Product Question

HI everyone.. I need some product recommendations for my teenager with naturally curly hair. She uses a TON of mousse daily and ends up with a stiff "helmet head." If left alone, she ends up with a huge frizzy head - so I understand her panic, but she is starting to get made fun of because of the "crunchy hair."

Anyone? I will try and attach a picture - maybe that will help..

Her use of mousse may be causing this problem. Mousses tend to provide only light hold, and so a person needs to use a ton of it in order to get any kind of control, leading to the dreaded "crunchy head." Additionally, many mousses contain drying alcohols, which could make the problem even worse.

I would suggest that your daughter try a strong gel instead, so that she can use much less of the product and get the same control she wants. Try LA Looks Sports Gel, or Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (don't be afraid of the "rock hard" in the name, it will not result in helmet-head). Apply the gel in sections to all parts of the hair when it is wet, and then don't touch the hair until it dries completely. The hair will be hard at this point. Then, scrunch the hair in firm motions until the hair is no longer hard. Let us know if this works! :)

I'm a mousse user, can't use gel at all, but I only use a small amount, a little goes a long way for me. I use a leave-in conditioner followed by CJ's CIAB (I have a couple of other similar products but they're Australian) then I finish off with the mousse. The CIAB keeps the frizz at bay and gives some curl definition so I don't need so much in the way of hold and only use a small amount of mousse. Might be something else to try.

Now's a great time for her to learn about her hair--and how to take good care of it. While the Curly Girl book has a little information and a great DVD to show her how to handle her hair, the e-book on livecurlylive free website would give her all of the information in one place Live Curly Live Free - the e-Book

She can learn a ton by "hanging out" and reading on nc.com. Plus, there are other teenagers on her that can give her insight in "dealing" with her classmates.
