Can I get some advice on coloring my hair?

I'm planning to color my hair red in the very near future. I've been recommended to use L'Oreal HiColor in red, as it is a hi-lift color that can give a vibrant red to dark hair.

I haven't colored my hair in about a year and a half, and I'm starting to see some grey! EEEEK!

Any tips on pre- and post-coloring treatments to minimize damage to my hair?? I'm told I should use a 30-40 volume developer to acheive the color I am looking for.

I appreciate any advice!

I plan to put sun in in my hair. It brings out your natural highlight. Last time i did it i loved it! I got a honey golden brown look i got compliments all the time! I want to wait to try it b/c its still cold but will prob do this towards the summer time

What did you do with the sun in??? I just want my hair a little lighter since its blk/dark brown naturally right now I have it dyed but I'm trying to go natural so I want to stay away from dyes. So I'm interested to find a way to make it lighter.

Okay so its a spray that brings out your natural highlights. All you do get the spray and pritz it on your hair the sun or heat from the sun will lighten it. You can control how light it gets depending on how many times you do this. Also blow drying is another way to get it light without the sun. I will wait until it gets hot to do it since i dont use blow dryers

Coconut oil on your hair and scalp the night before u color will help. Don't wash it out. It will help with the protein loss you get from dying.

Or you can buy a protein filler if you didn't want to use the oil.

You are definitely going to destroy your hair with a 30volume developer.
What color are your hair?
You can use henna and indigo to cover you grey hair

Okay, before we start assuming 30v will destroy her hair, more info on the condition of her hair, her starting color, and maybe a pic the red she is trying to achieve. She may not need a 30v, but let's not Wtf the woman.

Didnt have complaints when i was relaxed and colored dont see why i would have an issue now that my hair is the healthiest its ever been

I've used 30 volume developer. Plus bleach. My hair is doing just fine. No split ends, breaks or whatever.

I agree with the coconut oil pre-treatment. It really does seem to be protective, to some extent, without interfering with dye uptake. More on that here.
Let it absorb for a few hours. It's best if you clarify before applying the coconut oil, so it can penetrate the hair shaft properly.

Well like I said, we need to have more info on her hair.
I agree with the above poster. I recently bleached w/a 30v developer and dyed it and i have had no issues.
