Am I a 4a?

Hi

It's always been hard for me to tell what type of curls I have.
My hair is texturized right now and kind of strange because some strands are more straight than curly due to being overdone. (I don't texturize anymore)

I think I am maybe a 4a or a 4b. What do you think?

Looks like a 4 a. My take on 4a is that if you can achieve curls with a wash and go and without doing twists etc, and if your curls are no smaller than eraser top of a pencil, you are 4a. If the curls on your first picture came about by just washing and finger/combing hair with gel etc, then I say 4a

I'm curious about your texturizer. Not that I want one but I want to be better educated. When was your last one? How often did you retouch? How exactly is it you overprocessed your hair to make it so (for lack of better words) messed up. I thought part of the point was to loosen to get wash and go hair but how can you wash and go with straight pieces? I have seen people post on boards that this can happen but it is my first time seeing a photo of a texturizer gone wrong. I was in a salon recently because I had business with the owner and I overheard a stylist telling a woman a texturing wouldn't do anything but soften her hair like it was so benign and no big deal.

4a. I have heard that texturizers are weak perms, so that's probably why some of your curls loosened. hope this helps .

My last texturizer was in January 2011. I retouched about 2 times a year, maybe 3. I've had my hair texturized since grade 10! I've also had about 3 hair dressers.

The texturizer does loosen your curls, and I guess the longer you leave it in, the straighter it is. I think that one hairdresser used to leave it in longer in the front so that when I straightened it it would be straighter.

I alternate between wearing it straight and curly. I mean I still wear it curly but it's annoying some parts are straight. I suppose I could cut off the straight parts...

SMH someone told my sis the same thing and she went ahead and got one! She told me she is still natural b/c the stylist said all it does is make your hair more manageable. The length people would go to make money its a shame. Lucky for my sis i was able to baby her hair so she didnt experience any breakage. I trimmed and little by little She was able to get back to all natural. I blame my sis cus she should have known better but some people dont and these professionals lie to make money ...tisk tisk tisk. I research everything b4 making any decision.

Thanks for info. To be honest I think your hair would way look a lot better curly if you cut or stop doing wash and gos and did twist or braid outs while you transition.

It depends on you and how eager you are to be all natural. I'm not sure how much new growth you have but by the looks of it the texturized section that curls can still blend well with your natural hair in a wash and go. But the straight hair isn't going to curl without manipulation. I don't know if just cutting the straight pieces might make your hair very uneven. Some people mind uneven hair some don't. I don't mind but I never straighten so people can't see my hair isn't perfectly even. But since you wear straight it may be very noticeable. Roller sets are another option if you want to grow it out and slowly cut without applying a lot of heat.

I get it done in a salon with a flat iron. I keep my hair straight for one or two months, then I got curly for about 3 months.
