Flat Ironing Question

mia12mia12 Posts: 46Registered Users
I'm thinking about flat ironing my hair today or tomorrow. The only issue is that I don't use a shampoo to wash it. I use cleansing conditioners instead. I was using CJ Daily Fix, but lately I've been using loreal's everecreme cleanser, and I really like it. I know that everyone says that it's important to have clean hair before using heat. Do you think I will be okay using the evercreme before flat ironing? Or if that's not enough, what about the daily fix since it has cocamidopropyl betaine in it? I'll use shampoo if I have to; I'm just trying to avoid it.

I'm not certain but I would guess that you might need something a bit stronger than that but....if you're set on using that cleanser then I would do a clarifying rinse with ACV and let it sit on for a while. Just massage your scalp and make sure its saturates your strands.

If your hair feels squeaky clean, that's what you want. If not, then you might have to actually get a sulfate shampoo.
Good luck and tell us what you decided to do

OP I think the shampoo you use depends on what is in your hair prior to washing. If you have heavy build up that would need to be removed, you may want to opt for a clarifying shampoo when preparing to flat iron.

But remember to follow up with as much moisture as possible in your deep conditioner to make sure your hair avoids heat damage and will be easily flat ironed.

Here is my hair flat ironed just recently. There is also a video tutorial HERE.

Fantastic & Napp, thank you both for responding! I decided to go ahead and stick to my usual cleansers. I used daily fix and then flowed up with a deep conditioner. My hair came out almost the same as when I used to shampoo. It feels a little softer, but not by much. After this experience I think it is okay to use cleansing conditioners before flat ironing, especially if you’re like me and you don’t really use heavy products. Now that my flat ironing technique has changed, I think I will shampoo next time to see if the results are any different. Thanks again for your help!

I remember seeing your original flat iron video a few years ago! I started experimenting with pre-pooing after watching it. I didn't know you had a blog though! Now I have something new to add to my feed :).
My flat iron routine is almost exactly like yours, except that I chase the flat iron with a straightening brush instead of a comb. However, I have yet to get the results that you do. My hair gets straight, but it lacks movement. I really don't know what the problem is. Maybe I'm still not getting enough moisture, or perhaps my hair just wont do that. I don't flat iron often, so it's not a huge deal, but I'm not willing to give up yet!

I straighten no more than twice a year. Are you using any products during the flat iron process? Typically when I use products after my hair has been blow dried I experience hair the is more stiff.

After deep conditioning I typically only use Nioxin when I'm blow drying and no product there after.

I also have flat ironing issues. I think it takes a while to get it down. I have no issue with moment. I just get wavy/poffy hair instead of straight hair. But then again I don't like to blow dry soooo.

Yeah, that might be it. I blow dry with tresemme's heat tamer spray because I can't find the nioxin anywhere. Then, before flat ironing, I add the one 'n only argon oil treatment. Next time I might try it without the argon oil. So, just to make sure I got it right, you just use the nioxin alone, no leave in or anything else?

Nope. Nothing else. Nioxin is actually a leave-in, detangler & heat protectant in one. You can find it on amazon HERE
