dumb comments people have made about your appearance (not hair)

curlypearlcurlypearl Posts: 11,970Registered Users Curl Neophyte
I have very dark lips (pale skin). Many people have admired this because I they say I don't need lipstick but one cosmetic sales associate announced the following:

"You must have had a serious infection when you were a kid. The blood didn't reach your brain and pooled in your lips."

I thought it was pretty funny.

Your turn :laughing6:

I am Italian and do look Mediterranean. I have darker pigmented skin around my eyes, and I have bags under my eyes, especially when I smile, and have since I was a baby.

A woman I worked with when I was 16 said 'you should stop scrubbing your eyes with a washcloth. You're damaging the skin there.'

She also told me that I needed to blend my makeup better BC I had a foundation line on my jaw - to which I replied 'Im not wearing foundation'.

    She had issues.

A bartender once told me, "that's a pretty bold lipstick for a Sunday." I was wearing clear lipgloss. Jerk!

You look like you don't feel good. Maybe you should wear some makeup to at least make it look like you feel good.

Yeah, I felt fabulous that day and my hair AND makeup were already done.

I have a juicy bum and no hips so I avoid clothes that accentuate this. I am also short waisted.

I was trying on a tighter fitting dress and one of my coworkers commented that she 'never knew I had such short legs' I said 'I don't' she then proceeded to argue with me. I had to explain to her that no those weren't my hips those were my thighs, my FEMURS. my legs continued on past that. Being a nurse you'd think she'd understand but she still tried to argue with me. smh

I used to wear my hair really short, and got haircuts every 4-5 weeks. I went in for a trim a couple weeks after I had a baby, and the stylist, who presumably knew me well by then, asked me if I had had the baby yet. I had been feeling pretty slim, but I guess I still looked pregnant. I stopped going to her.

I have dark lips as well, more of a 'wine' color, if you think of lipstick. I have had some pretty stupid or funny comments made about that. As I was playing a harmonica one night a very intoxicated guy kept saying, "They just get darker and darker. I've never seen anything like it."

I was born with my hip bones turned in. I am not sure if it happened during birth or... Because of this my feet turned in, one more so than the other. I had the options of wearing leg braces, or having a surgery that would leave me in a body cast for a year. I took ballet instead, in second grade, and trained myself to turn my feet out. It took awhile and before-during this time I was told to "stop trying to get sympathy" or "stop faking it" by several girls in my class.

    Ignorance.
When I hear terms like "hipster" I think, who told cliques they could leave high school??

I know your title says not hair, but I have to share this one!

I recently cut 2" off my hair. Not a lot, but just enough that I can't put it into a ponytail (anymore - my old stand by).

I walked in to the grocery store this morning, and a male acquaintance looked at me and said, "I am appalled by this new perm that you have!" It was awkward explaining to him that my hair grows out of my scalp naturally like this.

He's a dumb, goofy dude, but it made me feel bad :(

A little more on topic, I always get the side eye when someone asks if I'm wearing lipstick or false eyelashes and I tell them no.

I have big, muscular calves and sometimes get the "Oh, you're really skrong" type of comments from other women about them. I find something about them to backhand compliment. Good times!

    "You look miserable."

Nope. That's just what my face looks like. I refuse to walk around all day forcing myself to grin just so you feel comfortable around me. Sorry.

"You and your family all have big, crazy eyes! That's how I know you're all related!"

Er, thanks? I happen to LIKE my eyes. :p I happen to like ALL OF OUR eyes, actually!

A dental hygienist told me a few months ago... "WOW! YOU'VE GOT TEETH ALL THE WAY BACK TO YOUR EARS!"

I guess it wasn't a comment about my appearance, exactly, but it still annoyed me. Yeah, I pretty much do. Is that a problem? I guess that means job security for you, amirite?! I've got a huge mouth, so I don't know how you could expect any less when you saw me!

What about someone telling me for a second time "when are you going to relax your hair" because i now choose to let it grow natural. I have 4a hair and she can't understand (although she is black like me) why I no longer want relaxed hair. I told her "what about you, why do you always tie your hair into a ponytail even right after coming out of hair salon?".

My friend reminded me tonight of this guy who recently told me, "Hey girl, you're on your way to skinny. Keep up the good work." Erm, no, dill weed. I'm not losing any weight and don't intend to.

I love when people tell me my legs are too pale to wear shorts/skirts. Nobody is forcing you to look at my legs.

I'm not a thin girl and never have been. About 2 blocks away (maybe 1/2 mile?) there is a dive fast food place with the best shakes. Like 24 (maybe 16) oz. With 3-4 inches of shake standing above it. It is pure heaven.

My cousin wanted one and I walked with her up there. Normally we would drive (yeah, yeah), but parking was and is a beast there.

Walking home, some douche hollered out the window of his jeep. "Keep walking! Maybe it'll actually do you some good!"

Well, I might be a fat girl, but at the time I was a relatively healthy and fit fat girl...and I had in my hand a bottle of water. Not the ginormous shake my thin cousin was toting!

Another, my favorite: "Why do you walk like that?"
Me: "Walk like what? I'm walking the same way I always do..."
Them: "You swing your hips like a hooker working a line."

Uh...I don't know exactly what that is, but I can guess. And here's a clue, dumbass, when girls wear high heels, in general, their hips tend to swing. When girls wear high heels and are in a hurry, their hips tend to swing more.

I also got the comment about my legs being too pale to wear shorts, skirts, etc. I tell them I'd look a damn fool to have a face the color of porcelain and legs the color of Orange resulting from self tanner (and only if he wanted to purchase it for me because he found it sooo offensive in the first place). He shut up after that.

