Netflix or Amazon Prime?

PoochiePoochie Posts: 293Registered Users
So I got rid of cable several months ago. I do have a Roku, so I'm trying to decide if I'd rather have Netflix Streaming, or take advantage of the instant videos on Amazon Prime. The annual cost seems to be about the same.

I have a trial Amazon Prime membership now, mostly because I got hooked on "Downton Abbey" and wanted to watch all of seasons 1 and 2 before last Sunday. (That was FUN.) So I've noticed that for many TV shows and movies you have to buy them before you watch, which I don't think is the case on Netflix. However, you can buy (around $2) current episodes of series as soon as they air... I don't know if Netflix has a feature like that?

So which do you have? Which do you prefer? If you have both, how do they compare? Thanks for any advice!

I'm am curious about this too. I just got a roku a few weeks ago, and did the Netflix free trial. I've used it nearly every day, so now I'm thinking about Amazon prime..the Netflix trial is for a month so you can try it out.

If the cost is the same, I'd do Amazon Prime because you get more with your membership. The streaming titles look to be the same but you also get free two-day shipping and free kindle books. Plus, the rentals seem fairly cheap.

Netflix has more movies, and mostly older TV shows. The company is slow to update it's streaming catalog and titles can disappear because Netflix's right to stream the video can run out.

That said, Netflix is signing tons of deals with TV companies to get more TV shows, faster. It's definitely more costly than Amazon Prime, but Amazon has less movies and TV shows last time I checked. Both have iPad apps, but you can stream Netflix from more devices.

    Thanks for the replies!

As I figure it, netflix is $16 a year more ($7.99 a month for streaming only, amazon is $80/year). I think I might like access to the more recent TV shows, but at a couple of dollars an episode that would add up.

    Still cheaper than cable, though.

We do Netflix and Hulu every month and then buy episodes from Amazon when we want. It's still way less than the cable we were paying for.

I have Netflix Streaming only. (No movies thru the mail bc I don't like to wait.)

I find it a bit limited in terms of titles. But it's OK.

Never heard of the Amazon service.

LOL you're right, I reevaluated my life after I said that.

I have both, but I cancel netflix like every other month because there is nothing to watch and then I'll see something I want to watch and pay for it again.

I only use netflix because it's on my wii so I can watch it on my tv, if I had an xbox I would cancel it because xbox's have amazon prime now..OR no, maybe it's playstations. I don't know. I only have a wii, if the wii has amazon video and I don't know about it, I will cancel it again.

    *off to look*

I have until the end of the month to decide, but I am really leaning toward Amazon... I think the deciding factor is the "TV Pass" where you can download new episodes as soon as they air. That way I can pick a couple of current tv shows to follow if I want. (OK not fooling anyone... can't miss Downton Abbey)

How can we find out what shows are eligible for the tv pass? Is it part of the prime membership or an add on?

the new wii console, wii U has amazon prime, in case anyone wants to know. and xbox and playstation.

Hmph. Maybe I should upgrade my wii, or get an xbox, but I like the wii for the baby-ish games i can play, if I ever decide to play a game, because I am a baby.

If you go to amazon.com and search for the show, it will show you the options. With the prime membership, the tv pass is $1.89 I think and then you will automatically purchase new episodes. Also if I search thru my Roku I am offered options to buy. I am really new to this and haven't even bought anything yet, so maybe some more experienced users could chime in.
