curlywhocurlywho Posts: 119Registered Users
My hair is crazy dry, and I think it is because all the products I own have alcohol as one of the main ingredients.... Does anyone have any suggestions?

    They're in my signature

Also, I prefer products I can get at Sally's, Walgreens, or Walmart, but I can order online if necessary.

What kind of alcohol? Ceatryl (spelling?) alcohol is a moisturizer. Alcohol denat. is a drying alcohol, as is SD Alcohol. List the alcohols in the products and we can tell you if they're an issue, but looking at your signature (assuming it's accurate), I don't see any problem products off the top of my head.

Hmm. It's the c one. So, I guess that isn't the problem. Bummer. I don't know what's wrong now.

Try more moisture. Less protein. Do a few DTs and see what happens.

Alright, thanks! I bought some GCP conditioning balm and Megasilk moisturizing treatment. Here's to hoping this works.

I also often get "bendy" pieces in my hair instead of curls - could that also be caused by a protein excess? ** I feel that I should clarify, these are actual awkward pieces that bend at an odd angle, not just waves

Bendy pieces could even be kinks in your hair. Some wavies have kinky strands. I know I have some. I also have some really coarse kinky strands that totally do not match the rest of my texture. You'll know if you have a protein overload - hair will feel like straw, really rough and dry, won't curl as much as usual. Dryness can also come from buildup. Do you low poo or clarify ever? Are you sure you're not using any 'cones? If cone buildup is the case it could be blocking out any moisture you're trying to feed it.

I don't think they're kinks, because they DO curl or wave nicely on good hair days, but I could be wrong about that. I clarified recently, and I've triple checked for any cones. I low-poo generally once or twice a week. I'm beginning to think it probably is protein overload since the bottom feels really dry and straw-like.

Thanks you for helping me troubleshoot. I'm lost on my own, even though I've been at this a year. I feel like every time I get a routine down my hair's properties change drastically.

I noticed in your signature that your hair takes forever to dry but it's high porosity, though your hair is thick, so it is entirely possible. It just seemed odd to me, so I thought I'd mention.

How well does your hair get wet? My hair really doesn't wet easily, so I'm thinking my porosity might be more low than medium...

Porosity just isn't one of those easy things to figure out...

Hmm. It doesn't have a problem getting wet at all. It takes so long to dry because it holds water like crazy

I, too, noticed the forever to dry. What do you consider forever?? If it holds on to water, that's a sign of low porosity hair.

When I was younger, my hair was dense. Before I came onto nc.com and learned to use product/technique, I towel dried, diffused and let it air dry the rest of the way. Five hours later, it would still be damp.

Can't advise you about products, my hair prefers the more natural products from the online, boutique type companies.

"Forever" - shoulder length hair, ~40 minutes non-stop (diffused) blow dry and still about 20% damp..... And with that sentence I realize why my hair is so dry, I'm blow drying it to death!
Stylists always comment on how much it holds water.

So, the added moisture just made my hair limp and less curly, though I can tell that my hair was less dry today. Could this be just until my hair adjusts to more moisture

** sorry, I just realized my sig says high porosity. Apparently I got confused, I meant low.
