Sulphates, Silicones and Slip?

Hi there :)

I recently started CG Method. As of now, I have co-washed twice but as I was reading up on it yesterday, I saw you had to do a sulphate wash before you started.

Now I had been using no-sulphate shampoo which had silicones and a silicone riddled conditioner. I looked at some other shampoo with sulphates and they all had silicones. So I'm wondering how I'm supposed to do a sulphate wash without silicones?

Also, I'm using Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner and I'm finding it really hard to get through my hair, it feels like I'm trying to condition dry hair. Is it because I've just started or is it the conditioner?

The conditioner may not be able to penetrate your hair if it's coated with a layer of silicone. That's why we do a sulfate wash first - to get rid of the silicone that's already there. Suave has a daily clarifying shampoo that doesn't have silicone. It's also cheap and easy to find.

Is there another option because Suave doesn't sell in Britain?

I couldn't think of any off the top of my head, but did a quick Google search. Here's a thread on britishcurlies.com with several cone free shampoo options:

    Thanks :)

Also, I found a company that ships suave to britain but the ingredients contained silicones namely Dimethicone Copolyol, Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone.

The Suave Naturals line of shampoo and conditioner is completely free of silicones. It's the one you want. The other varieties all have silicones. Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone are both preservatives and CG friendly. Silicones end in -cone, -conol, or-xane and are not CG friendly unless they start with PEG or PPG. PEG or PPG silicones are water soluble and cowashing will remove them from your hair.

What about Dimethicone or Dimethicone Copolyol?

Thanks for the information :) I didn't know that.

Oh sorry, checked the website and it has PEG. The seller on amazon must of listed the wrong ingredients. It's just the reviews were saying they had changed the formula. Thank you so much! I had been desperate to use suave.

This article is a handy reference to bookmark as far as which silicones are water soluble. It doesn't list every silicone, but it's a decent place to start:
    What's the Scoop on Silicones?

Dimethicone Copolyol is an exception to the PEG /PPG means water soluble rule. It is water soluble and will cowash out. Dimethicone (without any prefix or suffix) is not water soluble and notorious for building up quickly.

Thanks just a question though, is there two types of daily clarifying from suave. I've seen one in a milky white bottle and one in a clear bottle.

The one I use is in a clear bottle.

Just wondering, my mum's dug out this clarifying shampoo, she uses for her pre-keratin treatment. It has Polyquatimium 7 in it. Is this a good silicone?
  • Geek_ChicGeek_Chic Posts: 1,255Registered Users
Polyquaternium-7 isn't a silicone, so it's CG friendly. However, some people do have issues with polyquats building up on their hair. Some polyquats, such as Polyquaternium-44 have a minimal tendency to build up, while others cause more issues. Polyquaternium-7 lies somewhere in the middle. As a one time clarifying last sulfate wash, I don't think I would worry about it.

If you'd like more information, there are a few CurlChemist articles you can check out. This is fairly basic:
    Polyquats as Conditioning Agents

    This is more technical:
    All About Another Hard-to-Pronounce Compound

And this one specifically addresses using polyquats on a low poo (sulfate free shampoo) or cowashing regimen:
