend of dancing, a few workouts and me constantly touching it to see if it was true. After 5 days it was still cute enough to pull into a pony but my head was itching :(
Next attempt I used the same routine as above but after clarifying, PT and DT. First day was perfect, second I had a little frizz. This was probably because of all the extra stuff I did to it. Nobody else noticed the "frizz" so maybe I was over reacting.
Aaand today I went and got a hair cut! I have just washed and styled my hair with the same routine as above except I added a tiny sprinkle of epsom salt to the HH. I know it's midnight but I am flying to Hong Kong in a few hours and I wanted to see how the cut turned out. 'Cause maybe I got to pack my flat iron, lol. Anyway I am super excited to see the results, my hair is still drying but if it is decent I will share some pics :D

Wow! So basically you are using it as a LI/sealer? That's kinda what I'm doing, too.

So you are doing ok with just co-washing? I guess since both our cones don't build up, that is likely ok. I'm still going with my usual routine of co-washing, SM low poo, and Organix low poo as needed (coco bet.) - all on different days, of course!! Lol! Just going with what my hair "wants" on any given day. I'm still very early on in my experiments, but so far no issues with build up, etc.

I seem a little TOO soft, though, so more experimenting is clearly needed!

Keep 'em coming, guys! This is interesting!!

Interesting Corrina, my hair tends to be "agreeable" as well, sometimes the strangest things make it happy. I once washed with my boyfriend's Head and Shoulders ('cone filled horror) after spending a day at the beach... my hair looked beautiful. I was expecting disaster but curls, they do what they want lol

I rotate the cowash with SM mostly, and L'oreal Eversleek cleansing co. How do you like Organix 'poo? My hair went a little haywire after clarifying with Giovanni TTT, and since the bottle is almost out maybe I'll get something else. I am loving the HH as a leave-in especially since I *never* could use one with the ridiculous FL humidity. I was recommended to try KCKT but I am too cheap, lol. So I went with no leave-in all these months, just gel and some LOOB if I was feeling fancy. I didn't know what I was missing!!!!

Omg, Marci! Your curls are BEAUTIFUL!!! Serious hair envy, here!! I've always wanted dark hair with those type of curls.

LI is a necessity for me! I think I might pick up a bottle of the new GFTN. I hear it just has a-cone, and the old one worked so well for me, I might as well give it a shot.

Ok, here's my attempt 3 report:

Today I low pooed with a keratin poo (has coco betaine, tho I'm not sure that that factors in here). Then I used a CG RO, followed by my a-cone condish. I just used a small amount, combed it through, and rinsed it probably 50-75% out.

I did everything else just as I normally would (not that the shower routine was all that different, actually).

Results: good! Curls formed well, little to no frizz at the end of the night, clumps have stayed clumpy... All in all I'd call it a good hair day. Yes, I've had better, but I'm happy with the results! And the OC'd issue wasn't there, no frizz problems, no drooping... I think the weather was a factor before, and too much of a heavy condish, and needed more protein.

So I'll keep going on this path for a bit, so a couple CG days in there to compare and contrast, and see how things progress!

    Slight update -

So I woke up to 2nd day hair today! But... By mid day there was some frizz, and it was REALLY dry. Even now it looks ok, (passable, at least), but it feels like hay! :/

I don't think the cone is drying me out, but I'm wondering if my sealers are rendered less effective by the coating?

    Thoughts?

Think I will DT tomorrow. Might even try low-pooing out the cones and trying it CG for a few days to compare and contrast.

Idk... I'd have to rewet and detangle tomorrow, for sure. Going for 3rd day is not an option. WAY too dry and tangly.

Are you saying you use a coney condish on dry hair to refresh for 3rd day hair?

I could go a few more days, but I thought I might take one "wash cycle" off from the cone to see if I see immediate differences, then try it again.

I must admit bc of my schedule I have not tried cowashing a day while using this cone. I've done low-poo, one with coco-betaine that would remove the cone, and one that theoretically would not remove it. The latter my hair did fine with, even with the cone in there. Not sure how a co-wash would go.

I'm more concerned about the moisture issue. Is it unrelated? Is it the cone keeping moisture out? (I don't think that's it.). Is the cone making my sealer less effective? I just don't know. :/

^^^ I do not cowash, I soak my hair, condition, then reapply my LI. This is my daily routine until wash day, (day 5 or 7). I believe water/moisture is permeating the hair, (and small molecule proteins as well), despite the cones...however, I agree the cone may just be disrupting the butter or oil sealer. What may be happening, is the oil/butter sealer is prohibited from absorbing/adsorbing into the hair and causes the barrier that prohibits water/moisture intake. I find I have to be real careful adding oil to my coney leave ins. It works better for me if I add some oil to dry hair, later that day; this way, when I re-wet, the oil is forced into my hair during my shower allowing for better cone dispersion for more coverage on day 2/3 hair.

Whew! I'm not sure I'm understanding myself now! Ha! What are ur thoughts?

Hmm... I'm not 100% sure I follow you, either! Lol!

I just don't know. I sometimes wonder if that cone layer keeps the oil from making a good seal.

When I found that MO was an HG for me - retained moisture, helped my nape tangles and general tangles, etc - I was having a lot of better hair days. Could get 2nd day hair far more often than before. Now, just in this week or so of using a-cone, I find those tangle reverting, and that my hair is drying out as the day progresses, much like before I started sealing with MO.

So it makes me wonder if the cone interferes with the sealing.

I'm doing and over-night DT, and tomorrow I'm going to low-poo out the cone and see if a couple days of CG make a difference. Then I'll try the cone again and see how that goes.

Perhaps the cone would work better in higher dews? I was thinking I'd heard people say the opposite, but I could be wrong. (Plus even if the opposite is true for them - doesn't mean it would be for me!)

Maybe I'll give your route a try, too. Low-poo, then coney condish, then just RO the next days.

But do you rinse and condish every day?? I must be honest, I don't always have time to do that. :/

I rinse and condish every day. But I alternate wearing my hair down with pulling it back into a single low braid (this is my faux protective style) and it saves me the time and hassle of air-drying, styling or diffusing on days when I don't have time..

Let me know how ur hair feels after switching back to cg to get some moisture back? Also, u may want to try a lighter oil with ur coney leave in OR a different coney leave in with ur mineral oil sealer, (maybe HETT ;) )

Hmm... What would be the advantage of a lighter oil with it?

I have some Aussie Hair Insurance LI spray that has a-cone, perhaps I could try that? Idk.

Today I'm going CG. Of course I did an overnight DT, so my hair is going to be more moisturized anyhow. We'll see if it stays that way, tho.

    Stupid porous hair. :/

I'll try the AHI later this week to see if I have any better results or different results. I'm definitely curious to see how the sealing compares!

^^^ I'm thinking:lighter oil, better cone dispersion, less buildup, more moisture getting in...? But, this may not be the case?

Oh I have no clue. Lol! My hair is better today, after an overnight DT, a low-poo and CG day.

I'm interested to see how it does tomorrow, moisture-wise. Then in a few days (probably next week) I'll try a-cone again and see if there's any difference.

It would be my luck that with all my "oh, cones aren't evil! Use them in moderation and you're fine! Blah blah blah", I'd be the one who has a problem with them - lol!!

:) I feel u completely. I was so impressed with HETT, I was sure the "none of your frizziness" was a go...then I used it...dry hair one day in...it's in the trash. I will also give HETT another shot next week. Cones, cones, cones:(

Lol! I mean, my routine was working before... Why do we feel the need to mess with it when it works?? Ha!

I guess I was/am intrigued by the way a-cone works. Seems plausible that I would have better hair?

Maybe I would if I were rewetting and conditioning every day. ?

But like I said, I'll continue the experiments!

    Does HETT have a-cone?

^^^ HETT has bisaminopropyl dimethicone, in the second half of ingredients. I'm glad I tried it after the ingredient change (lavender variety became the jeweled orchid variety), its soooo luxurious!

But I've been afraid to try it again, cuz I've been having really good hair days without it! Sorta having a love affair with KCKT and EVOO:)

Oh Condish only - wish I could do that!! You are so lucky!!

Yeah, I think I've given up on the cone experiment. :/

I might try again in the summer when we have higher dews.