I have also been known to tell men the reason the tie was invented was for women to strangle them with them when they make stupid ass remarks.

When I was overweight one of my moms friends said "oh you're so pretty! Your face alone - you don't have to worry".

I'm thinking - worry about what? Being FAT!?

Mind you, this was the first time I met her - she had some nerve to assume I was concerned about my weight at all (although I was).

I'm nearly six feet tall and that isn't very normal here in calcutta india. Ever since fifteen I have had whispers and snarky comments behind my back.. And since I'm a bit on the heavier side, I have also been called a giantess (mostly by jealous boys who would never reach my height ;) ) I not only learnt to live with it, I'm actually quite proud of my body .yes people still whisper behind my back but they aren't worth worrying about. The only people who pull my leg nowadays are my closest friends.

I still have loads of people telling me that i'd make a good modelling career " if only you were a bit thinner" . Jeez.. If I were really that interested don't you think I would have tried?

I was in a meeting with like 10 other people, a male coworkerr, and our manager. We're starting the meeting and male coworker interrupts himself mid-sentence and says, "Curlyarca, you look really nice today." Everyone laughed it off, but our manager had a WTF look on her face. I didn't know what to say except thank you, and male coworker picked up where he left off.

Yes, male coworker is inappropriate on a regular basis.

I'm not really that tall (5"7) but all my friends are at least 5"5 or shorter. A couple of them always make rude comments when I wear heels. One always says I shouldn't be allowed to wear heels .

Oh and I love the backhanded compliments. A girl said "You can't even weigh more then 90 pounds." I said I weigh over 100 and she argued with me.

Another one. "No wonder your cold you have no fat." then she preceded to poke my arm to prove her point.

Also a friend's mom said "I hate pale skin." then she looked at me and said "Oh but it looks good on you."

    That's just a few.

Oh man, how could I forget this one? I have pretty severe tinea versicolor and spider/varicose veins all over my legs. So I've got giant red splotches covering a good amount of real estate on my legs, and then blue/green veins that show through said patches.

In the summer, I get SO MANY comments about it. Like:

"Woah, what is WRONG with your legs?"

"Did somebody hit you/do that to you?" (I guess in some spots it looks like bruising? I don't see it.)

"You really need to wear sunscreen on your legs... Then maybe you wouldn't get such bad sunburn."

And then I have to go on to explain that my skin always looks like that and there's not much I can do about it, and then they look slightly ashamed of themselves. Only slightly, though. I really need to come up with some better responses, so that people feel horrible about making such comments. It's so rude!

I love when people tell me my legs are too pale to wear shorts/skirts. Nobody is forcing you to look at my legs.

^^^ this. I am very pale without being actually white skinned. So people always think I am sick. I have a friend T who reminds me of Snow White: T has white skin and black hair. She's gorgeous. I am darker than her by several shades but still pretty pale. The same person who always asks if I am running a fever because I am so pale turns around and tells T how gorgeous her skin is....just glowing. It's funny.

And yes, no one has to look at my legs. I do not tan. I do not fake tan. I have no desire to change color; I am what I am, which is a pale healthy woman. Skin cancer scares the begeebies out of me. Tan? Not for me!

The funniest thing EVER was last year when I had surgery and was on prednisone and got the typical moon face swelling. I thought I looked hilarious. My face was so swollen there was not a wrinkle or line anywhere on it. I looked like a bloated, chubby and much younger me. I took my photo with no makeup on and posted it on facebook that I didn't need a facelift; I had prednisone. One of my friends was horrified; she couldn't believe I'd post that sort of photo of myself. She was certain one of my kids had hacked my facebook account and put up the photo to humiliate me. Um, I am not vain and I can and do laugh at myself. She still doesn't believe I posted the photo!

When I was 3-4 months pregnant I developed acne and a mall kiosk lady told me she could cover up my bumps so I could be pretty and attract men and such... I pretty much told her to STFU and went on my merry little way.

I was told my hair looked better straight by some coworkers. But that was only because I had worn braids for 3 months so wearing it straight was new and different and people always notice new and different.

A week after giving birth I went to the store with my baby in a stroller to buy some groceries and a lady asked if I knew what I was having...

when I was young, I was quite large. I was walking through a subway station and carrying a drink from McDonald's - and some jerk passing by me says, "you shouldn't drink that, it will only make you fatter". I told him, "you shouldn't give random advice to strangers, it will only make you look dumber".

Stupid jerk. As though I didn't know what i looked like... ;p

That is one that I have heard, numerous times, since working my butt off to get back to the size where I feel my best. I am 5'7 and 1/2, and I absolutely weigh over 100 lbs. I am a size 6, but people will argue to the death with me about that.

I have an autoimmune disease (Ankylosing spondylitis with some Lupus crossover symptoms, to be exact) and recently have had spine issues that will be requiring surgery within the next couple of months. As a result of the issues, I've been unable to exercise and gained 35 lbs this year, on top of the 50 prednisone pounds I gained a few years ago and was in the process of working off when the neck thing started.

My boss is otherwise supportive, but about once a week says she doesn't understand why I have health issues so young(I'm 40) and especially when I eat so clean - fresh produce and lean meats and healthy oils are my main diet. She's absolutely baffled, even though she intellectually understands its genetic.

Don't even get me started on the disabled parking stealers "I was just going in for a second!" or the self appointed gimp parking police. I get that they are well intentioned, but not all people with disabilities use a wheelchair. I may look fairly energetic heading into the store, but by the time I've done my shopping and am limping back out at a pace like I'm 80, I need that closer parking spot, plus the extra space next to it as getting into the car is hard when you don't bend well. Also, those tropes spaces between the disabled spots are NOT extra parking spots!!!!
