Looking for products to shrink my curls... Not stretch

My curls are stretched out as it is. Can anyone recommend a hair gel and deep conditioner to help make my curls springy? I've been using As I Am products which I really like for their ingredients, but I want some things to shrink my curls and not elongate them more than they are already.

I know anything with protein makes my curls tighter and shrink more while moisture based products relax and stretch my curls.

I can't say I know any specific gels or conditioners that encourage shrinkage, but I do know a couple of techniques that cause my hair to shrink more.

First, applying products to my hair when it is not soaking wet. If I apply products to soaking hair, my curls elongate, but if I apply products to just damp hair, it shrinks up. I believe this is because the products are not sealing as much water into the hair, so the hair is lighter.

Second, plopping. The longer I plop, the more shrinkage I get. I'm assuming this is because the having the hair piled on top of the head means that its weight is not pulling the curls down.

I agree with CurlieCutie that protein can increase shrinkage for some people. This is a great idea for a thread and I hope others chime in with condish/products recs!

I second protein! Nothing shrinks my curls like a gelatin PT!

I do apply gel on soaking wet hair, but then I use a MF towel to scrunch out the excess water, and re-apply some gel to the ends.

Then I plop. I'll use a flour sack, or if I need to speed drying time further I'll use a MF towel.

I've never plopped before but I'm gonna buy a flour sack thing and try it. Also, by coincidence I put my usual products in my hair today after drying it more than usual, and also tossing it around and scrunching the products in and letting my hair finish drying more messy than usual (hard to explain, but just played with hair a bit and separated hair so it wouldn't dry all in one piece so to speak) and I have more volume now. So u may be right about applying products in semi dried hair. I can't wait to try plopping it!

Also I combed my hair upside down, which made the crown hair "messier" and gave it more volume :)

Along with volume I think the freedom my strands got from scrunching helped them curl individually

Good tip. I hadn't thought of that and I apply product when my hair is dripping wet, then once some of the water is out the curl is much tighter but I don't reapply since I've already applied product. This may help though!

Does anyone apply product before & after scrunching and/or plopping?

    Yes, I do!

I do LI, seal, then some gel on very wet hair. Then scrunch it with a MF towel. Then I reapply some gel focussing mainly on the ends.

After plopping, I sometimes will use a spray gel and gently scrunch with the towel a couple times.

I have to start with very wet hair to establish some clumping and keep frizz and springiness at bay. But I have to then scrunch water and weight out of those clumps to keep the curls from stretching. (And have to add a little gel back in to my then damp hair before plopping.)

So I guess I sort of do BOTH things.

I usually squeeze out most of the water in my hair with a microfiber towel, then apply my products, then plop with another (dry) microfiber towel for awhile. Then, I let the plop down and wait for my hair to be about half-way dry (I don't diffuse, but only because I'm lazy). Finally, once the hair is half dry, I almost always apply some KCCC. So, yes, I for one do apply products before and after plopping. This works great for me when I want my curls to be tighter.

The Smasters method does something like this along with diffusing, and a lot of people swear by her method. There's a thread on the Smasters method around here somewhere... I think it's part of the "techniques" sticky?

I just recently experimented with using brown flax seeds instead of golden to make my flaxseed gel. I got significantly more shrinkage and tighter looking curls with the gel made from them than anything I have ever used.

I use Kinky curly custard on soaking wet hair...i separate my hair into 2 sections. Run product through with my fingers. scrunch with hands, scrunch all over and side to side...then plop for 5 mins...diffuse till almost dry. Springy bouncy curls. I also use Curl Keeper on days i don't use Curly custard. (kccc)

I usually don't plop since my hair airdrys relatively quickly but I've been inspired by this tip since I agree with everything else you wrote. Gonna try plopping then the next time I wash and go. Maybe get another one of those rare 3B days.

For those that apply product after scrunching/plopping/drying how do you get clumping?

My curl was great, but not as clumpy as I prefer it.

I have to get clump action before scrunching/plopping/drying, and I imagine that's how most do it. It's really difficult to make your hair clump nicely after it's already mostly dry.

Can you explain how how you do that? My hair has always naturally clumped provided I apply product to it when very wet. Almost too clumpy actually.

I'm thinking to experiment with a leave in, then plop, then add gel?

I've searched high & low on these boards for things that cause shrinkage but the threads are usually wanting less shrinkage. (I may have even started a thread asking but I'm not sure)

For super bouncy curls I scrunch product in when my hair is fairly wet, but not completely soaking. I've really been liking AG recoil mixed with curl keeper (literally mixed, not layered). You can adjust the amount of recoil based on how much hold/enhancement you want.

Missbanjo - hope it works for you! I've found to maintain any shrinkage I need that hold! And with how watered the product gets, and the fact that I scrunch a lot out, I need to put some back! Lol!

Product-wise, shrinkage comes from protein, a small amount of mag sulfate, and SM's curling soufflé has worked wonders! FSG works, too.

But I need hold! Protein, moisture, and hold! Lol!

I ordered recoil and curl keeper this morning, we'll see how well the work with shrinkage on my weirdo hair. If I don't touch my hair much I get loose coils on bottom (right side more than left for some reason) and more of a wavy canopy. If I use a lot of movement drying and diffusing, I get that "beachy wave" look that people seem to like but all I see is "awwww my curls are gone!"
