Limp frizz.... Help!

gemma.baldwigemma.baldwi Posts: 1Registered Users
So i am in week 3 of cg method. Before this is washed with sulphate shampoos, used silicones and regularly straightened! This is a BIG change for me!

Last week i managed a decent look but my hair seems to be gradually losing curl and looking a little sad. :(

I have been co- washing with tres emme naturals twice a week, using this as a leave in too then using tigi curls ock amolifier for definition. I plop with a cotton sheet for about half an hour and then air dry without touching (hardest thing ever!!) and basically hope for the best! I find i still have a frizzy hue around my hair but not nearly as bad as used to be, but the top layer is not holding much curl and just looks frizxy and limp. The underneath had lovely barrel-like curls which became shinier than usual but have now gone straight?

I dont know where i'm going wrong but i'm feeling a bit ugly right now!! I'm in the UK o many of the products discussed aren't available here. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!! I am very confused!!!

I think i'm 2c, medium-coarse, high density, high porosity. I think.... ;)

I also just started the CG method about 2 weeks ago. I had already been using a sulfate free shampoo, Earthsafe, for a year or so, but hadn't used conditioner or styling products for years. I was addicted to my straightener. Now I'm using the Tresseme Naturals conditioner for co-washing and leave in and I make flax seed gel for styling. The first week was amazing! I'd get 3 days of bouncy curls with only light water spraying and additional gel in the mornings on day 2 and 3, but now my hair is limp and frizzes at the crown. My hair is still curly, but the curls have become long, narrow and limp and some strands have curl at the top and straight at the bottom. :sad1: I don't think we should give up, but I hope someone out there has some advice!

My hair is 2c waves, normal-high porosity, medium density, and course!

sounds like you ladies need protein! you have mentioned that your hair is coarse, but i wonder if it really is coarse. have you had your properties tested? anyways what you are describing sounds like overconditioning. maybe start with a little protein, and if you tolerate it, then gradually increase the dosage.

Thanks for this thread ladies! I am interested in the answers here as well because I am dealing with limp frizz at the moment. I always assume that this means I need more moisture, so I am really pondering elizard's suggestion that it could be OVERCONDITIONING? I guess I always thought that would just look greasy, but it sounds like you are saying that sometimes it just looks frizzy. So confusing! So is the answer to add protein or to cut back on conditioners? I also have medium coarse hair so I am reluctant to try protein (hair analysis told me to stay away). I seem to cycle through these limp stages - a new product or technique works for a while and then hair just falls flat. I am also wondering whether this might be because I am not rotating products. TIA for any more helpful advice.

Protein saved my hair when I started CG! Like you ladies, I assumed that since I had been killing my curls by using harsh sulfates every day plus blow drying and straightening, I need oodles of moisture to start trying to repair the damage I had done to my hair. However less than a week into CG I lost all definition to my curls and my hair was so tangled I couldn't even run a brush through it without snagging and pain. I picked up a few kinds of protein conditioners and immediately after the first protein treatment my hair felt significantly better. By the end of the following week my hair was back to normal again. I've since discovered that my hair LOVES protein. I use a protein conditioner once a week, a protein treatment once a week and a protein based leave in without any problems. If you're losing your waves and aren't using cones it might be worth a shot! It could also be that your hair doesn't like co-washing only. I low-poo once a week in the summer and twice a week after I switch to my heavier cold-weather styling products.
Southern WI curly ~ mostly 2b/c with 2a/b underlayer and a few 3a curls on top
Low porosity, fine hair but LOTS of it!
Loves protein. Dislikes butters and heavy oils.
Working toward natural products and streamlining!!
Current Loves: JCCC, Desert Essence Coconut Conditioner, AG Recoil, CK Coil Jam

So I tried a protein mask that I made, egg yokes, yogurt, and olive oil. My hair felt soft and is fuller, but not very curly. Normally my hair is 2c (I think) but now it seems more 2a. My waves are bigger and fuller, but less curly. Should I stick to proteins or is something else going on?
Thanks everyone for your help !

Some people's hair likes certain proteins better than others. Keratin is one that seems to be widely tolerated. So you may need to do some experimentation, but it sounds like it wasn't a complete bust. I have never tried a home-made protein treatment, but someone else may be able to tell you... some treatments need a deep conditioning afterwards, especially if your hair is on the coarser side. I never do that because I overcondition so easily. I was using Repair Me a lot, which I do like, but recently I've had great success with Colorful Neutral Protein Filler mixed with water. I don't even DT after that. If your hair starts to feel strawlike and extra frizzy, that means you overdid the protein.

elizard - you and i seem to have very similar hair properties, though my hair definitely doesn't look like your cat. so i am interested to hear that your hair likes protein - i did the hair analysis and they told me to stay away from protein. i have always tried it with a DT with less than fabulous results, so maybe i should try alone. it's so hard to tell somehow whether my frizz is due to dryness or overconditioning . . . how do you even tell? thanks!

Yep my hair analysis said the same thing. Luckily I had already been using them so I knew protein worked for me. That's why I don't trust the hair analysis that much.

So it might also have something to do with personal preference of how you like your hair to look and feel. I like my hair to feel strong and dry. I cannot stand the soft coated feeling some products give my hair.

You will definitely be able to tell if your hair is overconditioned. It feels soft bordering on greasy and won't hold curl well.

I just went through a horrible time about a couple months ago. I thought my hair was course and was using oil to seal it... Oh my...it was a DISASTER!!!!! I had to use a cleansing shampoo for a couple weeks...and I realized that I actually have fine/med hair... It was also over conditioned...which made it limp, semi greasy, and VERY frizzy!!! So some times you just have to figure out what your hair likes by trial and error...I am loving my hair these days...but it was a frustrating road...Oh and just a tid bit of info...I figured out my hair liked protein by how it felt when it was wet...my hair seemed to plump up and feel soft and seaweedy...which is what you want...if I don't get this with the protein conditioner then my hair needs more moisture...just try to listen to your hair...it's shouldn't be limp and crazy frizzy...
