I got an ipad mini!

JosephineJosephine Posts: 14,175Registered Users
So excited, kind of wanted one but would've never bought one for myself. My employer(just started working for them in March) gave all the employees a mini at the christmas party or for employees over 2 years old - a macbook air!! 13" i5

Last year I heard they got the kindle and the year before the first gen iPads.

The only downfall is that its wifi only. Debating if I should sell it or not and upgrade. Right now, I'm thinking most likely not.

    That's awesome!

My iPad is first gen and it's wifi only. It works fine for me - I always have my iPhone with me, so I use it to check email or whatever if I'm away from wifi. I primarily use my iPad for reading anyway, so that's always available wifi or no.

Nice! My mom bought herself an iPad Mini for her birthday... She loves it, so far! It seems like the perfect size, in my opinion.

She bought a data package for hers, but it sounds like she has access WiFi often enough that she's barely using the data anyway. So, you might be okay... I guess it just depends on how often you have WiFi access!

Can you use your phone as a hotspot? If so, I wouldn't upgrade. I had the original iPad which was wifi only and just tethered it to my phone and used it everywhere. I sinced passed it on to my child and have an iPad 2. Deep down, I kind of want a mini, especially because I broke my screen (although my iPad is still totally usable) but it would be wasteful for me to get one. I do love new technology!

I totally agree with Sariroo. If you can use your phone as a hotspot, I wouldn t upgrade either. I ve had 3 Ipads, all of them with the 3G. I never bought the cellular sim for any of them. I wish I had paid for the Wifi only.

Your employer is very generous! I m very happy for you.

Thanks everyone. This is my first post from the mini. I can use my iPhone as a hotspot but I think I have to pay extra.

Do you have Verizon? All the share plans include hotspot. I only have 1GB, but I've used it with my MBP and have never gone over my limit. Granted, I don't use hotspot very much, as the iPhone is much faster.

Personally, I'd stick with Wifi only.

Maria, I didn't know that there was an option to use the iPad without a data plan. That's good to know.

    Wow! Enjoy that.

I think I would just about drop to my knees if someone gave me a mini :)

    That's awesome.

My boss has been getting a lot of x-mas gifts and when he doesn't want something, he sometimes passes it over to me. So far, I have a cheese grater, a potato peeler and two ebony candle holders.

Sadly, he's kept the champagne bottles.

Okay so, when the iPad first came out, I said so what, it's a big iphone? And then I heard about the mini and thought that was even worse because its smaller but still not small enough to put in your pocket. I guess depending on the size of bag you carry, a mini could be more beneficial but most likely not and you are sacrificing screen size.

So I played around with the mini and still feel the same way. I still have to kinda squint to read. Still not keyboard so to type emails or responses on here is hunt and peck like my iphone. At least it's a little faster because the keys are bigger so i dont have to go back and correct as much.

The only benefit I see is if I travel, its bigger to look up stuff than my iphone and much lighter than a laptop that i would normally not carry. Other than that..eh.

What do you guys use it for? I'm thinking of giving it to my dad if I don't get too excited about it in the next month. He's been really wanting one and I know he'd use it to read a lot. I guess I could use it for that, I am studying..

I don't know how it works in the US. Here, you buy an Ipad at Bestbuy, Macstore, Office Depot, etc. and then you go to the cell company to buy a sim (pre-paid or post-paid).

I've never had an ipad attached to a data plan. I use wifi or bluetooth to connect to my phone and use my phone's unlimited data plan. I always have unlimited data on my phone. I pretty much use my iPad for internet browsing, some apps, and I love using it to read books, and stream music or video. I also use it to control my Apple tv. I rarely use a computer anymore unless I'm working with something my iPad cannot do (files for my embroidery machine or something else).

I use mine in place of my laptop if I'm just surfing the web. I do a lot of online shopping on it - hello, Amazon! I check my email on it.

Other than that, I read a lot on it. I get digital subscriptions to Texas Monthly, Vogue, and Vanity Fair and read those. I check out books from the library and of course I buy a few books from Amazon.

Like you, I had no idea why I would ever use an iPad...then I got one. :) It's actually my husband's hand-me-down when he got a new one, and I love it.

I got my iPad 2 at the Apple store. I got the 3G model and had a choice between Verizon and AT&T. It came with the SIM card in it.

Medussa, you aren't require to get a data plan to use it even if you get a 3G model. It can be used with WiFi only. If you do choose to turn on the 3G it is month to month and can be turned off at any time.

Josephine, I almost never use my laptop anymore since getting my iPad a little over a year ago. Almost everything I would do on my laptop I can do on my iPad--browsing the web, checking email, watching movies, reading, listening to music, creating and editing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, playing games, etc. I have no trouble typing on the touchscreen. I also have an iPhone that I can use for most of the same things. I use my phone more than my iPad for listening to music and audio books and taking quick pictures (the camera on my iPad is pretty crappy). For the most part, the only things I use my laptop for now are Photoshop, printing, and the few websites that can't be used at all without Flash (and there aren't many of those left).

I dont know, for resumes, cover letters, long emails and long posts here, I can't imagine not needing my laptop. For quick browsing I use my iphone anyways, the ipad is just the iphone with a bigger screen. If I really wanna get comfy I still need to use my laptop. Especially if I'm searching hard, using my keyboard a lot, or having to go between multiple tabs, its still not as easy to switch from one tab/app to the next on an ipad as it is with a keyboard and mouse.

I think if I read more often the ipad will have a better use for me. I am a little disappointed though at the resolution on the ipad. It's not very clear at all.

yea, the ipad mini has terrible reviews from tech savy people lol.

I mean I would of thought they would of gave it retina display if they're gonna release it along side the new ipad with retina display, but they didn't. I heard someone say Steve jobs would be pissed (or rolling in his grave) if he knew they released it like they did, it's like they released it solely for money not because it's a mini and has awesome features. I'll still take it if you don't want it. ;)

Generous employer! We get a box of chocolates. I've been off this week, I bet when I go back on Xmas Eve even they'll all have disappeared.

Just chiming in to say your employer is so nice! I would never expect something like that from my workplace -- though I'd really appreciate if they'd update our old computers. I work for a tech news magazine and you'd think we'd have the latest computers and operating systems, but no dice.

Also, congrats on the iPad. I have the iPad 2, which is fine, but I much prefer my Nexus 7 (Google and Asus' 7 inch tablet, it's running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean).

I have the Wi-Fi version, but they just launched a 4G option, and you can get a pay-as-you-go service from AT&T. I believe if you have T-Mobile as a carrier, you can also sign up for a data plan for the tablet. Just my two cents in case you want to sell the Mini for something else, as the Nexus 7 32GB is $299.

Which tech sites are you looking at? On this one, the mini is rated #1:

I'm trying to find a less expensive alternative to the iPad. We want to do away with the two very slow, monstrous desktops we have (those towers take up so much space). I'm still researching.

It's not a terrible tablet but for an APPLE product, it's crap. Especially for the price you pay, compared to the brand new ones with high quality retina display you might as well pay the 100 or 50 dollars more.
