What do you tell your stylist before a cut?

I have an appt Monday at a salon that specializes in cutting curlies. I'm growing out a short, stacked cut...so my hair is some whacked out shapes right now! That obviously has to be fixed.

I want to make sure I get the most out of this cut. In general, what instructions/questions do you communicate to your stylist before a cut to make sure you get what you want?

I am very unskilled at letting stylists know what I want!!

If you say something like please fix up the shape, that gives them license to pretty much do whatever they interpret to be fixing the shape. I have said that before if I trust the hairdresser, but if you do not know them do NOT say that. They will pretty much always take off more than what you would have wanted. You could say I'm trying to grow my hair out so please don't cut more than a half inch off any strand and hope for the best.
