growing length instead of width

I am new so please bear with me here. I wasn't exactly sure how to post my question(s) yet, so here goes :-|. My hair type is 3b I think. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to grow length instead of width. My hair is layered but grows wide more than it does long. It looks like a tree. Also, does some people's hair stop growing at only a certain length when other people's hair can grow much longer? Thanks for any suggestions!

Most people with our curl pattern (or tighter) have hair that tends to grow "wide". As the hair get longer, it will get heavier and pull the curl down, making it appear longer. What this means is there will be an "awkward phase" where your hair insists on being wide, but one it's at a certain length is will appear longer. If you want your hair look longer instead of wider, you'll need to grow it out with patience! Also, consider a haircut with long layers. DO NOT get short layers (say, shorter than chin unstretched) because otherwise it will make your hair puff out (unweighted, remember?) and look wide.
