I can't stop my hair from getting really tangled at night

I tie it up really high (which I like because it leaves it just right for styling in the morning), but it still get's tangled. I tried braiding and nothing.

My hair is a little dry even though I tried several moisturizes with it, cremes, oils, etc. I cowashed for months and I think that doesn't work for me. My hair started falling out badly. Huge clumps would come out when I combed in the shower. I stopped for a few weeks now and I'm getting normal shedding again and I feel the thickness coming back but I'm still very upset with the dryness and the tangling because it forces me to do whole combing or dry untangling with my fingers and my brittle hair is very upset with that.

Please help? Oh BTW, I have 3c/3b hair.

Have you tried Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in? I hear it's one of the best detanglers. You can apply it to your hair before you go to sleep. Maybe it will help.

I've never seen it at the store. I tend to try to not buy things online that I need to try out and maybe return. Should I try putting a detangler in before bed?

How many braids did you try? Just one or several? Also did you try sleeping with a satin bonnet on?

Do you find that your hair is dry, stiff, and frizzy? If so you could have too much protein in your hair's products, and this could be the culprit of the brittleness and dryness. Try clarifying and doing a moisturizing deep treatment with heat. Usually helps.

Lastly I really don't recommend dry detangling! ouch! Not to sound rude, but why do you feel that is necessary? Wetting the hair (with conditioner too) is always best.

I agree with the recommendation for Knot Today (which I still think is the most amazing potion ever created), and recently I'm thrilled with Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls, also sold at Target. The Pillow Soft says it's a styling lotion, but I use it as a leave-in at night after my wash, cover with my silk sleep scarf, and in the morning my hair has hardly any tangles. The Pillow Soft comes in a huge tube, and you only need a couple of tablespoons at a time, so it's long-lasting. (I go through Knot Today in a week sometimes).

Yeah, you could make your hair a little wet with a water spray perhaps, apply Kinky Curly Knot Today, then go to sleep. See if this works :)

I sometimes get this same issue - I sleep with my hair in a pineapple but will still sometimes get tangles underneath at the nape of my neck. I think this is because I do not have a satin/silk sleep bonnet or pillow case, and the hairs that rub on my pillow while I sleep are tangling up. Since I haven't gotten around to getting a sleep bonnet or better pillow case, I have found that putting some LI on my hair before bed helps. I also agree with waterlily that some of the issue could be the amount of protein in your routine. I also would not detangle dry hair - that will just cause breakage. If you need to detangle a specific section, I would wet it down and add some conditioner (like KCKT, or my favorite is As I Am LI) then detangle.
    2c/3a, botticelli/wavy/'swavy (huh?)
fine, dense, normal porosity/elasticity, dry climate
My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

Aethera, what are your hair properties?
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!! :read2:
    My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
    My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
    RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
    LI: KCKT or CJSL
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.

I do comb my hair with water and conditioner. I have to dry untangle in the morning when I undo my hair because it has gotten all tangled in the night. I don't mean completely combing it out.

I'll look into that too. I bought the Knot Today, but I didn't use it last night. I combed it through my hair and I honestly fell in love with it. I don't think I've ever seen my hair semi-dry and not tangled. I put my other products in, pineappled it for a bit for it to dry and settle and it looks amazing. So I'm really happy with that suggestion so far.

Lol, yeah I don't think I'd actually have hair if I did that. XD

It is working amazingly, but as someone else suggested it is going by pretty fast. I think I'm just going to make the effort to comb my hair out more in the shower with just water. I used to try to comb it at little as possibly to stop it from shedding too much, but doing that seems to be working oppositely. It gets tangled and I'm forced to break it to untangle it. I'm not interested in dreadlocks so I'm just going to have to spend 1 mins a night when I shower combing it out gentle with water.

I really appreciate all the advice everyone!
