Sealing troubles?

DepressedCurlsDepressedCurls Posts: 836Registered Users
So I've always know sealing was key to retaining length and keeping hair moisturized...and I've always tried it with no success. I've used many different oils and they all gave me undefined stringy frizzy curls. I don't even use a lot. Maybe just a dime or smaller. And I'll scrunch it in after my leave in. I've even mixed it with my leave in and still got the same results. I finally found an oil that actually made my hair feel like it sealed in the moisture, it's a mix of coconut, argan, sweet almond, jojoba and two others i can't remember. It's 6 light oils. But i still get the same stringy and frizzy effect and my curls aren't as spiraled clumped and defined. I want healthy hair but i also want my hair to look nice...and this sealing just isn't making it look it's best. And I've tried butters, they're too heavy and give the same outcome.. :/

And if you can tell, it's stringy here and frizzy although it didn't pick up a lot of the frizz.

You don't give your hair properties, which would help people give you information. Here's a link to help you with that Live Curly Live Free - Curly Hair Basics

My fine/low porosity hair doesn't care for straight oil/butter, but likes them in well formulated products. I use a richer product that takes a long time for my hair to absorb--it essentially seals in the moisture.

The last week has been cold and dry in the mid Atlantic states. I've been using minute amounts of DTs as my leave in to help with moisture and sealing. That way, the uber dry air doesn't suck the moisture from my hair.

You could try it. I bought a few of the SM products--didn't care for them. Thought they were "heavy" rather then "rich," if you understand the distinction. They weighed my hair down, even in minute amounts.

Other than curl pattern, I have the same hair properties as you. For some reason, my hair hates argan oil for sealing, it's great for oil treatments and as an ingredient, but it seems to be the one oil that will guarantee dull, stringy hair for me if used for sealing. So far I've had the greatest luck with coconut oil (as an ingredient, not straight up because it freezes) and sweet almond oil.

Same here. I tried that dt as a dt awhile back and didn't like it. Just like the smoothie and other leave in milks. I feel the Same about most of them.

I may just use sweet almond oil...idk. Maybe it my technique as well. I know oil alone causes this but also running the products through may cause it as well.

I literally use 4-5 drops of grapeseed oil (very very light), in every quarter size dollop of LI to seal. This seems to work:) I transfer my GSO from the 16 oz bottle to a travel size flip top and let it drip drop into my hand to mix...hope this helps?

Someone recently posted which oils are best for sealing and GSO and jojoba were listed, while argan was a treatment oil and not a sealing oil.

For me, any leave-in or styler that is butter based works as a sealer.

The very first two oils i tried sealing with were jojoba and gso...it was a no go. This 6 in 1 is the best so far. It's just frizzier and I'm loosing volume. :/ normally my hair is like...bam. Big, root curl, all that but this weighs it down a little or something..not sure. My hair is also a lot longer now as i said...i think it's a mix of all of these factors.

The only thing i can think is adding the oil and i stopped using hairspray cause it was making my hair tangled and dry. And I'm not putting products in while soaking wet anymore..I've been letting it dry some. So like really damp..

I find that if I use more than a single drop, I get stringiness. (I have baby-fine lo-po 3b curls.) But one drop, on top of a moisture cream on sopping wet hair, followed by a styling cream, works pretty good for me. Maybe two drops. :) I use the Jessicurl hair oil -- I like the Island Fantasy scent! It's very light and nice.

Hmm, i literally used two tiny drops and still...it did that. Maybe my hair is over conditioned and its adding to the undefined and soft frizzy mess

Would coconut oil count? Cause that's what i did for an hour then tried it and...nothing. It's not dry yet so idk but from the looks, it's gonna be the same. Maybe sealing just ain't for everybody!

I would think that a coconut oil treatment, while super yum, would moisturize more than give protein. Get a good protein condish (I LERVE the Spiral Solutions one; CJ makes one people love, too -- and I know there are tons that are less $$$), treat it, then moisturize and try sealing. That could totally be the issue.

Coconut milk would b a better option for a PT. But I'd pick up a VO5 for a good shot of protein. Either "silky experiences" or "herbal escapes" would do?

I don't know how you feel about flaxseed gel. But I add just a little bit of oil to my flaxseed gel. But I have to be careful not to add to much or it makes my hair frizz.
