Scalp Issues... (Acne?)

Hi everyone!

I've been having this issue for some time and it's really starting to get on my nerves. Sometimes my scalp breaks out into these very painful, red bumps. It's sort of like acne, and it's really painful. My scalp gets itchy every once in a while too. I know it has something to do with my shampoo, but I also think that it's hormonal but... I'm not sure. I have to switch up my shampoos and conditioners a lot, and I only use organic products. I'm allergic to sulfur, so sulphates aren't my problem because I never use any products that has that in it. For some reason, Renpure products clear up my scalp as soon as I wash with them but my hair needs a change sometimes... It's really irritating for me to deal with, I'm not even sure what it is and what to do about it.

Has anyone else experienced this? What have you done for it, and what works for you?

Thanks guys!

I have this sometimes, but it hasn't happened since I've used better products. It would happen to me with styling products actually. Specifically hair spray. Gel didn't do it unless I used too much, but then hairspray did it everytime. Something in it your head doesn't like. If you can gradually circulate out one product at a time you may be able to figure it out. Luckily, I rarely needed hairspray so it was easy to notice those were the few times it happened.

Mine does this, it's chronically dry and when I use sulfate shampoo too much I get a few bumps (that pop, ewww!)

What has saved me is strictly no sulfates and using a tea tree option once in a while. I use Nature's Organic (god now I feel like that's wrong and I am not near my own bathroom). It's sulfate free and really nice.

I also recently bought Kiss My Face Every day (or every time) daily shampoo for my BF and have tried it. No sulfates (I think) and the coco betaine is way down the list after a lot of natural extracts and aloe and such. I really like it and this may become my winter wash.

sus811 - I too found that it happened with some of the products that I was using to style my hair... It's weird, like with some I would break out terribly and be in so much pain from the bumps and then the second I stopped using them it took like 2 days to clear up. I just feel like no product is safe for my scalp, like I never know what to use because I never know what ingredient it is that makes me go nuts. Sometimes it happens with sulfate-free shampoos, that's why I'm like :confused2:

KookyCurl - Bumps that pop!!! Yes! That's what I get too. It hurts SO badly. Is it Avalon Organics that you're talking about? I bought their scalp normalizing shampoo & conditioner and that has helped some. It just gets so frustrating when you want to switch up your shampoos. I found that Renpure originals argan oil shampoo & conditioner keeps my scalp in shape as well... I have to be more strict and really read the backs of the shampoos and make sure that they're alright. Sometimes I'm just greeted with a surprise of the bumps on my scalp at random.

I think that I'm going to go to the dermatologist... I talked to my mom and she said that she would come with me. I'm a scaredy cat twenty year old-plus I don't have the best track record with dermatologists... I don't exactly LIKE the one I went to before because of all the medication she put me on for acne. I also am afraid of what she'll actually give me for the bumps & what they will do to my hair... My hair hasn't looked this good in the longest time and I DON'T want to ruin it!

its best for you to go to a dermatologist.
I ignored my scalp issues for a while till it got really bad! i had scalp eczema and that came from no where because ive never had it before. I've now mostly got it under control. But it used to be itchy and sometimes i got bumps randomly on my scalp!

    Good Luck!

I have read that neem oil is quite good for acne, but I cannot say what it would do to hair in general...however, it is a natural product. You may want to look it up. I believe honey is good for acne as well. You can find neem oil at health food stores...
Finer, mixed with coarser strands, low-porosity, wavy curly whirly hair...3A, 2C hair. Medium thickness, medium elasticity.
S-shaped hair with corkscrew ends. My hair is even more confused than me ;p
My hair officially hates protein ;) Once a month is enough!
Currently a fan of TiGi products, (rock on, TiGi Curlesque styling creme!) but that will soon change - I am a self-avowed product junkie! Yay! :D
BIG fan of supersoaker method - thanks Rudeechick!

confusedcurly89 - I definitely am going to go to the dermatologist. I've had a history of having eczema, so that may be what this is... It's just annoying not being able to use normal shampoos sometimes.

Knotty_Maddy - Neem oil, okay! Thank you. I've actually used honey on my scalp before and it tamed it a lot. Which was really nice! Thank you so much!
